An unspeakable Eldritch horror from the depths of aeons and untouched by mortal creatures funneled her disapproval over Melania Trump’s snakeskin stilettos yesterday into an article for Vogue magazine.

For most of his 26 years in the military, Maj. Jeff Hackett was a standout Marine. Two tours in Iraq destroyed him. Home from combat, he drank too much, suffered public breakdowns and was hospitalized for panic attacks. In June 2010, he killed himself. Hackett’s suicide deeply troubled Gen. James Amos, the commandant of the Marine Corps. Hackett had been plucked from the enlisted ranks to lead Marines as an officer. He left behind a widow, four sons and more than $460,000 in debts. To Amos, Hackett was a casualty of war — surely the family deserved some compensation from...

I'm seeking some information from anyone who may know about the process or has gone through it. My husband was placed on the TDRL list June of 2005. Our end date is next week. His last appoints for the PEB haven't been set up, he can't get a hold of the woman who handles them, and our ID cards ie., our DEERS and medical expire next week. We can't find anyone who knows how to get them extended temporarily until the PEB is done and he's placed on the PDRL. He has been in contact with the Wounded Warriors for...

f the citizens of New Jersey like candor, Chris Christie is the governor they’ve been waiting for. Or I should say citizens of “the failed state” of New Jersey, as he tends to call it. It’s a “broken state” and a state that’s “broke.” New Jersey was in “a shambles,” he says, when he became governor in January. It’s “a fiscal basket case,” suffering from the “madness” of tax increases and excessive government spending, a “wonderful state” that’s been brought to “the edge of bankruptcy” and faces “the ruination” of its economy and “the quality of life that we want...

A Massachusetts mother with nine children who had asked a hospital for post-delivery birth control was sterilized instead without her consent, according to a lawsuit against the Springfield hospital and several doctors and nurses. Tessa Savicki, 35, claimed that doctors at Baystate Medical Center had agreed to insert an intrauterine device, or IUD, that she brought to the operating room, but instead performed a tubal ligation that effectively ended her chances of having more children. "They've done something. They cannot correct this," she told ABCNews.com. "You think you're safe at the hospital. You're not." Savicki's attorney, Dr. Max Borten of...

The recent election of Danielle Smith as leader of the Wildrose Alliance reminded me that among the many things I love about the libertarian/right wing are the women. Could be our slogan: Come for the culture war ... stay for the chicks. Right-wing women rock. Not for us the sturdy, honest calves of the New Democrat/Green Party female, honed on eco-tourist rainforest hikes. Those legs are often on unfortunate display, extending from a knee-length tweed skirt as hairy as the legs themselves, and end in a pair of Birkenstocks. I have yet to see a pair of Birkenstock women's shoes...

Its name is pronounced like "hola," the Spanish word for "hello," and its members want Onslow County's Hispanic immigrant and American communities to feel similarly welcome. Since founding the Onslow Hispanic Latino Association - or OHLA - at least four years ago, members say, they have made it their mission to bridge the gap between the two communities and serve as a resource hub for Hispanic immigrants in the area. But that doesn't mean just giving handouts, said Executive Director Joe Luna. "We're not handing things out just to hand things out," Luna said. "We want the Hispanic community to...

I have a question for those of you who enjoy gardening. I have a very good friend who has a yard full of this vine. We thought it was a form of poison-ivy because whenever we touch it, we get a rash. We have researched quite a bit and discovered it's not poison-ivy, but peppervine. Has anyone else ever run into this? I have found a couple of gardening forums that have some anecdotal evidence of the rash, but nothing factual. We have found it is very prolific and next to impossible to eradicate. Thanks all for your help.

