SALISBURY, N.C. — Commissioners in one North Carolina county plan to continue offering Christian prayers at public meetings, regardless of a letter from a civil liberties group citing a recent Supreme Court action upholding a federal court's ban on the practice. The Salisbury Post reported (http://bit.ly/xtafV5 ) that a huge crowd turned out for the Rowan County Board of Commissioners meeting Monday night to offer their support to the elected officials, who say they'll defy a decision by the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals striking down so-called sectarian prayer, or prayer that's explicitly linked to a particular religion, such...

A Minneapolis, Minnesota couple is making waves across the Internet with a web site they created allowing the public to vote on whether or not they should give birth or have an abortion. Pete and Alisha Arnold are both 30 and they are 17 weeks pregnant with a perfectly healthy baby nicknamed “Wiggles.” The unborn baby is just weeks away from viability and past the point at which most women have had an abortion. However, the Arnolds have set up a website, http://www.birthornot.com because they aren’t sure whether they want to become parents — despite the fact that that journey...

ROSSANO, ITALY -- A baby who survived nearly two days before dying in an Italian hospital was aborted only because he had a cleft lip and palate. Scans of the boy, who was at 22 weeks gestation, had shown the conditions that can be corrected by surgery, but his mother chose to abort him in a hospital in her hometown of Rossano in southern Italy, the Telegraph in London reported. The 11-ounce baby survived the April 24 abortion, but doctors left him to die. The hospital's Roman Catholic chaplain, Antonio Martello, discovered the boy still alive the next day, about...

The Obama campaign said it was a mistake for an outreach coordinator to join a meeting last month attended by leaders of two controversial Muslim groups as it seeks votes from large Muslim populations in swing states. Nihad Awad, executive director of CAIR, also attended the session, as did the group's legislative director. The government named CAIR an unindicted coconspirator in the Justice Department's racketeering prosecution last year of alleged Hamas fund-raisers. CAIR said the designation was unjustified; the case ended in a mistrial, but is being brought again by the government.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama suggested this weekend that the children of illegal immigrants should have an opportunity to attend public community colleges -- thereby interjecting himself into a contentious North Carolina issue. Obama said children who attended public schools should have the chance to continue to improve themselves rather than being consigned to the fringes of society. "For us to deny them access to community college, even though they've never lived in Mexico, at least as far as they can tell ... is to deny that this is how we've always built this country up," Obama said in an...

When Osama bin Laden issued his videotaped message to the American people last month, a young jihad enthusiast went online to help spread the word."America needs to listen to Shaykh Usaamah very carefully and take his message with great seriousness," he wrote on his blog. "America is known to be a people of arrogance." Unlike bin Laden, the blogger was not operating from a remote location. It turns out he is a 21-year-old American named Samir Khan who produces his blog from his parents' home in North Carolina, where he serves as a kind of Western relay station for the...

TECATE, MEXICO - Mexicans are increasingly giving up on the American dream and staying home, and the federal crackdown on illegal immigrants announced Friday is likely to discourage even potential migrants from taking the risks. U.S. border agents detained 55,545 illegal migrants jumping over border walls, walking through the desert and swimming across the Rio Grande between October and June. That is down 38 percent for the entire border compared with the same period a year before. U.S. and Mexican officials say increased border security, including 6,000 National Guard soldiers, remote surveillance technology and drone planes, have thwarted smugglers who...

CHAPEL HILL -- The Town Council unanimously backed a call Monday for the impeachment of President George W. Bush, in a meeting in which it managed to touch on politics, panhandling and downtown parking. The council also heard that feelings were somewhat divided about a possible "neighborhood conservation district" for Coker Hills. On the political front, the council voted 8-0 in favor of a call for impeaching President Bush, reacting to a petition from the Elders for Peace group from the Carol Woods retirement community in Chapel Hill. The council members, all registered Democrats, passed the resolution without comment. "The...

