This Bud’s for you - take it or leave it Howie Carr Here’s a modest proposal: Tomorrow night at the White House, everybody drinks the same brand of beer. How America 2009 is that? It’s not enough to have the host provide the adult beverages. No, now all the guests have to get on the record with which beer they prefer, and please, hold the Milwaukee’s Best. Barack’s a Bud man. You know, the No. 1 domestic brand, although he probably hasn’t gotten the memo that August Busch IV and Ed McMahon aren’t walking through that door. Some Belgians now...

It's hard to figure out Clarence "Bud" Ollom's highest honor. There's the time he was knighted by the French consul general at Minnesota's Capitol Rotunda. The 2006 ceremony marked the first time a Minnesotan was admitted into France's highest military order: the Legion of Honor. Then there's the story of how Ollom, one of Minnesota's most highly decorated World War II paratroopers, singly charged a German machine gun nest five days after D-Day. By the time the adrenaline faded, he'd shot at least three German soldiers with his M-1 rifle and the rest had fled into the French countryside. Three...

Police in Germany hunted a sinister phantom killer for two years after finding the same DNA at 39 different crime scenes - only to discover that the source was a woman who made the cotton buds used to collect the sample! The case was one of the most puzzling in recent times. Hundreds of detectives in six specialist committees were set to work hunting the ominous female serial killer. But there was no progress, despite investigators finding her DNA at so many crime scenes. The police were stumped. They eventually offered a 300,000 euro reward to find the killer. It's...

Anheuser-Busch's board has accepted a $52 million takeover offer from Belgian brewer InBev, creating the world's largest brewer, the two companies announced late Sunday evening. The company will be called Anheuser-Busch InBev, and InBev CEO Carlos Brito will be the CEO of the combined company. "Together, Anheuser-Busch and InBev will accomplish much more than each can on its own," Brito told reporters in a conference call Monday morning. The announcement ends a month of hostility between the brewer of Budweiser and InBev, which traded lawsuits when InBev tried to oust A-B's board. "We always tried to engage with the Anheuser-Busch...

Anheuser-Busch's (BUD) stock closed up over $5 at $66.50 on Friday and is trading at $67.00 after-hours. This price suggests the market is nearly certain that InBev will buy BUD at the rumored $70/share, and it may even incorporate the expectation of an additional price increase: given the political scrutiny this deal will receive, a 5% gap between the trading price and deal price is small. In other news, InBev's potential purchase of BUD is reverberating through St. Louis and the country...and folks aren't happy about it: Jordan Moore took the news that his beloved Budweiser could soon fall into...

As the summer beer-drinking season gets ready to kick into gear, reports are swirling that Anheuser-Busch could be the target of a buyout attempt by Belgian-based (but Brazilian-run) InBev in a deal that could put the sole remaining big-cap American brewer into foreign hands. Stagnant domestic growth has kept shares of Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc, the largest U.S. brewer by volume -- and No. 3 globally, behind conglomerates SABMiller and InBev -- in the doldrums for several years. Content with a dominant stateside market share of nearly 50%, the St. Louis-based company was slow to innovate, catching on late to a...

Food and drink: two things we just can't live without. When tough economic times arrive, these two items stay in the budget while others disappear. It's a matter of priorities for most, and consumer staples almost always come out at the top of the list. In recent months, there has been increasing focus on the possibility of an impending food shortage. This would force prices upward as supply diminishes and demand continues unabated. In similar fashion to rising oil prices, most will grin and bear it. Gas retailers have been very quick to pass on any increases in costs and...

SARASOTA— The Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary in Sarasota is getting ready to release one buzzed bird back out into the wild. Vets at the sanctuary have been caring for a screech owl that was found acting a little odd. A couple purchased a Christmas tree and had it in the house for five days before decorating it. That's when the couple discovered a tiny screech owl in the tree. The couple called the sanctuary's rescue squad. But the story wasn't very interesting until Melissa Dolinsky began assessing the owl's health. "I kept smelling him and smelling him going, 'What is...

