  • Schools fret over overhaul ideas (TX)

    Conservative to Dubya
During the past few weeks I have listened as many Republican representatives and senators discussed the school finance issue. It has been disappointing that there is a "all-fund, no-fix" mindset.....always on how to get more money, rather than on how the money is being/will be spent.

Texas is the most conservative large-population state in the country. We have a conservative legislature and governor, elected by a conservative constituency. On the other side, however, is an entrenched public education establishment, which is engaged in the left's cultural war on conservative values across the nation, and increasingly in Texas as well.

This conflict gives the 79th legislature a unique opportunity, to ensure that Texas' public schools teach a curriculum focusing on America's core principles, requiring academic and cultural accountability as well as fiscal accountability in return for funding.

Lots of smart people, including the Texas Public Policy Foundation, make a good case that public education is already overfunded. For example, the state controller's office exposed my district as spending only 47% of budget on instruction-related activity. Rather than fix the problem, district trustees fudged the numbers, raised the number to 69%, and declared victory

My work during the 2002 statewide social studies textbook review cycle revealed stunning attempts by the left to revise American history. TEKS standards that drive textbook and curriculum content ignore American patriotism,
foster a negative view of American history, encourage inclusion of multiculturally correct events rather than historically significant ones, and do nothing to temper successful attempts by activist authors and administrators to introduce their leftist views.

More recently, we have seen a blatant attempt by Plano ISD administrators to silence religious free speech by Christian students.

In the Richardson ISD where I pay my school taxes, the Thanksgiving lesson plan ignored the holiday's Christian heritage, while referring to Pilgrims as "religious bigots"
and for some politically correct reason included a lengthy description of Ramadan and other Islamic holidays. The district's response? Remove citizen search capabilty from the district's website which contained the offensive material.

This same RISD threw a public temper tantrum in August 2003 in response to the legislature's mandate to recite the Pledges of Allegiance and honor a moment of silence and the beginning of each school day. What a message they sent to the students! And my tax dollars fund all of this.

It is difficult to have much sympathy for the Dallas ISD's projected budget shortfall of $15-30 million, given the DISD's past excesses including the extravagant severance package bestowed on departed superintendent Mike Moses by the very same trustees who now demand additional funding.

The emerging statewide testing scandal, which alleges organized, pervasive cheating on TAKS tests by administrators and teachers in as many as 400 schools suggests that institutional dishonesty is a primary response by the education establishment to the state's demands for academic accountability to parents and taxpayers.

In summary, Republican legislators must take the lead on school finance reform. But legislators need also to take advantage of the significant opportunity to demand adherence to the fiscal, academic, and cultural values held by the conservative majority that they represent.

DART has created a "crime corridor" into the affluent neighborhoods of North Dallas/Plano/Richardson.

Criminals ride in, steal, ride out.....and to add insult to injury....since DART operates on a quasi honor system... they don't even pay to ride.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Texas Freepers to support two property rights movements, see the 10-foot Klamath bucket and the 12 foot Jarbidge shovel, and have a good-ol' Texas time at a family oriented festival.

Saginaw, Texas is located off loop 820 north of Fort Worth, just west of the intersection of loop 820 and Interstate 35W.

The University of Minnesota is an embarrassment to its alumni.

It has allowed its Universtiy of Minnesota press to publish a book which claims pedophilia is a normal, natural act.

Its Department of Humanities has discontinued teaching Western Cililization, opting instead for Islamic terrorism.

Its Institute of Technology has become an indoctrination center for environmentalist mush.

I am embarrassed to be an alumni.

The "lesser evil" argument does not wash with me.

I can pick and choose between working for Republicans, or on Texas textbook issues, property rights, and gun rights.

Electing Republicans in November does not even make the cut.....they have abandoned their Conservative base...even though my spouse and I made over 800 phone bank calls in Florida during the first week of November 2000.

This afternoon, I watched CSPAN as ultra-liberal Congressman Peter DeFazio of Oregon lobbied to strengthen the weak bill that was passed out of committee.

Later, I listened to the news as Senator Barbara Boxer endorsed guns in the cockpit legislation.

Meanwhile, the Bush administration opposes the legislation.

The universe has surely turned upside down.

  • 2002 Texas GOP Convention - Observations from a Freeper Delegate

For months, I have been puzzled as the Bush administration, along with Congressional Republicans, have wandered to the left. Campaign Finance Reform, The abandonment of Brett Schundler and Judge Pickering, Israel, environmental issues, etc., were all issues in which Republicans have abandoned the Conservative base which has put them in power.

While a delegate to the Texas convention, I became even more frustrated with our leadership's attitudes towards the Conservative base.

The centralization of power in the state chairman rather than decentralization to the more-apt-to-be-Conservative SRECs.

Rick Perry, in his speech, rolled out more socialist programs without even taking a breath than any Republican in the history of Texas.

And after working very hard on platform issues at all three levels (precinct, senatorial, and state), it was insulting to find that our state leadership (Weddington and Barton) want us to line up and support Republican candidates come hell or high water..... (thanks for all you do)......but will not require our candidates to endorse our Conservative platform.

It is beginning to appear to me that the Republican party no longer is contributing much to the conservative versus liberal debate.

Rather, I see that our leadership at the national and local levels hungers for the power resulting from a victory in November far more than it cares about the core principles of our party.

I will vote for the candidates in November. But it will be hard to generate much enthusiasm to work for them in the meantime.

To the Editors, Dallas Morning News:

Having observed numerous occasions in which the Dallas Morning News has recoiled in self-righteous indignation at accusations of its persistent liberal bias, I was once again amused by the reinforcement of such bias, in Charlene Oldham's one-sided article "The opposition speaks at Exxon Mobil Meeting", May 30.

In typical DMN biased reporting, Oldham ignores key facts.

Having been at the site, I know that she did not reveal that there were less than 100 unbathed, nose-ringed, Ruckus-trained anarchists who showed up to protest Exxon Mobil; their small numbers thankfully precluding them from wreaking Seattle-type destruction on downtown Dallas.

She did not tell us that the left-wing rabble was confronted by a counter-demonstration consisting of at least as many pro-America, pro-Capitalism, Exxon Mobil supporters.

Reports by channels 4, 5, 8, and 11 were balanced, as well as the article in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Why not in the Dallas Morning News?

It is no wonder that my former carrier calls with offers to practically give your paper away.
