Let nobody tell you that the second decade of the 21st century has been a bad time. We are living through the greatest improvement in human living standards in history. Extreme poverty has fallen below 10 per cent of the world’s population for the first time. It was 60 per cent when I was born. Global inequality has been plunging as Africa and Asia experience faster economic growth than Europe and North America; child mortality has fallen to record low levels; famine virtually went extinct; malaria, polio and heart disease are all in decline.

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton stood by her record on the debate stage Sunday, saying that 400 pieces of legislation had her name on it. Only three pieces of legislation sponsored by Clinton, however, actually became law. “400 pieces of legislation have my name on them as a sponsor or cosponsor when I was a senator for eight years. I worked very hard and was proud to be reelected by a bigger margin than I was elected the first time,” Clinton began. “I will take that work as president in finding common ground. You have to get along with people to...
  • Did Rush caller just show Obama immigration plan's fatal flaw?

A caller to the Rush Limbaugh show just pointed out the fatal flaw in the Obama immigration plan: Any illegal alien who signs up for a work permit, pays their fines/taxes, etc will automatically become a part of a data base that could be used to find them when the regime changes as it assuredly will someday. Since Obama's Executive Order does not carry the force of law and is not permanent, this list could then be used to find the illegal immigrants and depost them. Therefore no one will sign up for Obamas' work permit program.

The battle of San Jacinto was the concluding military event of the Texas Revolution. On March 13, 1836, the revolutionary army at Gonzales began to retreat eastward. One of the eight inscriptions on the exterior base of the San Jacinto Monument reads: "Measured by its results, San Jacinto was one of the decisive battles of the world. The freedom of Texas from Mexico won here led to annexation and to the Mexican War, resulting in the acquisition by the United States of the states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma....

Did the Aspen know about Schiller's problems when they agreed to hire him? I noticed that the web cam date for the O'Keefe video at the restaurant was shot on 2-22-11 and that the Aspen Institute's announcement of Schiller's move from NPR was dated 3-3-11. So was the Aspen Institute aware of the video when they hired him? And if they were, does the Aspen Institute endorse Schiller's point of view regarding Conservatives, Tea Party members, Jews, and so on?

SYDNEY -- Tennis great Chris Evert has joined the chorus of complaints about the noise level in women's tennis, saying the "grunting" was getting out of hand. Evert stopped short of joining former rival Martina Navratilova in labelling the practice as cheating, but agreed it had reached unacceptable levels. Evert: "Grunting is one thing but the shrill sound that you hear with players nowadays, and especially they get louder when they hit a winner, that's the thing that I observe as a player," the former world No. 1 told reporters in Sydney on Monday. "It comes before they hit the...

Iraq power shortages spur black market By RAVI NESSMAN Associated Press Writer When truck driver Said Abdul-Wahab al-Obeidi needed to find a new career after the roads of Iraq grew too dangerous, he looked for a business with a bright future. So he sold his rig, bought a massive generator and set up his own electric company. With Baghdad's electricity network in tatters after years of corruption, neglect and attacks, a thriving black market in power has sprung up across the capital. In nearly every neighborhood, multicolored bundles of wires flow from private generators that have all but replaced the...
