Is it your opinion that because

    a. a horse broke its harness

    b. a horse tripped and fell

    c. a horse on the job less than 3 weeks dropped dead on its way to work of unknown causes . . . .

that the carriage industry is abusive and should be banned?

    What's wrong with this picture?

When the FIV positive cat Guilderland resident Gerard Sagliocca and his sister obtained from a rescue stopped eating, they took the cat to the vet.

The vet recommended euthanasia. They rejected her recommendation, saying that the much-loved cat gave no indications of distress and had a good quality of life at home.

Sagliocca and his sister took the cat home to the duplex they share.

    The vet called the cops.

The cops went to the Sagliocca home, seized the cat and took him back to the vet's office.

And then the vet killed the cat.

Then at the vet's insistence, Sagliocca was then charged with cruelty to animals. The vet believes Sagliocca belongs in jail, even though the cat lived with his sister and he rarely saw the cat.

In Albany County, New York, animal cruelty is punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a $1000 fine, plus a mandatory ten years as the target of PETA vigilantes and other nut cases, public scorn, discrimination and humiliation through placement of the offender's home address, photo and other personal information on the county's brand-new online Animal Abuser Registry.

Remember: Sagliocca did not injure the cat. The cat had ample access to food, water, and shelter -- along with toys, a loving home and all the other perks of life as a house cat.

Sagliocca's "crime" centers around a refusal to kill. Instead, he and his sister wanted to take the cat home.

    full story here.

Salamander, is it your opinion that because a horse broke its harness, or a horse tripped and fell, or in the case of Charlie, a horse dropped dead of unknown causes, that the carriage industry is abusive to horses and should be banned?

The case that brought about this ruling involved the seizure of a horse named Grace with a body condition score of 0 (zero) without a warrant. The Court confirmed that the seizure was legal because the horse was in imminent danger of dying. This is what the mare looked like when rescued.

And this is her four months later.

The rescuers were surprised also that she didn't have major organ damage. She lived another year (she was about 28 yrs old) and was euthanized after a bout of colic. Her rescuers had promised her she would never suffer again.

Even though animals are property, there should be special exceptions to protect them from severe neglect or harm. Abuse is a defined crime, not an opinion, but that's not going to stop PETA and other extreme animal rights groups from having a field day with this ruling. My friend commented on the article and I agree with her statement:

Although I back the court's ruling, it is a fine line between protecting the welfare of animals and animal rights. In this instance, there was no doubt that the horse in question was at death's door and in need of immediate rescue. Her very life depended on violating private property rights. This is a rare circumstance and the court's ruling should be upheld for only this type of circumstance when there is immediate danger to the welfare of an animal. Grace fit the legal definition of an abused/neglected animal. This was not a judgement call which animal rights activists would take advantage of.

Rescuing an animal from abuse should be like rescuing children from abuse. It needs to be done carefully so as not to deny parental/ownership rights, but it should be an option when abuse/neglect is certain.

The problem with animal rights is that its ultimate goal is to end the human/animal relationship and "restore" animals to a more "natural" state. That would be a death/extinction sentence for domesticated animals.

I oppose the animal rights agenda. I fully support animal welfare.

The RARAs often use this photo of Oreo during their protests. Poor abused horse . . .

What they don't tell ya is Oreo was working his regular shift when a bundle of scaffolding at a nearby construction site crashed to the pavement. Startled by the unusual loud noise, Oreo bolted and headed west in the direction of his stable. He was calmly waiting at a red light on 9th Avenue, when he was approached by pedestrians and police officers. The cops shot him with tranquilizers which caused him to collapse ... giving the RARAa a wonderful photo opportunity. Here's a video a passerby took of the horse before the police arrived.

Charlie did drop dead ... cause unknown. He had been on the streets only a couple of weeks and Dr. Corey, the head of the ASPCA equine unit, lost her job when she tried to clarify the ASPCA statement saying that Charlie was abused. There is an unhealthy partnership between the ASPCA and NYCLASS which coverts the stable properties.

The other horse in that article got "his hind leg got caught in the carriage shaft, causing him to hit the ground". He tripped, he didn't collapse.

Pumpkin's bridle broke and horse followed his usual route within Central Park and exited the park at where a group of horse carriage drivers were waiting to corral him. No one was hurt.

This is the abuse the horses, the drivers, and their passengers face constantly.

Who gets to decide what is animal-cruelty?

There are groups of vocal and politically connected animal rights activists who want to ban horse drawn carriages in New York City. They say it’s abusive for draft horses to pull buggies.

Yet every equine expert who has examined the horses and inspected their stables say the horses are happy and well cared for.

    Thank you!

It seems to me that it’s almost a witch hunt with the Girl Scouts based on very shaky allegations that seem to only exist in internet blogs. There is a ton of misinformation out there about the Girl Scouts floating around the internet. Don’t take it all at face value. I have looked through the various anti-GSA sites and found that they all link each other and re-circulate the same stories. And the merry-go-round of recirculating stories tends to pop up every February when the cookies go on sale. Hummm...

Is everyone (else) going to stop shopping at Target, WalMart, Costco, K-Mart and other stores because they support gay marriage and Planned Parenthood? I don’t think so because it’s impossible. You could never shop anywhere, ever!

There is an issue here at stake ... not just the business one but the emotional one. There is a child involved and an innocent child! The link between Planned Parenthood and my Girl Scout troops is weaker than the link between Planned Parenthood and Target. I think scouting is a valuable tool in raising children and I do not want to abandon the program to the enemy. I intend to stay and hold the line as long as possible. This organization does some great things.

