• What Is the Meaning of “Corban”?

“In Mark 7:11-12 Christ condemns the Pharisees for rejecting the commandment of God by their tradition. What specifically were the Pharisees teaching in these two verses? What is Corban?” In order to understand the situation under consideration, the entire context must be viewed. It reads as follows. And there are gathered together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, and had seen that some of his disciples ate their bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands diligently, do not eat, holding...
• What Is a Good Credit Score? The Number You Need to Buy a Home

No number is more important to prospective home buyers than their credit score. Put simply, these three digits are a numerical representation of your track record paying off your debts, from credit cards to college loans. If you’ve applied for a mortgage to buy a home, lenders check your credit score. If it’s high, getting a mortgage will be a breeze; if it’s low, you may struggle. So now that we’ve got your attention, the question remains: Exactly what is a good credit score? Here’s the deal: A perfect credit score is 850. But all scores 760 and above are...

WEEK News 25 in Peoria reports that the Peoria International Airport was partially evacuated due to a bomb threat, and officials have a woman in custody. TSA officials say a woman attempted to check a package at the American Airlines counter at about 6:30 p.m.. Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy told 1470 WMBD that the package contained dynamite, a timer and bottles of fluid, which were found during a routine scan by TSA officials. The scan was confirmed when authorities opened the package using a robot. The woman is being questioned by authorities. Flights were delayed at the airport for...
• Illinois lawmakers want to add places where people can carry concealed guns

03/08/2016 11:43:39 AM PST · by Graybeard58 · 12 replies
Illinois legislators from both parties are continuing to fine-tune the state's concealed carry law nearly three years after it was passed. Legislators have proposed including public transportation, courthouses, interstate highway rest areas, public parks and athletic facilities as areas in which permit holders are allowed to carry a concealed weapon, the State Journal-Register reported. In July 2013, Illinois became the last state to pass a concealed carry law. Since then, there have been some changes to the law, but none regarding the areas where concealed carry is allowed. "It's a work in progress in terms of making sure our Second...
• Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; Interior Trunk Release

Federal Register ^ | 10/20/2000 | A Rule by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
This document establishes new Federal motor vehicle safety standard (FMVSS) No. 401; Internal trunk release, that requires all new passenger cars with trunks be equipped with a release latch inside the trunk compartment beginning September 1, 2001. Instead of a release latch, this document also permits the installation of an alternative system such as a passive trunk release system which would detect the presence of a human in the trunk and would automatically unlatch the trunk lid. During the summer of 1998, eleven children died when they inadvertently trapped themselves in the trunk of a car. This new standard will...
• 'Driving while gay'? Proposal would have Missouri cops try to gather that info, too

St. Louis Post Dispatch ^ | 1/6/16 | Kevin McDermott
For the past 15 years, police officers in Missouri have been required to record the ethnicity of drivers they stop on the roads, so the information can be examined for evidence of racial profiling. Reams of data now indicate that “driving while black” is a real offense in the eyes of some Missouri officers and departments. But “driving while gay”? New state legislation unveiled Tuesday would expand the current process of data collection that police officers in Missouri are required to follow during traffic stops to include not just race, but also “perceived” sexual orientation, as well as religion, “disability”...
• Trump, Carson have months to decide on third-party runs

Donald Trump and Ben Carson could dangle the possibility of independent runs for president well into the primary season next year, but they can't wait forever.

State filing deadlines would give the two Republicans until about March to launch independent or third-party campaigns, experts said. That would give a well-financed campaign enough time to gather sufficient signatures on petitions so the candidate could appear on the ballot in every state.

• This Christian University Just Won the Right to Ban Gay Students

The LGBT movement has achieved many notable victories this year, securing marriage equality, major attacks on conversion therapy and more. But one Christian university just demonstrated why activists and allies must not become complacent: Carson-Newman University, a private Southern Baptist college in Tennessee, is now legally allowed to ban students whose "lifestyles" are interpreted as an affront to their Christian philosophy: gay students and others included. These "strengthened" rights include not only the ability to ban gay students, but also unwed mothers, women who've had abortions and even pregnant students, according to WVLT. And Carson-Newman is hardly the only college...

