  • Congresswoman did not swear oath on a Bible

Kyrsten Sinema was sworn into Congress Monday, but with a twist: She didn’t swear on a Bible. The newly elected representative for Arizona’s 9th district swore her oath of office on a copy of the Constitution instead. Sinema refuses to confirm she is an atheist, as many believe, saying merely that she is “not a member of a faith community” and that all Americans deserve both “freedom of religion and freedom from religion.”

-snip- Luis, our previous caller, talked about Univision. For four years Univision did nothing but bash every potential Republican candidate. It didn't matter what they thought of Obama. The alternative was unacceptable. Now, this is why, by the way, I cringe when the Republicans and these brilliant consultants at the end of every election think that we have to become more like Democrats to win, which is essentially what they're saying. And look, I don't think I can ask this question too often. It is said now that the Republicans need to move significantly toward the direction of amnesty and...

The battle for the U.S. Senate between Tim Kaine and George Allen in Virginia may have been settled in the litter box instead of the ballot box if the tightly contested election had come down to about 6,000 votes given to a cat. It’s entirely possible that third-place finisher in Virginia is Hank the Cat, a Maine Coon who ran on a pro-feline, job-creation platform. In the current online results, Kaine is ahead of Allen by about 184,000 votes as of Thursday morning. The race was expected to be very close, and it was part of a record spending spree...

As the national vote total began to solidify last night, one question on the minds of Republicans was: Where are the missing voters? Last night it looked like Mitt Romney had received something like 10 to 15 percent fewer votes than John McCain had in 2008, even though his percentage of the overall vote was at least two points higher. What did this mean? Where did the voters go? They didn’t go to Barack Obama, because exit polls suggested he had basically turned out the same demographic support he had four years ago. So where are they? Did this suggest...

Obama Will View Hurricane Damage in New Jersey with Gov. Christie WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Obama will travel to New Jersey tomorrow to view the destruction wrought by Hurricane Sandy on the state. Scheduled to appear with Governor Chris Christie, Obama has suspended personal appearances at campaign events to respond to the storm. Speaking at the Red Cross headquarters in Washington today, Obama said his thoughts and prayers were with those who lost loved ones in the devastating hurricane, which has claimed at least ten lives in New York City alone. “Obviously this is something that is heartbreaking for the...

One of the states Democrats view as part of an electoral college firewall is still leaning slightly to the president, per Public Policy Polling: PPP's newest Nevada poll finds Barack Obama leading Mitt Romney 51/47, numbers exactly identical to what they were when we last polled the state two weeks ago. Obama is already well on his way to winning Nevada based on early votes that have been cast in the week. Among those who say they've already voted he has a 61/39 advantage. Romney is up 51/46 with those planning to vote between now and election day. ... Obama's...

Based on what I’ve been able to learn, this, from Mark Halperin, is as accurate a depiction of how the Obama team views the final stretch of the race as anything I’ve seen (via Taegan Goddard): Chicago remains sufficiently funded and emboldened by its own polling to compete for the final two weeks in all nine of the battlegrounds: Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia in the South; New Hampshire in the North; Iowa, Ohio, and Wisconsin in the Midwest; and Nevada and Colorado in the West. As they have in the past, Obama campaign officials say they expect to win...

Lots of buzz about the latest CBS News/Quinnipiac poll in Ohio, taken after the second debate, and especially about its methodology. Let’s take a look at the toplines first, which despite the rather silly sample shows Mitt Romney with the momentum in the Buckeye State: President Obama is holding on to a five-point lead over Republican Mitt Romney in Ohio, but that margin has been cut in half since September, according to a new Quinnipiac University/CBS News poll. Mr. Obama holds a 50 to 45 percent lead over Romney among likely voters in the Buckeye State, down from a 53...

Mitt Romney has a clear-eyed and self-aware view of his chances in the final debate Monday, according to top advisers: It will be almost impossible to win, since the debate is focused exclusively on foreign policy, a strength for President Barack Obama. This view isn’t merely about expectations-setting. Romney’s top advisers authentically worry that the swing voters they need to woo care little about foreign affairs right now. And, even if they did, the differences between the two men on many of the highest-profile issues — ending the Afghan war and the bloodshed in Syria — are too slight to...

Democrats will go into Election Day with a 90,000 voter registration advantage in Nevada, a smaller edge than in 2008 when Barack Obama carried the state. At the close of voter registration this week in the Mountain West swing state, there were 526,986 Democrats and 436,799 Republicans — a difference of 90,187 active voters. In 2008, at the close of registration, Democrats held a statewide advantage of 100,723 voters. While the statewide gap between the parties has closed slightly since 2008 — a year when Democratic registration surged in Nevada and Obama carried the state by 121,000 votes — the...

"Why is the Tea Party destroying the Republican Party?” That’s a leading question that I have been asked repeatedly from media pundits and Democratic politicians over the past three years. Over that time, Democratic politicians and media pundits have almost universally accused the Tea Party of bringing ruin to the Grand Old Party. According to this skewed narrative, Republican leaders were once bipartisan, rational and almost worthy of getting invitations to Georgetown cocktail parties. Now they are Manchurian candidates held captive by the right-wing beasts whose only goal is to infect the minds of real-life Nick Brodys who dominate the...

