Obama utility bill scam hits Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Thousands have already fallen for the scam that leads people to think the Obama administration will pay off utility bills up to $1,000.00.

One local family that fell for the scam says they thought it was a miracle but now paying back all those bills is a nightmare.

“It’s just all a game to somebody, you know, we’re talking about our lives, our family, our home, our kids and that’s the hardest part for me,” Amy Turner said.

Amy Turner and her husband Frank say they heard about an Obama Administration grant that was helping people pay their utility bills from a close family friend. Turner says they were given a routing number and says they were told the account number to use was on the back of their social security cards. Turner says they paid all their bills and it seemed like a miracle.

“When my husband called and used the routing and account numbers I would have thought if they didn’t coincide in some way that it would be impossible to get a confirmation number and not only that but to call back and ask what your balance is and they say your balance is zero,” Turner said.

One of those companies was Tipmont REMC in Tippecanoe County. Tipmont REMC CEO Tim McCarthy says this is the first case of the scam he’s seen and all return check fees were waived for this family.

Turner says they found out the Obama grant, as they called it, was a scam from an article about the routing number they’d been using. Turner says she wants everyone to know that even skeptics sometimes fall victim to scams.

“I just hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else. That’s my thing, I just feel like I was made a fool of,” Turner said.

Turner and her husband now have the burden of paying all their bills that they thought were paid off.

Turner says she lives by the motto ‘if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is’ but says the convincing confirmation of zero balances for their bills fooled her this time.

Turner says the routing number she used was 124085024.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Two Lafayette men face several felony charges after their alleged involvement in a gang-related burglary.

Charges were filed yesterday against 19-year-old Benigno Astorga-Quiroga and 18-year-old Efrain Antonio Contreras.

According to court documents, a Lafayette man returned home for lunch on January 28, when he found his back door had been broken into and his guns were missing from a locked case. In February, shots were fired at a Lafayette wedding reception by three uninvited males. Police determined the guns used were from the January burglary.

According to the documents, police interviewed Astorga-Quiroga, who admitted he was a member of the Southside 13 gang.

Astorga-Quiroga and Contreras were charged with burglary, theft, conspiracy to commit burglary and criminal gang activity.

Purdue researchers: H1N1 about to peak
    WLFI TV18 ^ | 10-21-2009 | WLFI TV18

Posted on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 12:20:25 PM by blf1776

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Two Purdue University math researchers have predicted the novel H1N1 flu will peak so early that planned vaccinations will not have a large effect on the number of people infected.

Sherry Towers, from Purdue’s statistics department, and Zhilan Feng, from Purdue’s math department, used a mathematical model to predict the spread of the disease. They used data collected by the Centers for Disease Control in May, June, July and August.

The result? The model predicted that H1N1 infections will reach their peak in either the week before or the week after Halloween.

The researchers said this early peak for the disease mean that the vaccination campaign will only reduce infections by, at most, 6%. However, as the model also predicted that 63% of the US population will have been infected by the end of the year, a 6% reduction could still mean that the vaccinations could save thousands of lives.

While 63% of the US population sounds like a huge figure, Towers explained that this figure represents the total number of infected people, not the number of people showing symptoms.

“In the paper we point out that many studies have shown that while a large number of people may be infected by influenza, only about 40 percent of those people who are infected actually show signs of illness,” Towers said. “So, in our paper, we actually state that in the end only about 25 percent of people will likely fall ill.”

Towers said they do not want to discourage anyone from getting an H1N1 vaccination.

Feng cautioned their model was “very simple,” and noted that the pair had to make a lot of assumptions to get a result.

“You have to be careful about following the prediction of the study,” said Feng.

The study appears in the October 15 edition of www.eurosurveillance.org .

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - His teachers said he was a top student, a top athlete and a top airman. Now they’re mourning the loss of a former student.

First Lieutenant Joel Gentz, a Purdue graduate, was killed in helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Wednesday. His high school teachers sat down with WLNS-TV’s Brittany Gray to remember him.

“He’s the kind of kid that you can compare other kids to,” one teacher said. “He’s the kid that, we had another phenomenal senior boy in the class of 2010 and we would say, ‘You know, that’s a Joel Gentz.’”

Eric Swager first met Gentz doing what he did best-taking a challenge and tackling it. Like honors and AP Physics.

“Whether he was instantly successful or whether he wasn’t successful and frustrated, he’d just keep on hammerin’,” Swager said.

But he said their bond grew even more when his role changed from teacher to coach. Gentz joined the cross country team his senior year.

And that bond held strong even years later, when the two ran the Boston Marathon.

