  • BuzzFeed News employees vote to unionize after mass layofffs [sic](LOLOLOL)

Employees at BuzzFeed News announced Tuesday they have voted to unionize with the NewsGuild of New York, claiming in a statement that they have "legitimate grievances about unfair pay disparities, mismanaged pivots and layoffs, weak benefits, skyrocketing health insurance costs, diversity and more." Why it matters: This comes weeks after the company laid off more than 220 employees, or roughly 15% of its workforce, including jobs within its news division. It is a huge blow to BuzzFeed's leadership, which has in the past suggested that it could be a better advocate for employees than a union could be.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) is facing scrutiny over her treatment of congressional staff and her workplace demeanor, just days ahead of her decision about whether she will run for president in 2020. A number of former staffers who worked for Klobuchar spoke anonymously to BuzzFeed News, accusing the senator of often berating staff over small mistakes and creating a hostile work environment. BuzzFeed interviewed eight former aides and reviewed dozens of emails. A spokesperson for Klobuchar did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill. BuzzFeed reported that Klobuchar often yelled, threw papers and flung objects and...

“I think your move makes the story less serious and credible[.] I think you damaged its impact,” Tapper wrote to Smith on Jan. 10, 2017, just after BuzzFeed published the dossier in full on its website. ..... “Collegiality wise it was you stepping on my d!ck,” Tapper responded.

Ahead of Michael Cohen’s testimony, read the original paper trail behind the campaign to build Europe’s tallest tower in Moscow — and how it played out alongside Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. SNIP BuzzFeed News is today publishing a cache of internal Trump Organization documents that lay bare the secret negotiations that continued long after Cohen claimed the deal had been abandoned. The documents, many of which have been exclusively obtained by BuzzFeed News, reveal that — despite Trump’s claim that the development was never more than a passing notion — the effort to get the tower built was long-running, detail-oriented...

BuzzFeed is fake news. If there was ever any doubt, that doubt was erased on January 17th, when their news branch (creatively dubbed BuzzFeed News) published a report alleging Donald Trump had directed his attorney Michael Cohen to lie to congress. If their report were true, it could very well be the catalyst to impeachment proceedings. In other words, if their report were true, it would be one of the critical news stories in U.S. history. advertisement There’s just one problem: it wasn’t true. According to Peter Carr, a spokesman for Robert Mueller’s office: “BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to...

Vice Media CEO Nancy Dubuc announced to employees Friday morning that the news outlet will slash its headcount by 10 percent as part of a “strategic” restructuring. A Vice Media spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that 250 of its 2500 staffers will be let go to refocus its growth efforts in production and branded content. Employees from departments, including finance and IT, are expected to be impacted by the decision. “Having finalized the 2019 budget, our focus shifts to executing our goals and hitting our marks,” Dubuc (pictured) wrote in a company-wide memo. “We will make Vice the best manifestation...

A federal judge in Florida on Wednesday ordered the public release of dozens of documents kept under seal during BuzzFeed’s lawsuit over the Steele dossier. District Court Judge Ursula Ungaro ordered the documents be made public by Feb. 8. More than 40 records used in the case are listed in the order. Ungaro’s decision will shed light into the discovery process during the defamation case, which included depositions with dossier author Christopher Steele and the founders of Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm that hired Steele. Ungaro ruled in BuzzFeed’s favor Dec. 19, 2018. The website was sued in February...

PewDiePie is a Nazi! Jordan Peterson is anti-feminist! Ben Shapiro is alt-right! Also, the moon landing never happened, and the earth is flat, Bush did 9/11, all memes are highly organized hate campaigns from 4chan, and the frogs are turning gay. Now that we’re clear on all that, we need to talk about just how horrible the mainstream media has been lately. In a crazy new article that apparently took all of their remaining staff to write, Buzzfeed comes out swinging at YouTube for spreading misinformation, blaming their algorithm. Running its own experiments and citing an already debunked report from...

Monday, January 28, 2019 Author by Ben Thompson If you remove the societal impact, just for a moment, the story of publishers’ demise — first newspapers, and now digital-only companies like BuzzFeed and Huffington Post, which both announced significant layoffs last week — is rather banal: infinite competition combined with an inferior product resulted in failed business models.Infinite competition is the result of the Internet: any piece of content is only a tap away, a far cry from a world where geographic areas were dominated by a small number of newspapers. The inferior product is advertising: when newspapers were the...

