  • Minnesota writer offers a new ‘Confession’

‘Confession’ David Weiss By David R. Weiss St. Paul, Minn. I am impatient with confession. That’s putting it too politely, but the moment I try to state the matter more clearly it just gets messy: I do not enjoy starting my worship experience by reminding myself (and everyone else) that I am sinful. Well, doesn’t that sound a little suspicious? Isn’t the whole point of confession that we ought to come before God by first acknowledging — confessing — the deepest and most vulnerable truth about ourselves? And doesn’t my discomfort with that merely prove its importance … and reveal...

Resolved, That the LCMS join with the ILC in declaring “our resolve to approach those with homosexual inclinations with the deepest possible Christian love and pastoral concern, in whatever situation they may be living” (“Same-Gender Relationships,” 2010 CW, p. 66); and be it further Resolved, That the LCMS recognize that “Our Lord’s intentional outreach to those who were marginalized and excluded during His earthly ministry is a reminder that the Scriptural judgments against homosexual behavior must not become the cause for hatred, violence, or an unwillingness to extend the Gospel’s promises of forgiveness and reconciliation to the homosexual or any...

So I recently returned from a week at Camp Luther. Every year on this "working" vacation I tend to indulge all manner of summertime daydreams, and this year it was all about being a writer. So I bought a few magazines geared toward professional writers. It's all intriguing stuff, but I inevitably come across reminders of why I didn't go down this path in the first place-- I don't belong. Here is an example from "Poets and Writers" magazine, in a section calling for submissions to various writing contests. I'm not making this up. It is on page 75 of...

I'm not ready to break out the tinfoil...yet. But an early morning phone call to my church from someone purporting to be a Census worker has me wondering. The alleged Census worker, after verifying the address, said that she had some questions for a "community health survey" about the employees' health insurance. That certainly does not sound like the purpose for the Census listed in the Constitution!

Presbyterian leaders approve gay clergy policy The change needs approval from a majority of the church's regional presbyteries to take effect. By PATRICK CONDON Associated Press Updated: 07/08/2010 06:31:58 PM EDT MINNEAPOLIS -- Leaders of the Presbyterian church have voted to allow non-celibate gays in committed relationships to serve as clergy. Thursday's vote isn't a final stamp of approval for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) or its more than 2 million members. But it's a step that could make the church one of the most gay-friendly major Christian denominations in the country. Delegates voted during the church's general assembly in Minneapolis,...

Lutheran Bishop Joins Faith Leaders to Challenge G-8 and G-20 10-180-JD WASHINGTON (ELCA) -- The convening and working together of interfaith leaders serves as a "powerful symbol" in contributing to a better future for the world, according to the Rev. Jon V. Anderson, bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Southwestern Minnesota Synod, Redwood Falls. Anderson attended the World Religions Summit in Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 21-23. "I wanted to bring our distinctive Lutheran voice to this gathering of Christians and people of many faiths," Anderson said. More than 90 faith leaders and youth delegates from over 20 countries met at...
  • Does Being and Remaining Lutheran Still Matter?

American Lutheran Publicity Bureau ^ | 25 June AD 2010 | Rev. Paul T. McCain
Today is the 480th anniversary of the presentation of the Augsburg Confession, in 1530. It is also the 430th anniversary of the publication of the Book of Concord, in 1580. Both events are special days in the history of the Lutheran Church. These documents define what it means to be, and to remain, a Lutheran. Are the historical relics of the past, or the living confession of Christians today who call themselves Lutheran? Does being Lutheran still matter? There seem to be three types of responses to the question, "Does being Lutheran still matter?" One is, "Are you kidding me?...

By ANGIE MASON Daily Record/Sunday News Updated: 06/18/2010 11:06:35 PM EDT A graduation speech and what wasn't part of it has sparked discussion about religion and speech in the Eastern York School District community. Aaron Mackley, Eastern high school's class of 2010 president, was told to remove a part of his speech hours before the ceremony, according to a school board official and a community member. Mackley and his family could not be reached for comment...

GARMAN -- The York Dispatch Updated: 06/18/2010 11:40:39 AM EDT About a dozen people attended the Eastern York school board meeting Thursday night to find out why the senior class president was not allowed to read a poem during his commencement speech last Friday. Aaron Mackley wanted to read "The Graduate's Prayer" by Helen Seiner Rice, but was told he could not because the poem was a prayer, those residents said. Resident Sandy Ruby told the school board that it took her quite a few days to compose her thoughts. "I was...

Hanson On behalf of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and The Lutheran World Federation, organizations that are deeply engaged with and committed to the Lutheran Christians and all persons living in Palestine and Israel, I express my deep sadness regarding events surrounding the flotilla seeking to deliver humanitarian goods to Gaza. Learning the meaning of Memorial Day DAVE SHULTZ Updated: 05/28/2010 03:19:06 PM EDT How does one measure the value of freedom? I began to learn the answer to this question as a teen, and in the strangest of places. Growing up in New Freedom, I belonged to the town's drum corps. It was a given that whenever the town had an event, the drum corps would perform. Such was the case every year on the last Monday in May. We'd get into formation in the church parking lot on the edge of town, the drum corps, antique cars, the Boy...

Jonathan Eric McColley, the way he lived and the sacrifice he made to keep their country safe. But Bellizzi and Broughton - both Gettysburg natives, now staff sergeants who keep military planes in the air - remember something else about the funeral for McColley, who was killed in a helicopter crash off the coast of Africa. ELCA Worshiping Communities Intent about being Welcoming 10-142-MRC CHICAGO (ELCA) -- A group of Lutherans in Galena, Ill., worships at a local hotel. Another group in Elk River, Minn., worships at an elementary school. Although in separate locations, both groups have something in common -- they left their primary congregations to start new congregations in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Members of Central Lutheran Church in Elk River, Minn., voted earlier this year to terminate their relationship with the ELCA, but some members there sought to remain in the ELCA and have started their own worshiping community. I live in "flyover country"--one of those "red counties" that form the "T" of Pennsylvania, or, as those not so fond of my (our) politics calls it, Pennsyltucky. And I find increasingly that I am an unappreciated minority; indeed, a minority that is viewed with growing suspicion. I am a rural resident who rents a Post Office box. Thanks to the Patriot Act, every bank account must now have record of my physical street address. So must my driver's license and vehicle registration. And, this time around (unlike a decade ago) I did not receive a Census form. In fact,...

The church leaders met here April 12-13 as the Committee on Lutheran Cooperation (CLC), which meets twice a year. WHISLER Webster's New World Dictionary describes terrorism as "the act of terrorizing; use of force or threats to demoralize, intimidate, and subjugate, especially such use as a political weapon or policy." What is going on in the land of the free and the land of "In God We Trust"? ELCA Council Adopts Significant Revisions to Ministry Policies CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) adopted a series of historic and sweeping revisions to ministry policy documents April 10, the result of months of extensive writing, comment and review by hundreds of leaders and members following the 2009 Churchwide Assembly. ELCA Church Council Approves All Full- Inclusion Revisons Without Opposing Votes This weekend, the ELCA Church Council meeting in Chicago moved the decision of the 2009 Churchwide Assembly into policy by replacing the language in church documents that excluded ministers in committed same-gender relationships with a policy that allows congregations and organizations to call a fully-qualified minister in a committed, same-gender relationship. And, the Council also approved the way to reinstate ministers who have been removed from the roster because of the previous policy and to receive ELM pastors onto the roster of the ELCA. The Council also made the...
