  • Install ceiling fan in room with low roof and no previous wiring in ceiling?

    05/17/2013 12:44:25 PM PDT · by Feline_AIDS · 59 replies
Question for you all, since you're always knowledgeable about these things. I want to put a ceiling fan in a room. The room is on one of the ends or "wings" of the house, has an HVAC "out" register in the near-middle of the ceiling, and is always always always scorching hot or freezing cold. I know this is caused by a lack of cross ventilation where the cold/hot air would be exchanged for hot/cold. The attic goes across the top of the main part of the house, then sort of squishes down to a lower roof where you can't...
  • Old cigarette smoke catching device?

I remember many years ago there was a machine on the market that (I think) was designed to reduce second-hand smoke. You inserted a real cigarette into the small device, and the device burned the cigarette for you and caught all the smoke that didn't come through the filter. Again, I think--I never used one. Does anyone recall the name of this product? Thanks in advance, FA

Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's funeral took place at St Paul's Cathedral, attended by the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and a swathe of public figures today. Quiet descended along the route her Union flag draped coffin took along the streets from Westminster. But not everybody supported the elaborate occasion's hefty £10m price-tag.

The mother of Newtown school massacre gunman Adam Lanza was a survivalist who was stockpiling food because she thought the world economy was on the verge of collapse. Nancy Lanza began hoarding such items because she feared that the financial crisis was going to bring about the end of civilized society. She reportedly became 'obsessed' with guns and taught Adam how to shoot, but on Friday he turned on her and blasted the woman to death while she laid in her own bed. Law enforcement sources told the Hartford Courant that she had not gotten up - and could have...

What's to stop the next Republican president* from walking into the oval office and using executive fiat to immediately close the EPA, defund and/or cripple Obamacare, and phase out the foodstamp program, among other things? Or at least make the requirements insanely strict for foodstamps and disability to make sure it's only used by the truly indigent? Is it just that he/she would become insanely unpopular among 47% of people? Or is there some legal reason he/she couldn't? Because it seems Obama's administration has nothing stopping them from doing similar things. *assuming he/she would be willing to do this

While googling I stumbled onto this MeFi thread, and I thought it might be interesting reading for some freepers. A young woman who was 6 weeks pregnant asked the community for experiences with abortion. The responses ranged from cautious to chilling, and not one regrets her abortion. No one--NO ONE--considers the baby. One person who kept her child mentions that the Planned Parenthood counselor told her she "must" get an abortion. Another said that she had no idea she could love someone like she loves her children, which was the best argument against terminating the pregnancy anyone probably could have...

Preppers, I'm new to this prepping thing, and I have some questions. I don't know exactly what you're all prepping for, because I know there are different concerns in different parts of the country. Californians, for example, are more concerned about the big one than I am on the east coast. I'm more concerned about an EMP than people in Wyoming, probably. But what about when the SHTF? I'm assuming by SHTF everyone means economic and thus governmental collapse. Is that right? No more USA? I have some questions that are ignorant and simple, but I was born that way,...

Alternate title for this post: Dreams from My Freightcar: A Story of Pace and Incompetence 1. Why can't private passenger trains operate like plane companies? 2. Why don't we rip up some old tracks and turn them into true high-speed elevated rail that travels at 500 kilometers/hr? 3. Why is Amtrack, as it is now, so inefficient and crappy when train transportation is supposedly so efficient (CSX's 430+miles/gallon fuel) 4. There seems to be an inverse relationship of luxury to efficiency. Plane travel is torture, but it's efficient. Train travel could be luxurious since it's not fuel inefficient, but is...

Just watched an episode of The First 48 (great show, btw), and the two suspects were Mexican nationals, aka illegal immigrants. The show did acknowledge both men are/were in the country illegally. The police got a surviving victim to identify the suspects in a photo line up. Then the police found them hiding out in rural west Texas and brought them in. Right off the bat they both asked for attorneys. Why do they have that right? In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence opens up about her gross-out, squirrel-skinning scene from Winter's Bone, the gritty 2010 flick which earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination. According to Lawrence, 21, that moment wasn't faked in the slightest. "I should say it wasn't real, for PETA," Lawrence told the mag. "But screw PETA." Needless to say, PETA didn't take too kindly to Lawrence's joking remark. "She's young and the plight of animals somehow hasn't yet touched her heart. Because the first movie is coming out soon, I have a question for anyone who has read The Hunger Games trilogy: What did you think was the ultimate political message of the books? Because I've heard some conservatives claiming that it's a politically conservative message, but I'm not convinced. Are we saying the series has a conservative theme because of the evil, oppressive government? How do you reconcile the possibly conservative themes with the end of the last book and the changes in government? (Which to me amounts to a political version of "Meet the new boss, same as the...

"If they don't let you go inside, you have to go anywhere. That's why El Paso is like that," Roberto Miranda said. Miranda is a migrant worker. He sleeps outside of the Farm Workers Center, like at-least one-hundred other people, and he waits for work in the...

RICHMOND, Va. — Bruce Jamerson, who served as clerk of the Virginia House of Delegates for 20 years, died Sunday. He was 53. Virginia State Police said officers found Jamerson’s body around 2:30 a.m. Monday along a walking path beside the James River in Powhatan County hours before House members were to reconvene a special legislative session on redistricting. Medical examiner spokesman Steve Murman says Jamerson died of a gunshot wound to the head and his death was ruled a suicide. State Police were called to search for Jamerson shortly before midnight on Sunday after his car was found parked...

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT)- Police say a drunk teen driver was going the wrong way on the Powhite Parkway and hit another car. The accident happened just before 2:30 Saturday morning in the southbound lanes of the Powhite near the Reams Rd. overpass. Several people called 911 about a SUV driving the wrong way on the Powhite. A source tells me a police cruiser was nearly hit by the alleged drunk 17-year-old driver while looking for the vehicle. Unfortunately they were too late. From the looks of the wreckage, you would think emergency responders used the jaws of life to get...

Levi's sent me an email ad for their new Waterless jeans that are produced without water. I thought, well that sounds a) stupid and b) like a great way to transfer indigo dye to everything you sit on. Nothing like blue buttcheek prints on the couch! As I read their information, my tinfoil hat jumped out of my desk drawer and onto my head I thought that this looks like the next big fear coming down the alarmism river. (Which will dry up!!!!!!!) If I remember 8th grade science correctly, (I went to public schools, so there's no guarantee of...

AN ANGEL IN THE POST OFFICE Date: 2007-11-23, 10:55PM MST This is one of the kindest things I've ever experienced. I have no way to know who sent it, but there is a kind soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service. Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her...
