  • Bishop Thomas Gumbleton silenced by Vatican (Vanity)

"The only possible reason he would be asked to testify is because he is a high-profile Catholic bishop"

Bishop Thomas Gumbleton was asked to testify because HE was abused by a Catholic priest as a child. Gumbleton IS a Catholic Church sex-abuse victim.

(Gumbleton's brother is gay, I think also abused by same priest - but can't remember for sure, but his brother is gay and so Gumbleton had spoken up early about gay rights, another thorn in the church's side when it comes to Gumbleton).

Many folk used to send their boys up north to pick cherries in the summer. Was especially good place to send a misbehaving boy, not only would mom and dad (and the community) get a break from the trouble-making, but the cherry farmers had a way of getting the boys to work and build a work ethic. Many seniors tell how their boys came back from a summer of cherry picking never to cause trouble again, study hard (they had learned what type of labor they would be doing the rest of their lives if they didn't study) and become responsible citizens.

Thanks, and more questions as I read more.

I read that Devlin was adopted, as were three of his BROTHERS. Strange Devlin's parents adopted so many boys and no girls.

We know that abusers go on to abuse.

Was Devlin sexually abused as a child? If so, did Devlin see his own adoption as no more than a child abducted/adopted for sex? If he was raised to think it was ok to "adopt" a child for sexual reasons, it would explain his behavior.

I wonder how old Devlin was when he was adopted?

The news just never keeps up with my questions. If I owned a newspaper, I wouldn't sleep til I had the answers.

We live near a foster home, the foster mom said over the years she's seen that abused kids are brazen about abusing others and feel no shame about abuse as to them it is "normal", which is why they quickly start abusing other children around them when placed in foster care - so I worry if Shawn was abused did he make advances towards Tony or his brothers?

    Questions of the day:

    1-Did Tony see Ben?
2-How did they plan on explaining Ben to Tony?
3-Obviously Tony would recognize Ben with so much media coverage of the kidnapping, and the white truck description.
4-It would be hard for Devlin to kill Shawn - how to explain disappearance to Tony's family and other kids Shawn hung out with.
5-Why did Devlin teach Shawn to drive a month ago? To drive the getaway vehicle after the kidnapping? Tony was in the truck when Shawn drove, too, according to news reports, was he in on it?
6-Was Shawn in the truck during Ben's kidnapping?
    7-Did Shawn kidnap Ben?
8-Did Devlin ever post pictures of Shawn? Should we be looking for missing boys on porn sites? What about the face scanning technology we heard about used on crowds to find terrorists, can't that be used for this purpose?

The article lists the states targeted as:
Georgia, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, Oregon and California.

I looked up polls at http://www.surveyusa.com/currentelectionpolls.html

ALL of these states have Kerry winning or are swing states, with the exception of Georgia.

Would there be a political reason for terrorists to choose these states?

We also have to remember that we know how far candidates will go to win elections - could this have been planted in an effort to scare people in those states back to supporting Bush?

Having seen the media used so many times for such things, it is something that needs consideration. Hate to say it, but i hope I am right in this thinking, because the alternative - that terrorists are targeting our schools - is much worse.

Hamtramck Residents To Hear Prayer Broadcasts

Issue Sparks Heated Debate Among Residents

    POSTED: 9:13 am EDT April 21, 2004

    UPDATED: 9:43 am EDT April 21, 2004

Hamtramck residents will soon be hearing a Muslim call to prayer five times a day following a unanimous vote by the City Council Tuesday night.

The issue of sending out the prayer on a loudspeaker in the city sparked a heated debate among residents.

"If you guys think about it, the Muslim call to prayer is actually a beautiful thing," an unidentified man who supported the issue said during the City Council meeting.

Some residents are opposed to the call to prayer, saying it gives state sponsorship of a religion and it lifts Islam above all other religions in Hamtramck, Local 4 reported.

"I would say that is a distortion," Hamtramck City Councilwoman Karen Majewski said. "We worked very hard to craft this ordinance in such a way that it would cover all means of religious expression."

Resident Maria Radtke called it "one big mess."

"There'll be no peace as far as I'm concerned," Radtke said.

Resident Bob Golen also opposes the call to prayer. He said he is a Christian and does not believe in the tenants of the Muslim faith.

Majewski said the ordinance will allow the city "a way to deal with all religions, not simply the Muslim call to prayer."

The councilwoman also said the amendment to the noise ordinance passed by the City Council "gives us the flexibility to adjust the number of speakers, the direction of the speakers, the level of loudness. So that will all depend on the community response, on the particular neighborhood that the mosque may be in, because we have several mosques, and the particularities of each case."

City Council members may have voted to allow the daily prayer, but they have not yet set a decibel level for the mosques. The council will make the decision at a meeting next week.

