  • Minnesota writer offers a new ‘Confession’

‘Confession’ David Weiss By David R. Weiss St. Paul, Minn. I am impatient with confession. That’s putting it too politely, but the moment I try to state the matter more clearly it just gets messy: I do not enjoy starting my worship experience by reminding myself (and everyone else) that I am sinful. Well, doesn’t that sound a little suspicious? Isn’t the whole point of confession that we ought to come before God by first acknowledging — confessing — the deepest and most vulnerable truth about ourselves? And doesn’t my discomfort with that merely prove its importance … and reveal...

So I recently returned from a week at Camp Luther. Every year on this "working" vacation I tend to indulge all manner of summertime daydreams, and this year it was all about being a writer. So I bought a few magazines geared toward professional writers. It's all intriguing stuff, but I inevitably come across reminders of why I didn't go down this path in the first place-- I don't belong. Here is an example from "Poets and Writers" magazine, in a section calling for submissions to various writing contests. I'm not making this up. It is on page 75 of...

I'm not ready to break out the tinfoil...yet. But an early morning phone call to my church from someone purporting to be a Census worker has me wondering. The alleged Census worker, after verifying the address, said that she had some questions for a "community health survey" about the employees' health insurance. That certainly does not sound like the purpose for the Census listed in the Constitution!

Presbyterian leaders approve gay clergy policy The change needs approval from a majority of the church's regional presbyteries to take effect. By PATRICK CONDON Associated Press Updated: 07/08/2010 06:31:58 PM EDT MINNEAPOLIS -- Leaders of the Presbyterian church have voted to allow non-celibate gays in committed relationships to serve as clergy. Thursday's vote isn't a final stamp of approval for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) or its more than 2 million members. But it's a step that could make the church one of the most gay-friendly major Christian denominations in the country. Delegates voted during the church's general assembly in Minneapolis,...

Today is the 480th anniversary of the presentation of the Augsburg Confession, in 1530. It is also the 430th anniversary of the publication of the Book of Concord, in 1580. Both events are special days in the history of the Lutheran Church. These documents define what it means to be, and to remain, a Lutheran. Are the historical relics of the past, or the living confession of Christians today who call themselves Lutheran? Does being Lutheran still matter? There seem to be three types of responses to the question, "Does being Lutheran still matter?" One is, "Are you kidding me?...

Don't Let The Crazies Take Over The Playground Don't underestimate the importance of cultivating healthy relationships in your organization. Leadership blogger Jon Gordon reminds us today that research has found successful marriages have a 5-1 ratio of positive interactions. Similarly, workgroups with a 3-1 ratio of positive interactions are more effective. It's not all just about being happy-bunny at work, though. Pretending that all is wonderful when it's not is no better than scowling your way through everyday, ignoring all the good stuff. From NE Ohio December newsletter - Bishop's Article: On December third we held a special meeting of the synod council, deans, committee chairs and synod staff to take a look at the projected $250,000-$400,000 deficit for fiscal year 2010-11. Since a $400,000 deficit is a jaw-dropping number to me, I wanted advice on how to carry out the ministry that we do together as a synod. The short-term solution is to reduce hours and compensation for the entire staff. Developing a long-term solution is going to take a lot more work. I have had many people who are quick to...