It seems to me that it’s almost a witch hunt with the Girl Scouts based on very shaky allegations that seem to only exist in internet blogs. The Girl Scouts official policy is, “The Girl Scout organization does not take a position on abortion or birth control, and these topics are not part of the Girl Scout program or our materials. We believe these matters are best discussed by girls with their families.”

If you don’t want to take their word for it, the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry investigated the Girl Scouts already and have refuted the allegations for years. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops started an investigation two years ago and hasn’t yet ruled against the Girl Scouts—they expressed concerns to the Girl Scouts and the Girl Scouts made some changes and everything settled down—but no ban. I trust Church organizations more so than stuff I find online—so that’s good enough for me.

But if a person really still has a problem with it, don’t buy the cookies. If you really want to support the local girls and leave the national organization out of it, you can always give a donation directly to the troop. 100% of the money given to a troop stays in a troop and is spent on those girls.

How dare you politicize something like this!

I know that I do what is right by my girls and if you have a POLITICAL agenda you can keep your comments to yourself. This is about little girls and teaching them to be leaders, not about abortion rights or gender identity issues. Cookies selling teaches them about business, budgeting and self esteem.

Many of our scouts come from homes with financial strains. These girls would not get the opportunities to do half the things they get to do if it were not for Girl Scouts and the funds that come from cookie sales.

Boycotting Girl Scout cookies is idiotic, as is your reasoning behind said boycott. They’re CHILDREN that want to be in a silly little CLUB. How ridiculous, that you have let your personal vendetta get in the way of a child’s happiness. Shame on you!

I just read your article and it backs up what I wrote . . . the proceeds from Girl Scout cookie sales are not funneled to the national scouting organization.

We are small troops in a rural section of Florida ... there are six girls in our Brownie troop and three in our Junior troop. We are 100 miles from our local council and 1,100 miles from New York City where they hired a big bad lesbian. If the woman does her job well, I could care less what she does in her bedroom. I’m quite sure she’s not going to appear at one of our meetings and give a lecture on same sex relationships.

Instead of discussing abortions we march in parades (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vznq_zJpA2o&list=UUSoGIdE4CWdC0tonXvQF3Bw) ... usually leading the way with the flag. We go bowling and skating and camping and learn juggling and make crafts. In the next couple of weeks we’re going to have a flash-mob singing event in the town square, a hike in the forest, a family fun run, and a weekend camping trip.

I really sorry that you can’t see the good things about girl scouts.

We are ‘Community Partners’ with the VFW Veterans Village (http://vfwveteransvillage.org/index.php). We maintain their garden, participate in their programs, and make gifts for them. We also have our weekly meetings at their facility.

Most of the girls are also members of 4-H. I’m sure that’s another organization you don’t approve of ... but since you seem to be a bitter person, your opinion means nothing to me.

The proceeds go to the troop and local council. My little Brownie sold more than 117 boxes in under two hours outside the corner grocery store today. And tomorrow we'll be at Walmart.

I recall twenty years ago an owner of a local clothing store that I frequented who got busted for dope. I took my business elsewhere. No personal danger involved, but I certainly wasn’t going to conduct business with such an individual.

    To each his own . . .

but I wouldn't miss a Wednesday at The Mojo Grill where the kids eat for free ... the clown paints faces ... the magician visits tables ... the ponies give rides ... and the kids karaoke.

Everything you eat, drink and smoke while you are pregnant affects your baby. If you drink alcohol, it can hurt the baby’s growth. The baby may have physical and behavioral problems that can last for the rest of his or her life. Children born with the most serious problems caused by alcohol have fetal alcohol syndrome.

Children with fetal alcohol syndrome may:
    •Be born small.
    •Have problems eating and sleeping.
    •Have problems seeing and hearing.
•Have trouble following directions and learning how to do simple things.
•Have trouble paying attention and learning in school.
    •Need special teachers and schools.
•Have trouble getting along with others and controlling their behavior.
•Need medical care all their lives.

It is not a simple state’s right issue as it ultimately affects the health, welfare, and safety of the entire country as it leads to national sloth, decay, and WEAKNESS. Anyone who doubts this should investigate the Chinese Opium wars which lead to the Chinese “century of humiliation”.

I thought this thread was about marijuana . . .

Marijuana is no more “immoral” than wine, beer, or Robitussin.

The moral aspect comes in when you purposefully alter your state of mind with it.

Most people I know drink wine or beer to purposefully alter their states of mind.

The owner of one of the stables has a 23-acre farm in East Earl just to ‘vacation’ her horses. Many of the carriage horses come from Amish farms.

The guy who wants to build the electric buggies is none other than Steve Nislick ... the guy who founded NYCLASS ... the guy who wants to build on the stables’ properties ... the guy who spent $1.5 million to buy the election.

He plans on renting them to the current carriage drivers for $21,000 each, per year.

If a carriage driver wanted to drive automobiles, he/she’d drive a taxi. But they are horse people.

The size of this land is about 1 1/2 acres. 64,000 sq ft.

The horse carriage ban is about real estate and political payback ... not about horse welfare.

On February 10th and 11th Clinton Park Stables is having an Open House. Tour the gorgeous stable ... meet the horses and see for yourselves how well loved and cared for they are. Bring your dog along for a ride in Central Park!

This is not about cruelty to horses … it’s about real estate! Here's some background.