The calls are expected to begin in May with broadcasts between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

As for complaints of the noise pollution created by the call to prayer, Majewski said there are other noise issues because Hamtramck is an urban city.

"We have a lot of noise on our streets," Majewski said.

She said there is flexibility within the ordinance to deal with all of the noise problems such as cars, trains and noisy neighbors.

"This ordinance gives us a way, a mechanism, by which to deal with these complaints," Majewski said.

There is one other important argument you forgot - my computer reminded me - FREEZE UPS - computers are not picky about where and when they decide to freeze up and refuse to work. This has got to be a potential extreme time waster and a problem that is inherent in computers. Not to mention DEAD BATTERIES!

Here is one college student's post I found online for help with her laptop, it will prove prophetic, I'm sure, as parents bang their head against walls because a test was missed or hours and hours of homework lost on a froze up computer:

Beth to school 8/21/02. Plugged into network.
Connected to email. Said goodbye. Beth was early on
campus to try out for sports.

8/22/02. Beth reports a few problems but she was not
using the computer much because of tryouts. Eat, Tryout,
    Sleep. Etc.

8/28/02 Beth registered for classes. Still have
intermittent problems but not using it much.

    9/02/02 Beth's Classes start.

9/03/02 Beth calls and says that the laptop keeps
crashing. Specifically she was receiving file not found
at cold boot. Plus IE6 would disappear with no error
message. Plus IE6 would freeze up the whole computer.
She needed to power down and up to continue.

9/06/02. Beth says she can not get her homework done
online because of computer problems. She starts her list.
IT guys at school work on the problem (to no avail). Drive re-imaged 5 times. We look for phone numbers. Call Best Buy and were told to write down the error messages and bring in the system.

I found this article that said there were other problems on this flight. Three to be exact, here is an exerpt from this article stating problems in the "cargo bay" (or hold?):

Engelauf said the shuttle and its systems were working well, with only a trio of problems reported. "I would call this an exceptionally clean orbiter so far," he said. One of two heaters in a cryogenic storage tank within the cargo bay wasn't working, and neither was part of an intercom system between the crew cabin and the SpaceHab module. The only trouble of any consequence is with a system that processes data downlinked from the SpaceHab module. Although the communication link with the shuttle's Ku-band system is working well, the experiment data is not being captured on the ground. Engelauf said that until the problem is solved, some experiment data will have to be recorded in the shuttle and played back later. In the meantime, Columbia remains in a stable orbit with plans to land back in Florida on Feb. 1.

mission control knew that some signals, like tire pressure and hold temperature were lost well before the shuttle reached Texas; either the sensors were destroyed or the wires connecting them to the transponder. Either way, these events spelled serious trouble because those things are internal to the craft.

What is in the hold? Could something have caught fire inside and that been the cause of fire and not re-entry heat? It has happened on aircraft.

U.S. Marshals raided the home of a former leader of the Michigan Militia Wednesday night.

Federal authorities went to the Dexter home of Mark Koernke (pictured, left) to serve a warrant for illegal use of radio equipment. Inside they found a stash of guns and ammunition, Local 4 reported.

Koernke is currently in custody on other weapons charges.

Federal authorities believe that weapons they seized Wednesday night belong to Koernke and not his family. He could face new federal firearms charges if the weapons belong to him, the station reported.

The study also found that students who attend private religious schools do not act much better than those who attend public schools.

I know I'll get flamed for this, but...The state has not been taking away responsibility from parents via government schools. Where do you come up with this? As you can see private religious schools are not fairing much better!

You are sticking your head in the sand by scapegoating public schools for every social ill, the fact is the privately schooled aren't much better! So we need to find other sources of what the problem really is if it isn't schools. Look at these Enron guys, they weren't public schooled, neither were any of the other corporate criminals of late. Fact is they were privately schooled! Could it be they ere raised by people like you who made them think they were smarter and better than everyone else and that gave them the right to cheat those they felt were below them and didn't deserve that money, anyway? And in those guy's eyes, the stockholder's deserved it!

After years of people like you de-humanizing any one who went to a public school, what kind of child will you raise, I'll tell you, a hateful, snobby adult who will think he is better than others and welcome to cheat them because they are just the inhuman products of the government! Some future for America. We need to find the real cause of these problems and fix them, and not just sit here in our arm chairs typing up insults about "government schools".

Maybe these kids have raised themselves because there parents spend half their time glued to a computer screen...think about how different the home environment has been for these kids!

I go back to the priest he asked to help him reach the FBI. I wonder, since he is not Christian, why he chose a Christian priest? Because the priest was on his "route" of churches he visited for handouts.

Churches don't communicate with one another as to who they are helping, and homeless people know this. They will make the rounds of churches, getting stuff and money from each one, by the end of the day you could have enough grocery coupons to feed yourself for a month and a good amount of pocket cash...we have them come to our church, then we go out to lunch and pass another church and low and behold there is the same guy at their door getting some more stuff...maybe muhammad did the same.