Judging by word coming from the Obama campaign, Tuesday night's second presidential debate at Hofstra University could be the greatest do-over in history. The president has been scrutinizing Mitt Romney's every word from the first debate in Denver, and now, nearly two weeks later, he has his answers ready to go. Early Monday morning, on the eve of Debate Two, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina sent out a long memo to reporters headlined "The Real Romney, Translated." The memo focused on nine statements Romney made during the first debate, plus a few from running mate Paul Ryan in the vice...

Rising enthusiasm and declining anxiety mark an energy boost among Mitt Romney’s supporters since he prevailed in the first presidential debate. But a persistent sense he’d favor the wealthy, combined with easing discontent with the nation’s direction, provide a retort for President Obama, raising the stakes for their second showdown this week. Romney now numerically leads Obama in strong enthusiasm and trails him in anxiety among potential voters, both firsts this season. At the same time, the number of registered voters in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll who say the country is headed seriously off on the wrong track...

In a rare example of political unity, both the Romney and the Obama campaigns have expressed concern to the Commission on Presidential Debates about how the moderator of the Tuesday town hall has publicly described her role, TIME has learned. While an early October memorandum of understanding between the Obama and Romney campaigns and the bipartisan commission sponsoring the debates suggests CNN‘s Candy Crowley would play a limited role in the Tuesday night session, Crowley, who is not a party to that agreement, has done a series of interviews on her network in which she has suggested she will assume...

Where is CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus? He seems to be the missing man in the unfolding Benghazi debacle. It is his agency, among others, which is being fingered by the White House for getting the Libya attack wrong. However, we know that within a very short time after the murder of our ambassador (an extraordinary occurrence) and others, our intelligence community did have the story straight: This was an organized al-Qaeda attack. Mitt Romney spoke to several empty seats Friday in Detroit, in a speech that offered Democrats more fodder for their attacks and failed to deliver the major economic address his campaign promised. Television cameras showed rows of empty chairs as Romney rehashed many of the policies and quips he'd used in previous speeches, made a few jokes that appeared to fall flat with the audience and said that his wife, Ann, drives "a couple of Cadillacs," which will likely give Democrats more ammunition for their depiction of him as rich and out of touch. "Well, Bret, your list is just not accurate," Romney said, when asked by Baier about changing his stances on climate change, abortion, gay rights and immigration. "So, one, we're going to have to be better informed about my views on issues," Mitt Romney sarcastically said to Baier. "My view is, you can look at what's written in my book. You can look at a person who has devoted his life to his family,...

Herman Cain said that he believes a majority of American Muslims share extremist views in an interview published on Monday. In an interview that included a few eyebrow-raising comments, Cain's exchange about American Muslims may get the most attention. "I have had one very well-known Muslim voice say to me directly that a majority of Muslims share the extremist views," Cain said in an interview with GQ.

KFC sure is flipping vegetarians the bird. The fried chicken franchise is rolling out a new "sandwich" with no bread - and extra meat. The "Double Down" is two fried filets that cradle two pieces of bacon, two slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and a squish of Colonel's Sauce. Feeling healthy? Go for the grilled chicken version instead. KFC initially tested the Double Down in Nebraska and Rhode Island and will fatten up menus nationwide with its new addition on April 12. The chain is literally counting down the seconds until the supersandwich goes on sale on...

  • Mark Levin vs. Glenn Beck: Was Scott Brown’s joke about his daughters inappropriate?

Two clips for you, one via the Right Scoop from this morning’s radio show and the other via Mediaite from tonight’s GB on Fox. When I saw the first one, I figured he simply stumbled onto the topic while riffing and it went from there; Mediaite was outrageously outraged by the “dead intern” comment, but whatever. It was a joke. To open tonight’s Fox show with the same material, though? Right out of the chute, the day after Brown delivered the biggest Republican victory since 2004? I don’t get it. Neither does Mark Levin, who’s been known to criticize Beck...

450+ comments already on the Levin/Beck thread. Evidently you guys are interested in this. Hopefully Politico’s interview will settle the debate about whether Brown’s kids really were outrageously outraged or not: “I had no idea he was going to do that. I saw the script and there was definitely no mention of that. It was totally off script,” Brown said in a phone interview squeezed in between classes at Boston College. She admitted that she was slightly embarrassed. “But that’s what gives people a chance to see my real dad.”… Conservative talk show host Glenn Beck slammed Brown’s acceptance speech...

Less than 15 minutes after the race was called for Republican Scott Brown, the first of what could be many conservative Democrats asks for leadership to put the brakes on health care reform. Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) congratulated Brown on his win and delivered a zinger: "In many ways the campaign in Massachusetts became a referendum not only on health care reform but also on the openness and integrity of our government process. It is vital that we restore the respect of the American people in our system of government and in our leaders. To that end, I believe it...
  • Rasmussen to do exit polling?

I just heard on Rush that Rasmussen will be filling in the gap for exit polling since news networks thought it was a Democrat lock and didn't plan for exit polling. So I suppose we can be on the look out for that. although it would probably be nice to not see anything until the votes are counted.
