KYIV, June 16/Ukrinform/. Around 15,000-20,000 armed militants are currently operating in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and more than half of them arrived from Russia. Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Secretary Andriy Parubiy said this at a briefing at Ukrinform on Monday. According to Parubiy, there are natives of the Caucasus and special units of the Russian Armed Forces are among the militants.

The U.S. Air Force has sent its most advanced bomber to Europe for the first time, amid the still-festering Ukraine crisis. Two B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, the most sophisticated warplanes ever employed in combat by the U.S., will be based for a "short-term deployment" at Fairford, a Royal Air Force base in England 90 miles (150 km) west of London -- just three hours flight away from the Russian border.

Russian companies will make bypassing the U.S. dollar in international transactions a top priority, the heads of three Russian banks said this week, in the latest sign that Russia is turning its back on the West and moving toward Asia. Sanctions imposed by the U.S. and European Union after Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in March have spurred Western banks to drastically reduce their lending activity in Russia in recent months. Concerned the Russian economy was too reliant on the U.S. dollar and therefore vulnerable to Western political opprobrium, Russian politicians have called for a "de-dollarization" of their economy, underpinning...

The Ukrainian government accused Russia of sending "terrorists" across its border on Tuesday after border guards clashed with armed men in the east of the country overnight. The foreign ministry in Kiev said it was protesting over Moscow's failure to take action against a concentration of up to 40 truckloads of armed men. The border guard service said it believed some of these had succeeding in crossing the frontier near Astakhovo, in Luhansk region, about 150 km from Donetsk. With most votes counted, presumptive President-elect Petro Porshenko gave his first post-election press conference on May 26 - with Kyiv Mayor-elect Vitali Klitschko at his side - and talked about the need to intensify Ukraine's anti-terrorist operation against seperatists in the east while talking peace with Russia at the same time. The billionaire oligarch who has taken all political sides since Ukraine's independence outlined two priorities: restoring peace after months of Kremlin-backed war and restoring economic growth after months of recession. Despite expressing a willingness to talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin and seek a peaceful resolution to the Kremlin-instigated...

Can China's new Type 052D Luyang III destroyers successfully see through the stealth of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter? Maybe. U.K., Chinese and Russian media report the radar on China's new destroyer could track and engage the F-35; however it is not clear if such claims have any validity. Konstantin Sivkov, director of the Russian Academy for Geopolitical Issues, asserted that the destroyer's active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar system can detect, track and launch weapons against the F-35 at a range of 350 kilometers or about 189 nautical miles, according to a Voice of Russia...

A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander reportedly made a revealing remark last week, saying Syrian President Bashar Assad is "fighting this war (in Syria) as our deputy." The comment, made by Brig. Gen. Hossein Hamedani, clearly implies that Iran is orchestrating what happens in Syria. Hamedani further said 130,000 Iranian fighters are "ready to be deployed" in Syria if the war rages on. Hamedani's statements were reported by the Iranian state-controlled Fars News last Sunday, but were quickly removed from the website. Naame Shaam, an independent news site opposing Assad's regime, revealed the deleted report last Thursday.

In the Persian Gulf there are rumors that one of Iran's Ghadir mini-subs sank while practicing tactics for attacking an American Nimitz class carrier. It was believed that a recently built two-thirds replica of an American Nimitz class aircraft carrier would be towed out so the Ghadir could get some experience in how to approach such a large ship and launch torpedoes at it. The rumored loss of a Ghadir was accompanied by talk of some new stealth technology on the Ghadir. That is probably just rumor as the small size of the Ghadir already confers a substantial amount of...

United Nations agricultural experts are reporting confusion, after figures show that China imported 2.6 million tons of rice in 2012, substantially more than a four-fold increase over the 575,000 tons imported in 2011. The confusion stems from the fact that there is no obvious reason for vastly increased imports, since there has been no rice shortage in China. The speculation is that Chinese importers are taking advantage of low international prices, but all that means is that China's own vast supplies of domestically grown rice are being stockpiled. Why would China suddenly be stockpiling millions of tons of rice for...

Syria and Iran have threatened to retaliate for an Israeli air raid near the capital Damascus. Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul-Karim Ali said Damascus has "the option and the surprise to retaliate." He said he cannot predict when the retaliation will be, saying it is up to relevant authorities to prepare for it. In Iran, the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian on Thursday as saying the raid on Syria will have significant implications for the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

BRUSSELS, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Several Scud missiles fired at rebels by Syria have landed "fairly close" to the Turkish border, NATO's top military commander said on Friday in a blog explaining why Patriot anti-missile batteries are being deployed to Turkey. The comments by U.S. Admiral James Stavridis, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, were the first to confirm that Scuds have come down near the border of Turkey, a NATO member state. Stavridis also described the situation in Syria as "chaotic and dangerous".

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress that it intends to sell Israel some 6,900 tail kits which can turn "dumb" bombs into satellite-guided "smart bombs," including bombs capable of penetrating hardened targets, Bloomberg Business Week reported. Some of the hardened targets one would immediately think about are those underground nuclear plants the Iranian government has been so chatty about this past decade or so. According to BBW, the sale will includes 1,725 all-weather satellite-guided Joint Direct Attack Munition, or JDAM tail kits with BLU-109 bombs, which are 2,000-pound, hard-target penetrators. Bombs delivered this way are among the most...

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood government is set to receive more tanks and fighter jets from the U.S. These include 200 M1A1 Abrams battle tanks and "a squadron of F-16 Falcon" fighters. Besides the obvious problems associated with sending weaponry to a government run by the Muslim Brotherhood, one must also consider the precarious position the U.S. will find itself in should war break out between Israel and Egypt. This concern becomes paramount when one considers how the billions in aide provided annually by the U.S. have enabled Egypt to develop "far and away the largest army in Africa." Egypt is also...

IDF Special Forces are operating inside Syria to track chemical weapons, the London Sunday Times reported. The Israeli government has not commented on the report. The report from London comes hours after Syrian opposition forces released a video showing that Syrian President Bashar Assad has used chemical weapons in the commercial center of Aleppo. The newspaper stated that the IDF operations across the border are part of new secret operations to locate non-conventional weapons and to sabotage them to prevent their use.
