The article below was found in a newspaper database that I can access through my state libary from home. I was looking for info regarding Kerry's comments about the National Guard/Reserves and came across this article pertaining to the questions being raised about Dan Quayle in the 1988 election. . New Orleans, Aug 19 - Senator Dan Quayle of Indiana is among at least a dozen members of Congress who, as young men in the Vietnam War era, joined local Reserve or National Guard units and served out military tours near their homes. Senator Bill Bradley, a New Jersey Democrat,...

I was doing a search on Google to see when Ron Kovic had been in Vietnam, and discovered that he had enlisted in the Marines in 1964 and did two tours of duty in Vietnam. I saw the movie "Fourth of July" when it first came out, and I'd like some help from fellow Freepers, to try to ascertain the facts behind his disability. If I recall correctly, the movie portrays him as having been shot in the back and paralyzed. However, I found this on a website about him:"After these experiences, Ron wanted to go home. He began stepping...

After viewing some Kerry family photos posted on two separate news websites, I've got a question I want to ask my fellow Freepers. Kerry has consistently refused to release his medical records, both personal and military. Could his records contain information that he may be suffering from some form of growth or bone disease? I know there are growth hormone diseases, among them Marfan Syndrome. Please compare the following photos: This photo was taken in 1962 and is from an online article in the Boston Globe. We know Kerry had surgery on his chin, but I can't pinpoint when that...

Morris Island will move to the top of a list of endangered Civil War battlefields today in response to plans to develop it. The national Civil War Preservation Trust does not numerically rank its priority list, but "Morris Island is at the very top," trust official Jim Campi said. The nonprofit trust, which updates its list annually, previously included the battlefield in a broader top-25 list because of tidal erosion. The barrier island between Fort Sumter and Folly Beach was the site where Citadel cadets fired one of the first shots of the war at Fort Sumter, and its Battery...

The paragraph below was found in The Right Ear section of the April 12, 1996 issue of Human Events: According to reporters Jack Anderson and Michael Binstein, Sen. John Kerry (D.-Mass.) got a little out of hand last month in fund-raising efforts for his campaign this fall against Massachusetts Gov. William Weld. Kerry on the Senate floor after a rollcall vote, reportedly grabbed Robert Asher, a lobbyist for the American Israel Political Action Committee, led him into a room and demanded more support from the group. According to the Anderson-Binstein story, Asher told Kerry, "I'm helping you," but the senator...

In 1994, John Kerry wrote a lengthy op-ed piece on Haiti, and why he believed that military invervention should be on the table. Below is the editorial in full. Read it and laugh along with me as Kerry brags repeatedly of our military success in Desert Storm and appears to almost take credit for that success. But a bit of warning. You may want to have a barf bag handy because the hypocrisy may cause you to hurl your guts out. "Haiti’s military rulers continue to thumb their noses at the United States and the rest of the world. Since...

The 1970 article claims that Kerry spoke out again American foreign policy as class orator at the 1966 Yale graduation exercises. Does anyone know where a copy of this oration can be viewed or obtained?

CHESTER, ILL.--Before Popeye the Sailor, Olive Oyl and Wimpy were the stars of a beloved comic strip, they walked the streets of this little town where their creator grew up. Popeye's real-life alter ego, according to locals, was Frank Fiegel, a one-eyed, pipe-smoking man with a penchant for fistfights. Dora Paskel was unusually tall and thin and wore a bun at the nape of her neck. And theater owner J. William Schuchert so loved hamburgers that he would send his employees out between performances to buy them. Popeye made his debut in the funny pages 75 years ago, walking onto...

Senator Chuck Schumer was scheduled to attend a 2:30 P.M. summit in Fulton, New York this afternoon, but instead cancelled his appearance to hold a live press conference to bash the Bush White House. The summit had been set to discuss the re-opening of the Nestle Chocolate Factory in Fulton, New York, which closed this past May and took with it over 450 jobs. Public officials from all over the state were scheduled to attend in an attempt to work out a plan to re-open the factory and replace the jobs previously lost. There are two chocolate manufacturers interested in...

Can anybody help me? I've been trying to locate a story I found about Chris Dodd and Ted Kennedy a while back. The online database that I originally discovered the article on doesn't exist anymore, and the searches I've done on what databases are available to me don't show anything. I wish I could remember who the President was at the time this incident took place. Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd were drunk (what else is new?). They needed to get a flight to attend someone's funeral and contacted the President (I believe it was the President or one of...

I did a search for the following article and didn't find it previously listed: Some Folly Road business owners concerned about crime were taken aback Thursday night when Charleston Police Chief Reuben Greenberg appeared to suggest that an effective crime deterrent would be for them to arm themselves. Others nodded in agreement. About two dozen frustrated James Island business owners met with Greenberg and several Charleston police officers and Charleston County sheriff's deputies to discuss protection against a rash of robberies and burglaries along a stretch of Folly Road. Greenberg told them that robberies, burglaries and rapes are a fact...

AUBURN, NEW YORK At least five more corrections officers were attacked by inmates Wednesday in the second day of Auburn Correctional Facility's lockdown, while local representatives questioned allegations made by state union officials Tuesday that an officer was bitten by an HIV-infected inmate and that prison officials were slow to respond to signs of mounting violence. State Department of Correctional Services Spokesman James Flateau said Wednesday five officers were attacked in two incidents as a cell-by-cell search for weapons, drugs and other contraband continued. Two of the five assaulted officers were treated at Auburn Memorial Hospital for minor injuries and...

The State Department and some lawmakers are waxing indignant about newspaper disclosures of a secret 1995 deal between Vice President Al Gore and then-Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. After the newspaper reports were published, the State Department acknowledged this week that Mr. Gore assured Russia that the United States would not sanction the Kremlin for Russian arm sales to Iran, if they stopped by 1999. But rather than acknowledge the adverse impact this underhanded arrangement could have on national security, the State Department and legislators have lashed out at the newspapers that disclosed the Gore-Chernomyrdin arrangement. "I hope this is...
