There were many times during the American Revolution that the Patriots thought they were going to lose the war. George Washington wanted the troops to know that in the most difficult times their characters are tested the most. Washington was so inspired by Thomas Paines words in his pamphlet called Common Sense that he often read it to his men. One such line he read to them was this. These are the times that try mens souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in the crisis, shrink from the service of their country. When times got tough and morale was low many soldiers turned and ran. Thank goodness the true patriots kept fighting even when they thought all was lost.
