In January 1945, just months before Germany's unconditional surrender in World War Two, George S. Patton famously declared the M1 Garand as "the greatest battle implement ever devised." The accolade is well-deserved. This semi-automatic rifle served American troops in the fields of Northern France, the coasts of Okinawa, the dry heat of Africa, and the oppressive humidity of the Philippines. And in more ways than one, the M1 Garand helped win the bloodiest war in human history. THE BEGINNING OF A WORLD WAR WEAPON Fittingly, the gun that would help to liberate France was created by a French-Canadian—John Cantius Garand....

Dolly Kyle Browning will be on Hannity today sometime between Noon-3pm Pacific to discuss her new book -- THE OTHER WOMAN. Yes, her relationship with Bill was consensual but, like all the others, she had to worry about the consequences of not remaining silent. Maybe she will join us here. @DollyKyleWriter

I’m jealous. Hickok45 has a circa 1919 full-auto Browning BAR that has been upgraded to World War II standards. It remains one of my two favorite machine guns of all time (the other is the late 1960s-early 1970s Smith & Wesson M76 9mm submachine gun).

From the 1940s until recent times, if a soldier carried a nine-millimeter pistol into battle as part of his weaponry there was a good chance it was a Browning Hi-Power. The Hi-Power was a part of nearly every world conflict of the 20th century. On both sides. Saddam Hussein carried one—and liked to fire it into the air to rile up his supporters. Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi owned a customized, gold-plated Hi-Power with an image of his face etched in the grips.

"Browning was not a degreed engineer, but he is, to date, the greatest firearms designer who has ever lived. Consider this: had Browning done nothing but the 1911, he’d have a place in the top rank of gun designers, ever. But that’s not all he did, by any means. If he had done nothing but the M1917 and M1919 machine guns, he’d have a place in the top ranks of designers. If he’d done nothing but the M2HB, a gun which will still be in widespread infantry service a century after its introduction, and its .50 siblings, he’d be hailed...

ACKSON – Veteran Democratic state Sen. Nicky Browning of Pontotoc switched political parties Tuesday, giving Republicans a 32-20 super majority in the 52-member Senate. Browning, 61, represents Senate District 3, which covers Pontotoc, Union and parts of Calhoun counties, and is chairman of the Senate County Affairs Committee. He has been in the Senate since 1996. “Conservatives in Mississippi are working to build a bright future for our state, and it is wonderful to have Senator Browning join our effort,” Gov. Phil Bryant said in a statement. “I am very pleased to welcome him to the Republican Party.” Lt. Gov....
  • Double-Barrel 1911 Lands ATF Approval, Importation To Begin Next Year

Double-barrel 1911 lands ATF approval, importation to begin next year The ATF has given Arsenal the green light to import their double-barreled, double-everything 1911. Arsenal turned a lot of heads a few months back when they announced their truly unique handgun, the AF2011-A1, but many assumed that the gun would never wind up for sale in the U.S., because it fires two cartridges with one pull of the trigger, making it a machine gun according to federal law. Arsenal maintained that their double trigger design, and matching pair of sears and hammers, would not raise the hackles of the gatekeepers...

  • Why such muted celebrations for Robert Browning's bicentenary?

It's Robert Browning's misfortune to be more often remembered as material for jokes or as the victim of humiliation than as the author of Men and Women, Dramatis Personae and The Ring and the Book. There's Oscar Wilde's gag that "Meredith was a prose Browning, and so was Browning". Or Jane Carlyle's uncertainty, after having read the lengthy, obscure narrative poem Sordello, as to whether Sordello was "a man, a city, or a book". Has any other leading author been so regular an object of mockery? Even Henry James could not resist it, reporting after a reading by the poet...

On a particular fall day in 1889, the members of the Ogden Rifle Club of Ogden, Utah, were out in force. The men were target shooting, but doubtless found the brilliant fall colors of aspens and oaks on the high peaks of the Wasatch Range a distraction. Enticing too were the flocks of migratory waterfowl wheeling overhead and grouse calling in the brush. But all rifles that day were trained on paper targets, although one of the competitors, an unusually tall man with stern but handsome features, was having trouble concentrating on hitting the mark. As his good friend Will...

July 31, 2007: Two years ago, field testing of the XM-312, the replacement for the eighty year old, .50 caliber (12.7mm) M-2 ("Ma Deuce") machine-gun, began, in the United States and overseas. Then, nothing. That's because the test results were not encouraging, the biggest shortcoming being the low rate of fire (about 260 rounds per minute). This is about half the rate of the M2, and was believed adequate for the 25mm smart shells the XM312 was originally designed for (as the XM307). But for 12.7mm bullets, it didn't impress the troops. There were some reliability problems, which could be...

The fight to maintain our rights is a never-ending struggle. We were reminded of this recently when we received a postcard from an organization called the Freedom States Alliance. This is an outfit that uses scare tactics about terrorism to push its anti-gun agenda. Pictured on the front of the card was a civilian airliner with an illustration of a rifle scope's crosshairs centered to the nose of the plane and the Web site listed across the top. On the back was a listing of why .50 caliber rifles should be banned. The reasons might seem reasonable, but a...

The links between Nick Berg and Zacarias Moussaoui, once described as the 20th hijacker of 9/11, opened now room for new speculations, if there are deeper ties between the OKC Bombing'95 and 9/11, than thought before. Apparently Berg knew also Moussaoui's roomates. One of them was Mujahid Menepta, who is connected to both 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 1995 OKC bombing. But Menepta wasn't arrested in Summer 2001, when Moussaoui got caught. The Daily Cal's popular "Sex on Tuesday" column welcomed University of California, Berkeley students back to school with frank talk about morning-after manners and the etiquette of the "half-night stand" - sneaking out before the sun and the bed owner rise. My fellow freepers. I have a few questions about the purchase of a shotgun. I have just discovered how much fun shooting clay pigeons at the local club. I have only been a couple a times and rent a Browning over/under from the club. But that can get expensive and its a different gun each time. The person that I took some lessons from recommended a Baretta over/under. My questions are semi-auto vs. over/under, brand, barrel length, 12 vs 20 gauge? I will be using the shotgun for clays mostly. Thanks in advance.

Boycott Blocks Construction of Abortuary in TexasSteve Brown, CNSNews.comMonday, Nov. 10, 2003 The willingness of some Texas pro-lifers to mix their personal views with their professional lives has blocked the construction of a $6.2 million abortion clinic in Austin. San Antonio-based Browning Construction, one of the largest such companies in the state, pulled out of the contract recently after a key contractors balked at the project because it was going to house a Planned Parenthood clinic where abortions were going to be performed.
