The Cleveland Browns' 34-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday carried a lot of lessons for this young team, some positive and others maddeningly predictable. The Browns' two key rookies, QB Brandon Weeden and RB Trent Richardson, showed marked improvement in their second outing, giving a much-needed boost to an offense that floundered last week against Philadelphia. But the absence of CB Joe Haden on the defense allowed the Bengals to pick on the Browns' young secondary. Combined with mental lapses, poor tackling and heavy penalties, the Browns just couldn't keep up. Here are five lessons from the Week 2...

Today the Cleveland Plain Dealer announced the resignation of Connie Schultz, wife of Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH). Schultz had come under fire recently for attending a Tea Party rally near Cleveland at which her husband’s likely opponent in 2012, Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel, was a featured speaker. Schultz was spotted videotaping Mandel’s speech, but she conspicuously neglected to mention in her article that Mandel was even at the rally. (Read the details in my previous diary). Once news about Schultz’s covert-op became known, the Pulitzer prize winning journalist and 18-year veteran of the Plain Dealer issued a breathless apology, claiming...

Cleveland Browns fan sues over NFL lockoutBy THOMAS J. SHEERAN, Associated Press 6 hours, 29 minutes ago CLEVELAND (AP)—A Cleveland Browns fan sued the National Football league and its teams over the player lockout, claiming it violated his contract to buy tickets through his personal seat license. Ken Lanci, a self-made millionaire who ran unsuccessfully last year for the top county government job in Cleveland, filed the lawsuit Thursday in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. “It’s a fight between billionaires and millionaires,” Lanci said Friday in a phone interview. “There isn’t any sympathy for multi-millionaires. It’s just not going to...

On her Bravo TV show Tuesday night, left-wing comedian Kathy Griffin referred to Sen. Scott Brown's two daughters as "prostitutes," and a CNN reporter apparently thought it hysterical. [Audio available here.] Griffin, who was readying herself for a trip to Washington, DC to rally and drum up support for a repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," brought CNN reporters (husband and wife) Dana Bash and John King onto the show to "coach" her for handling Washington. Bash is a congressional correspondent for CNN, while King anchors the news hour "John King, USA." When the couple showed Griffin a picture of...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - When he takes to the campaign trail, Jerry Brown is fond of reminding voters that he shunned the governor's mansion in Sacramento in favor of a rented apartment during his first tour in the executive office and lived in a downtown loft in Oakland while he was mayor of the crime-ridden city. The stories are part of a campaign narrative of frugality. The Democratic nominee wants voters to remember that when they consider whether to send him back to the governor's office as California faces a $19 billion budget deficit, an unemployment rate above 12 percent...

NAIROBI, Kenya — Two explosions ripped through a park in Kenya's capital during a packed political rally late Sunday, killing five people and wounding 75, officials said. The rally was held to protest a draft constitution the country will vote on in August. The country's president and prime minister support it, but several prominent political leaders do not. Prime Minister Raila Odinga said that officials don't know the cause of the blasts but that they wounded 75 people. Dr. Charles Kabetu of Kenya's national hospital said five people had died. "I want to say clearly that the government will do...

He was arrested at 12:15 p.m. without incident and was booked for carrying a concealed weapon, a third-degree felony. No charges have been filed at this time, police said. Under Ohio law, a third-degree felony carries a penalty of probation...

Brady Quinn will get a chance to start over in Denver. Whether he’ll get to start is up in the air. The Broncos acquired the former first-round draft pick from the Cleveland Browns for fullback Peyton Hillis, a 2011 sixth-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2012. The teams announced the trade Sunday and said the deal is pending physicals. Ostensibly, Quinn will compete with Kyle Orton(notes) for the Broncos’ starting job, although coach Josh McDaniels was unavailable Sunday to comment on the trade, according to a team spokesman. Quinn’s departure comes one day after the Browns agreed to...

Josh Cribbs of the Cleveland Browns has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns against Kansas City, breaking and then extending the NFL career record. After his 100-yard return in the first quarter broke the league record, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound veteran sped 103 yards in the second quarter. His first return of the day was the seventh of his five-year career and broke the record he had shared with five others. On that one, he broke free from at least six players who got their hand on him. In his second, he took the ball 3 yards deep in the end zone,...

Former Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius has filed a civil suit in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court against the Browns, the Cleveland Clinic, former team physician Dr. Anthony Miniaci and current team physician Dr. Richard Figler, for negligence and fraud that he alleges led to a staph infection that might have ended his NFL career. The suit claims that the Browns and their team physicians failed to warn Jurevicius that sterile techniques were not at all times used at the Browns training facility in Berea; that therapy devices passed among multiple individuals, including Browns players, were not properly maintained and/or cleaned,...

The Cleveland Browns fired coach Romeo Crennel and General Manager Phil Savage after ending the season with a six-game losing streak. The Browns slumped to 4-12 this season -- their fifth losing season in six years -- after going 10-6 in 2007. They didn’t score an offensive touchdown during their season-ending skid and finished in last place in the American Football Conference’s North Division. Crennel had a 24-40 record in four National Football League seasons since joining the Browns, who haven’t won a playoff game since 1994, when Bill Belichick was coach. Savage took over as the Browns’ GM and...

The Browns will wear brown pants for the first time in team history during Monday night's nationally-televised preseason game against the New York Giants at Giants Stadium. The pants are the same color of "darker" brown that's on the plain socks the Browns have worn in recent seasons. They contain no stripes or markings. They will be wearing those socks again on Monday, with their traditional white jerseys and orange helmets, and also the black shoes they started wearing again in 2006. The team had the brown pants created as an option for their away uniform when they integrated the...

He seeks a court order preventing either company from continuing to use his likeness in the franchise as well as damages stemming from trademark violation.