Get this: Osbourne went to TRUCK driving school!
Wasn't there a warning about terrorists attending them? Too much for coincidence? I would not believe much this guy has to say - he even hid to his girlfriend that he knew the suspects even while watching the TV pictures of the suspects! He hid it from her, not something an innocent person would do. Also, I wonder if, just as they tried to physically look western in appearance and clothing, they are also now carrying around bibles and pretending to be Christians as a cover? Makes sense, great way to keep people from becoming suspicious.

Here is the article from today's Detroit Free Press link

Woman says guest silent about sniper

Witness' arrival in Flint was a surprise
    October 28, 2002

BY NANCY A. YOUSSEF AND TAMARA AUDI
    FREE PRESS STAFF WRITERS
FLINT -- The call came out of nowhere last Monday, interrupting a typical afternoon with three words that shocked Tammy Jenkins:

    "I'm in Flint."

It was Nathaniel Osbourne, the New Jersey man with the soft Jamaican accent Jenkins met during the summer at a truck driving school in Indianapolis. The man who carried a Bible with him at all times, who told Jenkins that, like her, he valued a close relationship with God, told her he wanted to marry her. Without warning, he had come to Flint in search of a wife, steady work and a fresh start, she recalled Sunday.

But he did not tell her he knew one of the men arrested in the Washington-area sniper attacks, she said. Nor did he reveal he co-owned the 1990 Chevrolet Caprice thought to have been used in the shootings that killed 10, injured three and terrorized the capital region for three weeks.

Jenkins would discover those details Saturday morning when FBI agents pounded on her door in search of Osbourne. "Oh, man," she recalled him saying when he saw the agents. "I know what this is about."

Within a week of arriving in Michigan from Camden, N.J., Osbourne's past caught up with him. Sunday, Osbourne, 26, stood in front of a federal judge in Flint, answering for his role in the increasingly strange tale of the latest national nightmare.

U.S. Magistrate Wallace Capel Jr. ordered Osbourne held without bond as a material witness in the case. He is not a suspect in the shootings, federal officials said.

Osbourne agreed to waive his right to a detention hearing in Michigan and to be transferred to Maryland, where he is expected to be questioned in the case. He is a Jamaican citizen and entered the United States in 1996. Officials said they were unsure of his visa status.

His court-appointed lawyer, Kenneth Sasse, said Osbourne has a marginal connection to the suspected snipers, and is cooperating completely with investigators.

"I don't think he has any knowledge or involvement in the shootings," Sasse said after the hearing. He said investigators already have questioned his client at length. Sasse said he expects U.S. marshals to take Osbourne to Maryland in the next three days.

John Allen Muhammad, 41, and John Lee Malvo, believed to be 17, were arrested Thursday as they slept in the battered Chevy at a rest stop near Frederick, Md.

Osbourne and Muhammad bought the car for $250 from Sure Shot Auto Sales Inc. in Trenton, N.J., on Sept. 10, and registered it the next day. Osbourne and Muhammad had listed the same New Jersey address in Camden, a gritty south Jersey city near Philadelphia.

But whether Osbourne actually lived with Muhammad, and how well he knew him was unclear Sunday. Jenkins said he never spoke about the shooters, even while the two watched sniper coverage on television this week, or even after police released the names of the suspects.

In court, officials said Osbourne told them he immediately recognized Muhammad when he saw his photo on television but never came forward.

"I'm highly upset," Jenkins said, adding that if Osbourne had gone to the police instead of forcing them to track him down, "this all could've been avoided."

Osbourne's hearing came as several jurisdictions are positioning themselves for first crack at prosecuting the two sniper suspects. Prosecutors said Sunday the decision will come down to which jurisdiction can promise the toughest penalty. In Maryland, murder charges related to six of the 13 shootings were filed last week. Officials in Virginia, where three people were killed, planned to file charges against the suspects today.

Court records and Jenkins' story of her friendship with Osbourne, reveal a penniless drifter who bounced from one menial job to the next and whose interests ranged from religion to the reggae music of his home country.

During the 11-minute hearing Sunday, the slight, soft-spoken man said he needed a court-appointed attorney because he is broke. He said he owes $1,000 to C1 Driver Solutions, the Indianapolis truck driving school, and he pays $300 a month in child support for a child in Massachusetts. According to the court hearing, he was arrested May 30 on a domestic violence charge in New Jersey. He had driver's licenses from New York, New Jersey and Indiana.

Jenkins, 24, said she and Osbourne met in July. Almost immediately, Jenkins said, Osbourne talked of marriage. Jenkins, a devout Christian, said that Osbourne told her he was "a man of God."

