WASHINGTON (AP) - Warren Zimmerman, the last U.S. ambassador to Yugoslavia, died Tuesday of pancreatic cancer. He was 69. Zimmerman, a career Foreign Service officer, was named ambassador to Yugoslavia in 1989 by the first President Bush. At the time, the former communist country was breaking up into warring factions, and Zimmerman led the administration's efforts to keep the state together. Bush recalled Zimmerman in 1992 to protest the outbreak of civil war. The war lasted until 1995 and pitted the country's Muslims, Orthodox Christian Serbs and Catholic Croats against each other. The war killed 260,000 and forced 1.8 million...

Ask George H. W. Bush, an 82-year-old Republican ex-president receiving a joint award with Democrat Bill Clinton, what he thinks of the heated political season, and you might expect an appeal for less partisan rancor. Wrong. In accepting the Liberty Medal with Clinton last night for their role in tsunami and Katrina relief efforts, Bush instead offered a spirited "defense of the proper role of partisanship in our politics." "No doubt, this has been a rough political year," Bush said, "but you'll have a hard time convincing me that politics is tougher and uglier in 2006 than it was in...

Former US president George Bush said in Kuwait that he would like to see ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein "shut up" during his trial and stop acting like he is the president of Iraq. "Well, frankly, I'd like to see Saddam Hussein shut up when he sits in that dock there," in reference to Saddam's combative posture during his trial, Bush said after delivering a keynote address at an economic conference. His remarks were received with a loud applause from the Kuwaiti audience who still remember when Saddam ordered his troops to invade and occupy the emirate in 1990 before...

George Bush Senior SHOULD have got rid of Saddam Hussein in 1991. Its 13 years too late now and hundreds of thousands of people have died for his stupidity. When Bush Sr. pulled out of Iraq it was for the same reason America pulled out of Vietnam. There would have been no argument about whether Saddam had "weapons of mass destruction" back then. He did have them, and he used them on Iraqis who had helped the Americans in the Gulf War. You see, the Americans made a deal with a large number of Iraqis that they would help them...

EDINBURG — A post-war Iraq should yield an "Iraq for the Iraqis and a democracy," former President Bush told a crowd of Rio Grande Valley students Thursday, but where his thoughts differed from the current president, No. 41 wouldn't say. Before speaking at a $625-a-plate dinner for Valley business leaders, Bush opened himself up to questions from a panel of high school and college students, but prescreened queries kept the conversation tame. More than 1,000 students welcomed the president's appearance as part of the University of Texas Pan American Foundation's third annual Outstanding Leadership Series. There are some differences in...

HOUSTON (AP)--President Bush's parents were ``overjoyed'' to learn of Saddam Hussein's capture last weekend, the former president said Wednesday in his first public remarks about the arrest. Former President Bush, who spoke briefly to reporters while touring the vascular surgery program at the Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center, acknowledged he had ``great pride'' in the news. ``But it's a far more important and wonderful blessing for our country,'' he said. ``It was one magical moment. It made up for the fact that (President Bush) invited me for Thanksgiving and didn't even show up ... because he was in Baghdad.'' He...

Much has already been written as to why the Bush “Road Map” is dangerous for Israel, why it rewards terrorism, etc., etc. So I won’t bother to focus on the obvious. After all, we in Israel have already lived through the Rogers Plan, the Vance Plan, the Reagan Plan, the Mitchell Plan, the Tenet Plan, the Saudi Plan and probably some other plans I’ve forgotten about - all of which are basically the same, including the Bush “Road Map” Plan. In essence, all of these Plans boil down to this: Israel, the victim, is labeled the aggressor and must give...

Bush Sr. Defends U.S. Plan to Attack Iraq ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON (AP) - Former President Bush said Wednesday the United States is obligated as a world leader to protect itself and other nations against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. "If we've learned nothing else in the wake of Sept. 11, we've learned that we've got an obligation to protect our people, and others as well, from international terror," said Bush, who was president from 1989-1992 and led allied forces against Saddam in the Persian Gulf War. The father of the current president added, "Only the United States can lead in taking...

Disabled Vietnam vet retired Cat. James Smith, whose son James was killed during the disastrous raid in Somalia memorialized in the movie "Black Hawk Down," took exception Sunday to ex-President Clinton's recent attempt to blame President Bush's father for the 1993 debacle during a recent interview with Washington, D.C. TV station WJLA. "He seems to forget that when Bush number one sent troops into Somalia he sent them in by the tens of thousands. And they had complete armor, mechanized infantry, artillery, air cover support," Smith told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg. While Bush the elder was president, the Somali warlords...

Former US president George Bush on Friday spoke out on behalf of Arab leaders, many of whom still maintain relations with him. Asked about the seeming embrace of Iraq by Arab states at the Beirut summit last month, Bush told NBC's Today show: "I don't think they support Saddam Hussein. I think if that was the interpretation, it's totally erroneous. I know Crown Prince Abdullah very, very well, and he doesn't like Saddam Hussein." Asked about critics who say the Bush administration has erred by not identifying Arafat as a terrorist, and by being reluctant to apply the Bush doctrine...
