...**Avoiding unseen food hazards is the reason people often check the dates on food packaging. And printed with the month and year is often one of a dizzying array of phrases: “best by,” “use by,” “best if used before,” “best if used by,” “guaranteed fresh until,” “freeze by” and even a “born on” label applied to some beer. **

A new landmark was briefly added to Google Maps before disappearing on Tuesday night; the spot where President Joe Biden fell off his bike in Delaware. In June, the president took a tumble while trying to speak to reporters after a bike ride with his family in Rehoboth Beach. The viral moment captured the attention of right-wingers, including Donald Trump, who used the moment to mock Biden, 79. The accidental fall even led some to create the "Biden Bike Challenge" where people would visit the spot Biden fell and recreate the infamous photo of his fall.

A Russian security guard on his first day on the job lifted his boredom by doodling on a $1million painting. Anna Leporskaya's avant garde Three Figures, painted sometime in the early 1930s, features three humanoid figures devoid of any facial features. Devoid, that is, until the unnamed guard got his hands on a ballpoint pen. On day one of working at the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Centre in Yekaterinburg, the new employee decided to sketch a set of eyes on two of the figures, in what exhibition curator Anna Reshetkin described as "a lapse of sanity".

President Biden spent 28 percent of his first year as commander in chief back home in Delaware, worrying transparency advocates who note that he exempted his homes from visitor log disclosure. Biden, who returns to the White House on Monday night from his house in Wilmington, simply likes being home, his press representatives say.
  • How do you measure the cold on Mount Washington? 30º below zero, or cold enough to freeze spaghetti in mid-air

Temperatures across New England dipped below zero Tuesday, but on Mount Washington in New Hampshire, a different, more anecdotal metric described the treacherous weather: the air was cold enough to freeze a dish of spaghetti, fork included, in mid-air. Like a futuristic sculpture memorializing morning-after leftovers, the plate of pasta stood suspended in its place, its fork defying gravity as it hovered several inches off the snowy ground.

Seattle firefighters who lost their jobs over the COVID vaccine mandate dropped off their boots, said a prayer with their families, and cooked breakfast for the homeless in Occidental Park on Tuesday. On Monday, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan had indicated that the Seattle Fire Department reported 91% of its employees vaccinated against COVID-19, and 6% were allowed a religious or medical exemption. Seattle firefighter Andrew Pittman, who hasn’t been terminated, but doesn’t expect to be accommodated, was among those who left his boots and walked to the park. He told the Dori Monson Show he estimates about 100 firefighters will...

A government watchdog group says the U.S. military is leaving behind 75,000 vehicles, 600,000 weapons and 208 aircraft in Afghanistan as forces evacuate the country after a 20-year war. We’ve made the Taliban into a major U.S. arms dealer for the next decade,” said Adam Andrzejewski, CEO of Open the Books. “They now control 75,000 military vehicles. This is about 50,000 tactical vehicles, 20,000 Humvees they control about 1,000 mine-resistant vehicles, and even about 150 armored personnel carriers.” [snip] “We built them a pretty amazing war chest and now all of it is in the hands of the Taliban,” said...

As disgraced outgoing Gov. Andrew Cuomo packed his bags and sent his belongings to his sister’s house in his last days in office, he left something very important behind — his dog. Instead, Cuomo asked staff at his Albany mansion if they want to take care of his dog, Captain, the Albany Times Union reported, citing two state police sources. The sources also told the publication an Executive Mansion worker recently took Captain home but didn’t want to take care of the canine. But the outgoing governor fiercely denied the claim on Twitter — in what will likely be some...

Joe Biden mumbled through remarks during a climate summit on Friday. Things got super awkward after Dementia Joe veered off script. At one point Joe Biden pointed at the leader of the Navajo Nation and demanded they give his wife back. Ann Ronan Pictures/Print Collector/Getty Images Ann Ronan Pictures/Print Collector/Getty Images On April 23, 1910, Theodore Roosevelt gave what would become one of the most widely quoted speeches of his career. The former president—who left office in 1909—had spent a year hunting in Central Africa before embarking on a tour of Northern Africa and Europe in 1910, attending events and giving speeches in places like Cairo, Berlin, Naples, and Oxford. He stopped in Paris on April 23, and, at 3 p.m. at the Sorbonne, before a crowd that included, according to the Edmund Morris biography Colonel Roosevelt, “ministers in court dress,...

There’s no flitting around it, this is a rare bird. A cardinal that appears to be half-female and half-male was recently spotted in Pennsylvania. Jamie Hill, a birdwatcher for 48 years, documented the unusual sighting in a Facebook post on Sunday. “I had a once-in-a-lifetime, one in a million bird encounter!” he wrote. A friend of Hill’s had told him about an “unusual bird” seen at a bird feeder in Grand Valley in Warren County. The creature was bright red like a male cardinal on one side and brownish white like a female on the other.