The liberal media is not having a good month. Two fake news stories back-to-back in a 48-hour period. You have BuzzFeed claiming that President Trump directed ex-personal lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress over a real estate deal in Moscow. The co-author of the piece, Jason Leopold, has a history of being a fake news generator, and that reputation is still alive a well; the Mueller investigation issued a statement gutting Buzzfeed’s story like a fish. Second, the MAGA hat kids hounding a Native American man at the Lincoln Memorial during the March for Life. Again, it didn’t happen....

WASHINGTON -- First, Buzzfeed News ran a story Jan. 16 that asserted President Donald Trump told his long-time private attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about talks with Russia about a Trump Tower in Moscow. The sources? Two anonymous federal law enforcement officials. By Friday of that week, a thin gruel of a story had put cable news in a ferocious feeding frenzy as pundits breathlessly pronounced that, "if true," Trump should be impeached. Yes, they jumped on an anonymously sourced story that they wanted to be true, then cagily waved the "if true" disclaimer just in case reality...

It was remarkable to behold. In the space of a handful of weekend hours, the liberal media shot itself in its proverbial foot. Not once - but twice. The first time was a report from BuzzFeed. The internet news outlet had run with the story that ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen was telling investigators that President Trump had directed him to lie to Congress about the Trump Organization’s plans to build a luxury high-rise in Moscow. The media, hearing this, ran with it, swallowing the tale hook, line and sinker. Impeachment suddenly became the magic word of the day - excitedly...

One can never wear out Walter Lippmann’s observation that journalists traffic in stereotypes, not only because they enable “economy of effort.” The stereotypes we embrace also assure us of our own status, such that “any disturbance of the stereotypes seems like an attack upon the foundations of the universe.” This has been nicely demonstrated in the controversy over the Covington Catholic High School students at the Lincoln Memorial. A snippet of video was confidently interpreted as showing an encounter between racist white teenage male students and a dignified Native American Vietnam veteran solemnly banging on his drum in communion with...

BuzzFeed is cutting costs and getting leaner, but it still wants to get bigger — by exploring a deal with Group Nine. BuzzFeed began laying off 15 percent of its staff — about 200 employees — on Friday. Its next move could be a merger with Group Nine, another big digital publisher. Speculation about a tie-up between the two companies has been bubbling in the media industry for months, and sources familiar with both companies say the two have indeed been discussing a merger. The two companies aren’t close to a finalized deal and may ultimately find different partners. If...

Is it true that Donald Trump's bad habits are contagious? Is it true that his Democratic opponents and, even more, his critics in the press are increasingly given to terminological inexactitudes, if not downright lies? Sure looks like it. Last week, large parts of the press -- we're looking at you, CNN and MSNBC -- were gleefully reporting and commenting on the BuzzFeed story about President Trump having allegedly ordered his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to members of special prosecutor Robert Mueller's staff. There were lots of smiles and (if we can use the word to describe...

After news came out about mass layoffs at HuffPost, Buzzfeed and Gannett -- in the midst of the media's relentless smear-job against the Covington Catholic students -- right-wing Twitter had a field day. Tons of leftist journalists announced they were laid off on Twitter and the top meme was telling them to "learn to code" -- which is the same advice the media gave middle Americans whose jobs are being taken in traditional industries. Talia Levin, who was hired by Media Matters last year after being fired by the New Yorker for smearing an ICE agent as a Nazi because...

BuzzFeed is preparing lay off 15 percent of its workforce, according to an internal email obtained by The Hill. In an email sent to BuzzFeed staff on Wednesday, CEO Jonah Peretti said the media company would be doing layoffs "next week" across the company. "I’m writing with sad news: we are doing layoffs at BuzzFeed next week. We will be making a 15% overall reduction in headcount across the company," Peretti wrote. "I’m sending this tonight because I wanted you to hear it from me directly instead of from the press." Peretti wrote in the internal memo that BuzzFeed needs...

BuzzFeed is planning to lay off about 15% of its workforce, according to people familiar with the situation, as the company seeks to reorient itself in a shifting digital-media landscape. The cuts could affect around 250 jobs, the people said. The firm, among the most high-profile digital-native publishers, is also looking to realign its resources to invest more in promising areas of the business like content-licensing and e-commerce, one of the people said.

BuzzFeed News has obtained files that the news outlet says contradict President Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani's recent claims that there were "no plans" drawn up for Trump Tower Moscow. The online outlet reported on the files on Tuesday, after Giuliani in a New Yorker interview claimed that plans for Trump Tower Moscow did not extend beyond "a letter of intent." "The only thing that ever happened was that [Trump's team] submitted a letter of intent about a possible project in Moscow that never went beyond that," Giuliani said. "No money was ever paid, no plans were ever made. There...
