In a letter to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus last week, five Democratic senators urged him "to increase smoke-free areas on bases" and give sailors more access to programs to stop smoking. "We urge you to do everything in your capacity to address this issue for our military men and women, including moving forward with the proposal to stop the sale of tobacco aboard all naval bases and ships," said the letter from Sens. On Wednesday, Panetta laid out a grim list of spending cuts the Pentagon will have to make in the coming weeks that he said will seriously damage the country's economy and degrade the military's ability to respond to a crisis. Criticizing members of Congress as irresponsible, Panetta said lawmakers are willing to push the country off a fiscal cliff to damage their political opponents. If Congress doesn't pass a budget, Panetta said, the Pentagon will have to absorb $46 billion in spending reductions in this fiscal year and will face a $35 billion shortfall in operating expenses. Wyoming and Missouri are holding conventions before April 24th where Romney may pick up some delegates but even winning all of them wouldn't bring him much closer to the magic number. I'm backing Newt and hoping for a brokered convention, where Romney's lead in the polls will mean NOTHING. The remaining candidates plead their cases to the convention, and as we've seen, Newt SLAUGHTERS everyone in a debate. And it's more than that. I've never been a big fan of Newt's, but he's done one thing better than anyone else; he ATTACKS AND THE ATTACKS STICK. And when the opposition attacks, he blocks the shot and unloads even harder. THAT is what it's going to take to beat Obama. Anything less, and we can kiss our country and our asses goodbye.