“I think he got a kick out of the fact that he beat me at Boston, which, you know, he should, he was a lot faster than I was,” Swager said.

His teachers said that’s the kind of person Gentz was. He kept in touch, even while away at Purdue.

“He was a great young man,” one teacher recalled. “The country should be very, very proud of him, very, very proud of him. He was the best. That’s the best way I can describe it.”

    Family speaks about Brown’s health

    Ava Wilhite
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Family members said Friday that Lekeia Brown has yet to be moved from her Methodist hospital room to the burn unit.

They said 24-year-old Lekeia Brown is not feeling better yet, and is still unable to open her eyes. Lekeia Brown is suffering from Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Brown said the condition began after her medication was switched during her time at the Tippecanoe County Jail.

“I kept complaining and complaining then by the fourth week this is what I looked like,” said Lekeia Brown.

Brown was serving time in the Tippecanoe County Jail for not paying child support, when she said her seizure medication was changed. Lekeia Brown said she felt an immediate reaction to the new medication and notified nurses. She said nurses ignored her complaints and Lekeia Brown asked her sister-in-law Alysha Banks to help.

“I said, ‘My sister-in-law is in severe pain and no one is looking at her and it’s bad.’ No one called me back and the next morning she was rushed to the hospital,” said Banks.

Banks said the family is devastated.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff Tracy Brown said he cannot comment on the treatment Lekeia Brown received because of privacy laws. He said the department is investigating the incident to make sure all policies, producers and protocols were followed. He explained his medical staff includes three full-time nurses and doctor services are provided by a contractor.

“They are evaluating on a constant basis, that patient’s condition and trying to make a determination as to, ‘Has this condition arisen to the level that we need to consult or get outside help,’” said Tracy Brown.

Tracy Brown said inmates are given a medical complaint card which can be collected twice a day. He said his staff is in constant communication with the medical staff about the information they receive.

Tracy Brown said they book close to 8,000 inmates a year. Many of those inmates deal with a range of medical issues from the common cold to cancer treatment. He said he is always notified when an inmate is transferred to the hospital.

Purdue University Dean of Students Tony Hawkins said Gentz graduated from Purdue in 2007 and was in the Air Force ROTC while at Purdue. Hawkins was Gentz’s co-advisor for a student leadership group called Iron Key. He got to know Gentz well during the airman’s senior year at Purdue.

Hawkins describes Gentz as dedicated and proud of being in the Air Force.

“He was physically strong, mentally strong, had great strength of character, just an outstanding leader,” Hawkins said. “All of that was matched by a sense of compassion that he had for other people. That is why he wanted to go into the search and rescue. He wanted to be able to save other people and help them in great times of need. For that perspective, he was doing what he was trained to do and wanted to do. We are going to miss him tremendously.”

Hawkins said Gentz married another Purdue graduate.

He said Gentz couldn’t talk a lot about his training with the Air Force once he graduated, but he kept in contact with Hawkins and many people at the university.

    Gentz is originally from Michigan.

LOGANSPORT, Ind. (WLFI) - Jeremy Byrd and Josh Vernon are mapping out plans for a benefit event set to take place in June for the four-year-old Logansport girl who was taken from a home and sexually assaulted in a garage earlier this month.

A silent auction, food and games are scheduled. Byrd said hopefully kids will have fun and learn something as well.

“If we could get the message out to the parents and maybe the kids could learn something that not all bad guys are dressed in black. What to look for and things like that, especially with the community watch program,” said Byrd.

Byrd, a father of three and Vernon, a father of four, said what happened to the four-year-old hits home.

“I have four children and for something like that to happen here, as a father, you think to yourself ‘How can I help? or What can I do to help,” said Vernon.

“Both my daughters are young. The thought of something like that happening to them disgusts me and I wanted to help. There wasn’t much I could do and this made me feel like I was helping the family out,” said Byrd.

On June 12th Riverside Park will be filled with local bands, guest speakers, games and food. Both Byrd and Vernon said the event has already exceeded their expectations.

“It’s beyond how big we thought it would be. It’s really huge. Hopefully we can raise some money from the girl and her family,” said Vernon.

Money raised will be given to the girl’s family to help with medical expenses and other costs associated with her recovery.

“We’d like to make some money for the little girl and her family, but most of all we want to promote awareness and prevention methods,” said Vernon.

The ‘Keep the Children Safe’ event is June 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Riverside Park in Logansport

Anyone wishing to help out can call Jeremy Byrd at 765-532-4058.

Donations are also being accepted through a fund set up at Security Federal Savings Bank. Anyone wishing to donate can visit a branch location.

Byrd said so far many local businesses have donated food and prizes. He credits the work the city has done to help with the event as well.
