MTV Networks announced Thursday that its chairman and chief executive, Judy McGrath, was resigning. The surprising change at the top comes at a time when MTV is riding a surge in both ratings for its programs and profits for its parent company, Viacom. Viacom said Ms. McGrath had decided it was a perfect time to leave to pursue other ventures, although those ventures were not named. She leaves at time when the company has ascended to a new peak of success, with programs like “Jersey Shore” and “Teen Mom” on MTV, “SpongeBob SquarePants” on Nickelodeon, and Jon Stewart and Stephen...

Many Indians abort unwanted girls BOMBAY Stockbroker Amandeep Singh had a booming business in Bombay and seemed a happy man when he learned that his wife, Seema, had finally become pregnant 10 years after they married. The childless north Indian couple went to a temple and prayed to the Hindu god Ganesh to bless them with a healthy son. But then, a secret ultrasound test showed the baby growing in Mrs. Singh's womb was a girl. "We want to have a small family with only one child, and we don't want it to be a girl," Mrs. Singh told a...

The following excerpts have been taken from an Interview with Richard Clarke, conducted by PBS Frontline on March 20, 2002. He was not speaking for the Administration. The Context of the interview, was a memorial to FBI Counterterrorist expert John O'Neill, who had tragically left the FBI to take a private sector job at the World Trade Center. What did he (John O'Neill) understand that nobody else understood? I think he understood, first of all, that Al Qaeda wasn't a nuisance -- that what Al Qaeda said in its documents and bin Laden's speeches was the truth. He said to...

40 Million Angels On this, the day that marks thirty years since Roe vs. Wade, we would like to pause and reflect on the teachers, scholars, doctors, lawyers, carpenters, plumbers, writers, singers, dancers, nurses, accountants, artists, architects, clerks, machinists, cops, soldiers, sailors, researchers, scientists - pick any profession or way of life. They died before they got there. They died for our "freedom." They died so that we can all be "equal." Forty-million souls....what a dear, dear price to pay. Lucianne Goldberg Mother

f> Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has agreed to sell his memoirs to a New York-based publisher for a seven-figure advance, according to publishing industry sources. The deal between the 54-year-old justice and HarperCollins, which is owned by conservative media baron Rupert Murdoch, appears to be the most lucrative ever for a sitting member of the modern Supreme Court. Patty Kelly, a spokeswoman for HarperCollins, said Thomas's book would "trace his life from his upbringing through his confirmation to the court" in 1991 -- including the battle over sexual harassment charges by a former aide, Anita Hill, about which she...

The New Jersey Democratic party's claim that it can anoint a new candidate, based on the political calculation that incumbent Robert Torricelli will probably lose, appears to be baseless. Although news reports have not specified what parts of the law the Democrats are citing, New Jersey statutes are available on the Internet. Let's start with the basic statute on vacancy (NJ Statute 19:13-20): In the event of a vacancy, howsoever caused, among candidates nominated at primaries, which vacancy shall occur not later than the 51st day before the general election, or in the event of inability to select a...

Homeschool killings By CAROLYNN BRIGHT, IR Staff Writer - 08/29/02 Officials try to squelch attempts to explain murder of 2 children. As officials investigating the alleged murder of two Augusta youths by their mother earlier this week clamp down on details of the case, area residents have developed their own explanations for the tragedy. Some newspaper reports quote sources who point accusatory fingers at the anti-depressant Paxil — a drug Jeanette Swanson’s mother said her daughter started taking only weeks before she called 911 stating that she shot her 10-year-old daughter Louisa, and her 14-year-old son, Swen. Other conjecture...

It's mostly forgotten now, but on Sept. 10, George W. Bush was in big trouble, says From, head of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council that launched Bill Clinton into national politics. His tax cut was pilloried as a payoff to the rich, environmentalists were on his case, the red-hot Clinton economy had gone cold, and nine months in the White House hadn't cured Bush's losing struggle with syntax.

If independent counsel Robert Ray really had the goods on criminal activity by former President Bill Clinton but decided not to bring charges, he himself might have been liable to an accusation of misfeasance in office.

Ray, of course, has nothing to worry about because this claim, made in a final report by the Clinton prosecution team, is beyond belief. There is every reason to suspect that Ray didn't bring charges because he had nothing that would convince a jury of Clinton's supposed guilt, just as Ray's predecessor and mentor, Kenneth Starr, was unable to come up with anything to bring a guilty verdict against Clinton in the Senate.

Reporting innuendo by James Bowman The New Criterion home page What do you think? Is the Bush administration “hiding something or lying” about what it knows about the bankruptcy of the Enron Corporation? Or are you, perhaps, the sort of sucker who just accepts things on trust and believes everything that government officials tell you? Maybe, like Roy Marshall, a fifty-eight-year-old air-conditioning salesman from Albany, you think that “the Bush administration knows more than they’re telling.” But then, also like Roy, you are smart enough to realize that “all politicians do that.” Tell me about it! So ...
