    Omaha World Herald ^ | MAY 20, 2015 | Maggie O'Brien,
An Omaha police officer and a suspect involved in a shootout Wednesday have died. Kerrie Orozco, 29, a gang unit officer, was serving a warrant on the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force when she was shot. Orozco is the 25th officer – and first female – in the department killed in the line of duty. Orozco had been taken to Creighton University Medical Center in extremely critical condition after being shot about 1 p.m. near Read Street and Martin Avenue.

Before his July 30 release from prison, Nikko Jenkins reportedly had promised his fellow inmates that the world would soon take notice of his exploits. And he made another promise to them — that he would never return. Now authorities are trying to determine whether Jenkins attempted to make good on those boasts. As The World-Herald first reported Friday, Omaha police and Douglas County sheriff's detectives are investigating whether Jenkins, 26, was involved in three sets of killings in August that occurred over a 10-day span: » The Aug. 21 slaying of Andrea Kruger, 33. » The Aug. 19 killing...

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed a director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, ending a nearly two-year standoff in Congress and putting the new agency on sounder legal footing. Democrats overcame long-held Republican objections to approve Richard Cordray's nomination to head the bureau, which was created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law. Bureau advocates and consumer law experts said Senate confirmation clears up a number of questions, including Cordray's legal status as the temporary bureau director and the agency's authority to oversee certain financial sectors such as debt collection.

In a development that could chill the dedication of every soldier in the field, the U.S. government has refused to deny reports by the government of Afghanistan that NATO has agreed to have the soldiers who burned copies of the Quran face trial. Last week, Afghan president Hamid Karzai demanded NATO turn over the U.S. troops to be tried in Afghanistan. President Obama subsequently sent a letter to Karzai reassuring him that the troops involved would be punished for their actions. Part of the three-page letter to Karzai said, “I extend to you and the Afghan people my sincere apologies....

Remember what Alan Simpson said after Obama’s disastrous, demagogic, compromise-destroying attack on Paul Ryan a few weeks ago? He knew he’d just seen any chance of a deal between the Republican and Democratic leaderships go up in smoke. Quote: “Just pray for the Gang of Six,” he said. “You guys your age, keep praying.” What happens if the Gang of Six fails? Mr. Simpson was asked. “Guys like you will be picking grit with the chickens when you are 65,” he replied. Start boning up on grit-picking, my friends:

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is set to introduce a bill Monday night to fund the military through September and fund government operations for one more week, Republican sources tell The Hill. Boehner's move is intended to prevent a government shutdown that would start after Friday without another measure to fund the government. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) said the GOP was trying to prevent a government shutdown "at all costs." “We’re serious about trying to prevent a government shutdown. In the suburbs of Silicon Valley, not far away from San Francisco Bay, there are apparently particular days for patriotism, at least according to one high school in Morgan Hill. On Cinco de Mayo, several students decided to wear clothing with American flag designs to make a statement about their own views on heritage — including one Hispanic student. Teachers demanded that they either turn their shirts inside out and remove all other American flag-themed clothing or face suspension for “defiance.” Their parents are outraged:

The Walgreens customer who killed a would-be-robber Monday night has been cited for carrying a concealed weapon but won't face a charge in the shooting. Harry J. McCullough III, 32, had a permit to carry a loaded handgun in plain view — typically in a holster — but did not have a concealed weapons permit, said Omaha Police Officer Jacob Bettin. McCullough pulled his handgun from the waistband of his pants when he shot and killed Marquail Thomas, a shotgun-wielding 18-year-old and would-be-robber at the Walgreens in Benson Monday night, Bettin said. Maybe she thought that if she waited to make the announcement, she'd reconsider. Or maybe she wanted her July 4 weekend to relax without having to worry about throwing such a curve ball on Monday...

Bush Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson just wrapped up his press conference announcing the Mother of All Bailouts. He said a “bold” approach was needed to achieve “stability” in the market. Let me translate that. “Bold” = Massively massive, taxpayer-funded rescue. “Stability” = Privatizing profits and socializing losses on a scale we have never seen before in our lifetimes. I have had it with Pollyanna conservatives who continue to parrot the “fundamentals of the market are great!” line. The fundamentals of the market suck. The fundamentals of capitalism have been sabotaged.

Robert Nelson, columnist for the Omaha World Herald did a stunning job of going out of his his way to trash a lot of good people in the state of Nebraska. The OWH does not web link the opinion columns so here is the text: Gun bill shot down in blaze of ignorance Wow. Talk about power. The NRA now runs the Nebraska Legislature even when it’s not trying to run it. On Friday, a severely watereddown bill intended to address gun violence failed to win a majority vote in second-round debate.

It was jarring. I 'd had gotten a heads up from some talk radio hosts, read some blog posts and saw a reference or two in newspaper campaign stories on this loose cannon Reverend Jeremiah Wright. I was thinking to myself that a Chicago pol like Obama would have some circus characters along for the ride. Then I saw the video of samples of his "sermons". There will be reams of spot on condemnation, analysis and guilty white men apologist justifications generated in the coming days. Masters of the spoken and written word from my side of the political/moral isle...

Free Republic further underscores it's relevancy as a powerhouse political center of gravity with server crashing traffic tonight. The press, pundits, lurkers and Freeps buried the robust Free Republic data center with page requests resulting in server error results and long page request waits. ..YEAH BABY

Senator Lott--"Senator Kennedy, I appreciate the legislative leadership you have been providing. I know it is not easy, you know, and your own colleagues and those of us over here have been beating you up. I mean, your a nice poster child. Thank you very much for what you do. But I'll tell you one thing I have learned the hard way. When it comes to legislating, when you are dealing with Senator Kennedy, you had better bring your lunch, because you are going to get educated, you are going to learn a lot, and you are going to get...

The White House is in search of inspiring rhetoric as the clock ticks and national support for the war effort wanes. I would recommend that President Bush dispense with the usual, inane State of the Union laundry lists worked up by his tired Beltway speechwriting crew and just read 2LT Mark Daily's last MySpace post to the nation instead.(note--hatfieldmccoy--this is from January 19th, it's still a correct evaluation AFTER the speech)

Hugh Hewitt--Lt. Mark Daily was killed in Iraq on Monday. Though I did not know him, we have many friends in common, one of whom sent me the post that Lt. Daily had put at his MySpace page. Lt. Daily was a graduate of UCLA and Woodbridge High School in Irvine, California. He was named ROTC's outstanding cadet in his region for 2005, and a Distinguished Military Graduate. He is survived by his wife Janet, his mother and father, Linda and John, and three siblings, Christine, Eric and Nicole. Here is Lt. Daily's post:

One man has died and at least 14 people were injured when a Fremont man purposefully drove his sport-utility vehicle onto sidewalks and crosswalks in San Francisco and Fremont today, according to San Francisco police. The victims appear to include a Fremont man, a 78-year-old man who was using a cane to cross the street when he was struck, and a woman in her 70s. Earlier reports that a child was injured was incorrect.

Obama Warns of Gas Guzzling Cars in Town Hall Meeting -- Leaves In SUV-This page temporarily unavailable Went directly to the site-- the story has been pulled. Management got a "advisory call" from Screaming Dean and the Rev. Al Enforcers. The best part is this story was also yanked from http://www.greencarcongress.com. This same story is referenced by Google with the same date and title but not on the site.