"We studied the word of God together," she said.

When the truck driving course ended, she returned to Flint and he to New Jersey. They kept in touch with weekly phone calls, talking about spiritual matters, she said.

The calls became less frequent toward the end of summer. But Osbourne started calling her again about the time the sniper attacks began. He called her the day before he arrived in Flint, but didn't tell her he planned to visit. He explained his arrival by saying he wanted to "get a close relationship with God," she said. "If anyone could help him with that, I could."

She took Osbourne to meet her pastor, the Rev. Charles Byrd, 78, and to a Bible study meeting at her Flint church, the Greater Emmanuel Temple Apostolic Church. The subject of marriage came up again, she said. But the two never got a chance to make plans. And any prospect Osbourne had with Jenkins disappeared this week.

Even if it turns out Osbourne had nothing to do with the snipers, Jenkins said she will have nothing to do with him now.

Hours before giving a voluntary Sunday sermon at her church, she resolved: "It's over."

We just heard this said from Police Chief Moose
"the sniper caught like a duck in a noose"

    Next line? Poetic justice?

Who was it earlier tonight during the Tacoma backyard video who said the guy was native american then spent a minute backpedaling that he meant a person from America, not a native american in the indian sense...He was stuttering as he corrected himself like he had somehow slipped something out he shouldn't have.

I heard that the other day after a disc jockey broke into a radio program to announce the lastest shooting, the song "another one bites the dust" played immediately after the announcement...after the station received complaints, they claimed the songs were lined up by a computer and it was purely coincidential that that song came up at that time!

They said on the news that the person of interest, who lived in the home in Tacoma at one time was of hispanic descent, it didn't say if the entire neighborhood was hispanic, but from what I saw of the neighbors who were interviewed, it seemed to be a very diverse neighborhood, with most of the people interviewed being white, non hispanics.

They have said that the house was rented by someone from Fort Lewis...that he was of mexican descent. A tree stump was removed to recover spent bullets as it had paper targets that had been taped to it when it was used for target practice. The police want the sniper to see this on the news and so it was leaked intentionally...the other search sites around the country have not been released.

How could anyone practice in that yard?

You'd be surprised, but I agree, they shouldn't be but I have seen people do stuff like that, test a new gun out in the yard...maybe just shot it once, not something that happened a lot, which is why they would have expected to check the whole yard before finding a bullet casing.

    home was broken into

The card came from this home, and I'll bet anything a gun was stolen in the break-in so they are looking for bullet fragments to see if it is the gun that is currently being used by the sniper.

I'll bet the owner used to do target shooting in the yard before the gun was stolen. This is why he isn't a suspect.

we dissected baby pigs in my high school, my kids recently disected owl pellets, which is something owls puke up that contains the skeletons of small animals they've eaten.

How does PETA feel about animals eating one another? How will they get animals in the wild to treat each other ethically? Special training? A vegetarian diet for my dog?

or..."Hurry up, come'on let's get out of here! There might still be a bank left to rob if you would just hurry up!"

...has anyone considered the FACT that the Muslims may have already set up a network of "safe houses" that these snipers could be disappearing into.

This is what I suspect. Maybe time for police to make deputies of citizens who each would be assigned a time slot to watch a known muslim home/business that also has a garage or place to hide a vehicle. I remember working for a bunch of goofs in Southfield MI (Columbia Nutritional Diet System) who followed a religious nut out west, Bhagwan, see this link

This was about 20 years ago...they had 200,000 followers and over 600 "safe" houses all over the world, these people traveled from house to house, this fact was used to try to get me to join - "look how you can travel for free with us" we often had people from other countries hanging around the office during their stay at local safe houses...I often wondered how many of them were hiding out at the time from something. I saw picture from the ranch with guys holding machine guns and my coworkers started signing up for trips to the ranch and came back with different names - one guy named Tom came back as Cheetah, another guy, the VP, came back as Veet, it was very freaky to see smart business people fall for this - they were after tax free statis as ministers in this at first but got brainwashed at the ranch as far as I could tell from their stories before and after the trips to the ranch.

I am sure Muslims have the same safe houses already set up too.

(I was not interested in their efforts to "convert" me - I was young and too busy partying - LOL - and eventually quit when they talked of mass suicide in case of bhagwans death -was the last straw for me!).

I think that the muslim groups, who are much bigger than that little cult I described, would definitely have safe houses and safe businesses for the sniper to hide out in...only a fool would think otherwise and having seen this type of system with my own eyes with that bhagwan cult, would hope the police and fbi are also on the ball on this.

Why do you suppose they move south in VA, instead of moving north in MD? Doesn't seem like sensible tactics to me.

Maybe to get out of the range of those highway cams you can look through on sniperwatch? Another reason for a night hit, also, can't see the car on the cam as well at night.
