WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House said Monday that a "significant" deal with Republicans on cutting government spending and raising the nation's debt limit is still possible, even as the administration hardened its stance on the need for increased tax revenue to be part of any agreement. President Barack Obama made his first direct foray into the deficit negotiations Monday. He met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the Oval Office for about 30 minutes Monday morning, and planned to meet with Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell in the early evening. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama's meeting with...

Sarah's explanation of why she legitimized the birther conspiracy theorists feeds right into her victimhood storyline: Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask … which they have repeatedly. Ah yes... Palin was a victim of a massive left wing conspiracy that forced her to courageously step down as Alaska's governor. So it's...

What with the Left's obsession with "tea-bagger" references and calling Sarah Palin a "MILF" or "TWILF," perhaps it is time for the DNC to dump the Donkey symbol and go with this symbol. They giggle uncontrollably when someone says something that they consider to be dirty. Beyond swear words and sexual innuendo, their vocabularies are very, very limited. They live in their own little world where they and only they are smart while at the same time worshiping MTV and mindless pop culture. They view everyone who does not live in their little world to be losers and worse. Beavis...

One of the most damaging accusations you can level at opponent is call that individual a racist in one form or another. And that's the tactic MSNBC and others left-wing opponents of Rush Limbaugh are taking to thwart his bid to purchase the St. Louis Rams. During a segment on MSNBC on Oct. 13, former Pulitzer Prize winner Karen Hunter appeared to voice her opposition to the Limbaugh's NFL bid. She made one of the most outrageous - likening Limbaugh's ownership of an NFL team to being a plantation owner, a metaphor that invokes the image of antebellum South during...

PARIS (AFP) - President Jacques Chirac has hailed inspirational captain Zinedine Zidane despite his dismissal for headbutting in the World Cup final loss to Italy, as the French team returned home in no mood to party. The scheduled parade down the famed Champs Elysees boulevard in Paris was cancelled on the wishes of French coach Raymond Domenech after seeing the team lose on penalties in Sunday's final in Berlin. Chirac, who attended the match where Zidane was red-carded for headbutting the chest of Italian defender Marco Materazzi, made only a veiled allusion to the incident. "What I want to say...

BERLIN (AP) -- Zinedine Zidane cut short his dazzling World Cup and closed his career with an ugly head butt -- and a loss. The France captain was given a red card for slamming the crown of his bald head into the center of Italy defender Marco Materazzi's chest after the two exchanged words while walking down the field in extra time. The game was tied 1-1 when Zidane was sent off, head bowed, in the 110th minute Sunday. Without their sharpshooting captain, France couldn't unlock Italy's defense and went on to lose in a shootout, 5-3. Zidane's strike was...

PLANO — An unexpected visitor suddenly showed up at a Plano elementary school and broke inside. All was quiet at Hickey Elementary Sunday until a surveillance camera caught images of a goat on the premises butting heads with a glass door. "Being a male goat, they're kind of territorial," said Jim Dunlap, PISD outdoor learning center. "If they see another male goat, they will try to establish some sort of domain and they will butt heads." The goat's horns rammed into the glass more than two dozen times until he broke through the glass. Dunlap said he believes the goat...

Religious freedom since 1905 – any progress in Russia? By Irina Budkina, Editor of the http://www.samstar.ru Old Believer website One hundred years ago, Tsar Nicholas II's decree on religious tolerance formally freed Russia's religious minorities from state restriction and persecution. Today, Russia's religious minorities can legitimately ask how much progress has been achieved since then, argues Irina Budkina, an Old Believer and editor of a website on Old Belief in Samara region http://www.samstar.ru, in this personal commentary for Forum 18 News Service http://www.forum18.org . (The Old Believer movement rejected changes in the 17th century Russian Orthodox Church.) Officials – particularly...

Hoaxer targets army wife with false death callSAVANNAH, Georgia (AP) -- Military police are investigating a cruel hoax in which a man wearing an Army dress uniform falsely told the wife of a soldier that her husband had been killed in Iraq. Investigators are trying to determine why the man delivered the false death notice and whether he was a soldier or a civilian wearing a military uniform. "We're taking it extremely seriously. Whatever motivation was behind it, it was a sick thing to do," said Fort Stewart spokesman Lt. Col. Robert Whetstone. Last month, 19,000 soldiers from the Fort...

WASHINGTON (AFP) - America's ongoing military entanglement in Iraq (news - web sites) has become President George Bush (news - web sites)'s Vietnam, US Senator Edward Kennedy, a leading member of the opposition Democratic party, said. The harsh words refer to the US role and ultimate defeat in the 1964-1975 Vietnam war. Iraq is "clearly is George Bush's Vietnam," said Kennedy, speaking on CBS's "Face The Nation" program. Kennedy then blasted Bush's claim in an interview in Sunday's Washington Post that his Iraq policy was endorsed by the US public because of his November 2004 re-election victory. "I think that's...

The Rev. Jesse Jackson warned Tuesday that if the November election ends in controversy, Democrats will fight back much more fiercely than they did after the 2000 election. (snip) "If it's reasonably close, we're headed toward a battle like we've never seen before," Jackson said. "But this time around we must not be passive in the face of it."

For those that don't know what "Jumped the shark" means: There used to be this pop-culture craze, a 70's T.V. show called "Happy Days" The show's popularity was unsurpassed, it was a marketing, ratings, mania bonanza! Each episode got a little more fantastic.. Then.. They announced for 6 weeks in a row that Fonzie was going to jump his Motorcycle over a live shark in a tank in the parking lot of Arnold's. Well, Fonzie jumped the shark, and the shows ratings promptly dropped like a brick. Which brings me to my question... Exactly -when- did Bill O'Reilly jump the...

To: Mr. Robert Fisk (& The Independent) A while ago, we read your article entitled "Robert Fisk: Why does John Malkovich want to kill me?” Although we are well aware that any objective coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is strongly resisted by certain groups, we were shocked to see how far they are willing to go. We are writing to let you know that we support you, admire and respect your persistent endeavor to voice the truth. This hate mail emanates from a minority, (albeit a very vocal, well organized and connected one). Still, they dread the day truth will...