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina has the highest gas price in the continental United States. Triple-A says the average price per gallon here is three-dollars-seven cents. The state is topped only by the District of Columbia and Hawaii, where a gallon of gas averages three-14 and three-24, respectively. Triple-A says regular unleaded in Asheville is the highest in the state at three-19 a gallon. A key reason for that dubious title here is North Carolina's gas tax. The 27 cents paid on each gallon is the highest among Southern states and fifth-highest nationally. By comparison, Virginia's gas tax is...

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- John Edwards was frequently asked about the large mole on his lip during last year's national elections. Radio personality Don Imus even gigged him for "that thing on your lip." Now the mole is gone, or at least barely visible. But Edwards said part of it was removed to provide a medical biopsy, rather than for any cosmetic reasons. "I didn't want to do it," Edwards said in an interview before a speech to a Democratic dinner. "What the doctor told me last summer when I got the physical for the v.p. thing that the thing on...

WINSTON-SALEM -- Last week voters went to the polls to select a vision for the future. Now Americans must find a way forward together. This week, as we honor service and sacrifice on Veterans Day, an image from this political season must be put to rest. The presidential campaign featured the resurgence of a myth from the early 1990s. That myth is that soldiers returning from Vietnam were spit upon by citizens or war protesters. That claim has been used to turn honest differences of opinion about the war into toxic indictments. As a scholar of urban legends I am...

(GREENSBORO) - Greensboro's Muslim community wants an apology from a police officer who they say broke the shoulder of a 68-year-old Egyptian-American woman. Afaf Saudi, who's accused of resisting police officers and assaulting an employee of a Wal-Mart store on Saturday, also suffered a broken rib, a mild heart attack and cuts and bruises on her wrists. She remains in Moses Cone Hospital awaiting shoulder surgery. Wajeh Muhammad, treasurer of the Islamic Center of the Triad, wants the city to pay for the woman's medical bills and for the officer responsible to issue an apology in a language she can...

A new campaign spending rule seems to put the GOP candidate at a disadvantage to Gov. Mike EasleyEasley has millions for his run. If money matters in the contest for governor, Republican candidate Patrick Ballantine is perilously behind Gov. Mike Easley -- and could stay that way because of a new campaign finance law that Democrats pushed through the state legislature. The law prohibits advocacy groups from spending corporate or union money to help any candidate within 60 days of a general election. That could thwart Ballantine, whose campaign is hoping for a million-dollar infusion from a national Republican group....

Teresa Heinz Kerry, years before becoming a Democrat, railed against the party's ``putrid'' politics, said she didn't trust Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and angrily called the liberal lion a ``perfect bastard.'' In comments published in a little-known 1975 book about political wives called ``The Power Lovers: An Intimate Look at Politicians and Their Marriages,'' Heinz Kerry lashed out at the senator she'll share the primetime convention stage with tonight. ``I know some couples who stay together only for politics,'' Heinz Kerry said at the time. ``If Ted Kennedy holds on to that marriage (to ex-wife Joan) just for the Catholic...

WASHINGTON - The Senate approved a plan Thursday to put new restrictions on cigarette makers and pay tobacco farmers $12 billion to give up federal quotas propping up their prices. An unlikely alliance of anti-smoking advocates and tobacco-state senators teamed up to secure the 78-15 vote to combine a 10-year buyout for tobacco growers with new Food and Drug Administration powers. The measure was added as an amendment to a corporate tax bill and broke weeks of deadlock over how to proceed with negotiations on that bill. The Senate approved the tax bill by voice vote and sent it to...

Lewisburg, Pennsylvania-AP -- A theater operator is offering Republicans the chance to see the movie, "Fahrenheit 9/11" for free. Eric Faden (FAY'den) of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, says he found that few of his conservative friends were watching the movie because they didn't want to support the film's director financially. So on Saturday he's offering to buy tickets for any card-carrying Republicans who want to see it at a special showing. Faden says he's not trying to convince anyone that director Michael Moore is right. He says the film is "fantastic" but also "fantastically flawed." A local Republican leader is praising Faden...