BENTON -- A 7-year-old testified Monday in Scott County Circuit Court she remembered her father tricking her into a sexual act when she was 2 years old. "I'm talking about Travis, yucky stuff," the victim told the prosecutor. Travis Sintell Turner, 34, of Cape Girardeau is on trial, facing three charges of felony statutory sodomy. The victim's mother testified the molestation occurred in February 2011, when Turner was alone with two children in the 700 block of Second Street in Scott City while the victim's mother was at work. The victim told her mother about the incident on June 30,...
• I Was a Nielsen Family... and Boy, Was I Sorry!

A few years ago I had the chance to be a Nielsen “family” (though I live alone) and catalog, for all posterity, a detailed record of my TV viewing habits. Eventually—I assumed— this raw data would be processed and reported to the masses, with my viewing choices powerfully impacting the national viewing audience. Tough work, but someone’s got to do it. Though you can apply to the Nielsen company to be “sampled”, I did not. A letter just arrived out of the blue one day in my mailbox. It asked me if I would participate in their TV watching/ratings survey...

It had all the makings of A Moment. On the eve of the second Republican presidential debate, set to take place Wednesday at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., GOP frontrunner Donald Trump boarded the mighty USS Iowa battleship in the Port of Los Angeles to deliver what his campaign billed as a “major national security speech.” Directly behind Trump, tilted upward toward the pinkish Southern California sky, stood a trio of 66-foot-long Mark 7 naval guns. Directly to Trump’s right, across the main channel of the Port of Los Angeles, stood four 300-foot-tall shipping cranes. Finally the time...
• Pope to allow all priests to forgive abortion during Holy Year

Pope Francis will give all priests discretion during the Roman Catholic Church's upcoming Holy Year to formally forgive women who have had abortions, in the Argentine pontiff's latest move towards a more open and inclusive church. In Church teaching, abortion is such a grave sin that those who procure or perform it incur an automatic excommunication. Usually only designated clergy and missionaries can formally forgive abortions. But from Dec.8 to Nov. 26, during an extraordinary Holy Year or "Jubilee" on the theme of mercy announced by Pope Francis in March, all priests will be able to do so, he said...

So simple, I'm almost embarrassed to ask it. I've had a certain credit card for 18 months, it pays 01.5% cash back on all purchases. I just looked on line at my statement and I have accumulated $852.13 so far. My question is, how much total have I charged to accumulate that amount of "cash back"? I know that 01.5% of "X" = 852.13, I've simply forgotten how to do this probably 5th. or 6th. grade math. Thanks.

WASHINGTON (BP) -- Pope Francis' proposals to remedy climate change will likely harm those he most wants to help, according to a Baptist seminary president and an evangelical spokesman. The pope issued the Vatican's first encyclical on environmental issues -- "May You Be Praised (Laudato Si'): On Care for Our Common Home" -- in mid-June, prompting widespread praise from those who stress manmade causes of global warming. Others, including R. Albert Mohler Jr. of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and E. Calvin Beisner of the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation found shortcomings in the letter -- especially regarding the...

NASHVILLE (BP) -- It's common for proponents of gay marriage to claim that Scripture condemns only promiscuous, predatory and pedophilic homosexual behavior, as if the biblical authors had no knowledge of consensual, adult, monogamous homosexuality. In some cases, LGBT advocates state explicitly that the ancient world was ignorant of modern forms of homosexuality. But that claim is false. And believers should be prepared to engage its advocates in the ongoing cultural debate over same-sex marriage. The suggestion that Scripture doesn't condemn modern homosexuality is one component of the controversy surrounding Weatherly Heights Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala., and its alleged...

ROGERS, Texas (BP) -- We live in a world where the truths we have always known and relied upon are being cast aside in favor of new paradigms, most of which are not for the better. Christians are being forced to scatter their attention and fight the culture war on many fronts. The battle for the biblical definition of marriage is certainly worth our fight. But it is, by no means, the only front in this culture war. We still need to confront the legally sanctioned atrocities of abortion. People may believe they have "bigger fish to fry," to use...