MILWAUKEE - The latest fight in the U.S. beer battle is a matter of taste. Miller Brewing Co. says rival Anheuser-Busch has altered Bud Light in the past year to make it more bitter and bubbly, rolling out the claim about Bud Light in national television ads that began airing Friday. The company said data it has collected show Bud Light's bitterness and carbonation rose from last year. Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. called Miller's claims "another marketing ploy" and complained to cable networks that the statements are false. Now, 10 of 32 cable networks contracted to run the commercials have put...

Southern Baptists dispute media reports & blogger claims as 'absolute falsehood' that disaster relief teams withheld waterOfficials weigh in Contrary to media and blogger reports, disaster relief officials say cans of water from Anheuser-Busch did not cause volunteers to withhold water from Hurricane Wilma victims at a Florida feeding site. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--No thirsty person went without water, and no water went to waste, Tim Bridges, pastor of First Baptist Church in Clewiston, Fla., said in response to media reports that claimed differently when a shipment of water distributed by Anheuser-Busch caused confusion Oct. 28. The inaccurate information also is...

It is guaranteed to raise a cheer among those who enjoy a tipple: moderate drinkers are better hinkers than teetotallers or those who overindulge, says a report in the Guardian. Research by the Australian National University in Canberra suggests drinking in moderation boost your brainpower. But none at all, or too much, can make you a dullard. A study of 7,000 people in their early 20s, 40s and 60s found that those who drank within safe limits had better verbal skills, memory and speed of thinking than those at the extremes of the drinking spectrum. The safe consumption level was...

Bud Light Accused of Trivializing Alcoholism in New Ad Watchdog Groups Say Beer Ad Depicts Lying About Drinking WASHINGTON—-A new ad for Bud Light beer depicts men joking about lies they've told to cover up their daytime drinking, and two watchdog groups say the Federal Trade Commission should crack down and ask Anheuser-Busch to pull the ad. In a letter to FTC enforcement official Janet Evans, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) say the ad irresponsibly makes light of alcoholic behavior. The ad in question features a...

(Talon News) -- Anheuser-Busch, the brewer of Budweiser beer, is sponsoring a taped telephone ad urging voters to "vote NO on recall, YES on Bustamante." The speaker on the recording identifies himself as former Vice President Al Gore. First reported by Mickey Kaus on Slate.com, the message begins with the former vice president urging voters to vote no on the recall. "Gray Davis has been a solid progressive governor and deserves to finish out his term," Gore says in the telephone message. "We simply cannot let the right wing Republicans roll back the progress California has been making under Governor...

This Bud's for Cruz: I got a taped call from Al Gore last night. There was something strange about it. Gray Davis has been a solid progressive governor and deserves to finish out his term. We simply cannot let the right wing Republicans roll back the progress California has been making under Governor Davis. It is very important that you vote no on the recall. Also, as insurance against a strong pro-recall turnout, and to keep a...

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., the top corporate player in Missouri politics, is no longer backing Gov. Bob Holden - in large part because of their differences over concealed weapons. Republican and Democratic sources say the brewery's decision not to support the governor's re-election next year is highly unusual in light of its long-standing reputation as a donor which gives generously to both parties and their candidates, regardless of their views. Before Holden vetoed the bill last summer, sources say, a brewery lobbyist showed up at the governor's office to tell him that such action would end the long-standing support he'd enjoyed...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Budd Co., one of Philadelphia's major employers for much of the 20th century, announced Friday that it is closing its last auto-parts plant in the city. About 600 people work at the plant in Philadelphia's Hunting Park neighborhood that makes metal stampings and assemblies such as roofs, doors, fenders, tailgates, lift gates and body side panels. Many of the workers are longtime employees who are eligible for retirement, the company said. The company said it has excess manufacturing capacity at its Detroit and Philadelphia plants and plans...

Cannabis poses a greater threat to health than tobacco, lung experts have warned. The warning comes on the day that Home Secretary David Blunkett is due to make a Commons statement about the future of government drug policy. Many young people are simply not aware that smoking cannabis may put them at increased risk of respiratory cancers and infections . Dame Helena Shovelton: The Home Affairs Select Committee has recommended that cannabis is downgraded from a class B drug to class C. This would mean that possession would lead to a caution, rather than arrest. The British Lung Foundation is...