A Brazilian spider delivers more than a painful bite that sends most victims to the hospital. Its venom stimulates an hours-long erection. Now scientists have figured out the chemical that seems to be responsible for the penis boost. In Brazil, emergency room staff can immediately spot the victims of a bite from the Brazilian wandering spider (Phoneutria nigriventer). Patients not only experience overall pain and an increase in blood pressure, they also sport an uncomfortable erection. "The erection is a side effect that everybody who gets stung by this spider will experience along with the pain and

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana's largest school district is considering policies that would give lesbian and gay employees rights and protections similar to those extended decades ago to racial minorities and women. Indianapolis Public Schools officials said the move is essential to treat their staff equitably, although opponents argue that it extends unfair protections to a group based on its behavior rather than race or gender. IPS has circulated its proposal and was expected to vote on it within the next few months. The district has been quietly adding "sexual orientation" to its nondiscrimination and anti-harassment policies for several years. "It's the...

Three top officials of a nationwide janitorial service based in West Palm Beach were charged Thursday with tax fraud and employing undocumented immigrants, in a federal probe that rounded up more than 200 undocumented workers across the nation. The indictment accuses Rosenbaum-Cunningham International, or RCI, with knowingly hiring undocumented immigrants and avoiding payment of more than $18.6 million in federal taxes in a cleaning business whose clients included the House of Blues, Hard Rock Cafe, ESPN Zone, China Grill, Dave & Busters and other national chains. The business took in more than $54.3 million between 2001 and 2005, federal officials...

One of the more shameful actions Congress took last year was crushing an innovative dairyman who found a way around federal dairy regulations that artificially raise the price of milk and cost consumers some $1.5 billion, according to Citizens Against Government Waste,. It was a bipartisan conspiracy, embodied in an amendment never subjected to committee hearings. Hein Hettinga is a Dutch-born dairyman who started out as a hired hand in Southern California dairies and through entrepreneurial moxie came to own several dairies. Then he figured out a way around federal milk-marketing regulations. Passed in the 1930s when most dairies were...

Dear (name deleted): I received your message indicating surprise and disappointment with your final grade this semester. In your message, you said “I did miss several days in your class. I did not mean to miss but I was just going through so much this semester with a death in my family, my house got robbed, fired from my job for being 10 minutes late and my good friend died so i [sic] am sorry for that.” I am sorry, too. I am particularly sorry that I was hog hunting in South Carolina and was, therefore, unable to respond immediately...

SAN DIEGO — The high-top sneakers cost $215 at a San Diego boutique, but the designer is giving them away to migrants before they cross to this side of the U.S.-Mexico border. These are no ordinary shoes. A compass and flashlight dangle from one shoelace. The pocket in the tongue is for money or pain relievers. A rough map of the border region is printed on a removable insole. They are red, white and green, the colors of the Mexican flag. On the back ankle, a drawing of Mexico’s patron saint of migrants. On this side of the border, the...

As a Marine, the National Anthem means something more than the game is about to start. As a former Drill Instructor, it's almost habitual for me to look for those not rendering the proper honor. Caleb Brock caught my eye. Scratching his head, blowing bubbles and moving around. At the conclusion of the song, I managed to give...

A head-on collision between a Dulzura woman and a suspected migrant smuggler landed the woman in the hospital. But instead of blaming the smuggler for her troubles, the woman said it is the Border Patrol’s fault. Yolanda Jaco was on her way home from work on Tuesday night when the crash happened. As she drove past Jamul eastbound on Highway 94 -- just minutes from her home in Dulzura -- she said saw the headlights coming at her. The next thing Jaco remembered, she said, was being in a lot of pain and Border Patrol agents screaming at a suspected...

Well .. here we go again. It's May 1st. May Day. A day which, ironically enough, was once a huge holiday in the Communist World. No ... it's not Lenin's birthday. In the U.S. we celebrate Lenin's birthday with something called "Earth Day." That in itself is rather strange, considering the fact that Earth Day has become somewhat of an anti-capitalist celebration. But, I digress. The Marching Mexicans will be at it again today ... they're filling the streets with the avowed attention to "close down" some major American cities. First of all, boycotts, especially short ones like this, don't...
