  • Zika Funding Fails Again in Congress

    09/07/2016 9:48:54 AM PDT · by napscoordinator · 24 replies
    NBC News ^ | September 6, 2016 | Maggie Fox
Congress came back from a seven-week break Tuesday and once again failed to move forward a bill that would pay for a federal Zika response. As senators traded barbs about whose fault it was, Florida health officials said they'd found seven more home-grown cases of Zika, six of them part of an outbreak in Miami Beach. Florida now has documented 56 locally transmitted cases of Zika infection, presumably passed by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that are active nearly year round in south Florida.
  • The interesting thing that happened when Kansas cut taxes and California hiked them

The Washington Post ^ | June 17, 2016 | By Jim Tankersley and Max Ehrenfreund
In 2012, voters in California approved a measure to raise taxes on millionaires, bringing their top state income tax rate to 13.3 percent, the highest in the nation. Conservative economists predicted calamity, or at least a big slowdown in growth. Also that year, the governor of Kansas signed a series of changes to the state's tax code, including reducing income and sales tax rates. Conservative economists predicted a boom. Neither of those predictions came true. Not right away -- California grew just fine in the year the tax hikes took effect -- and especially not in the medium term, as...

Earlier today, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy started a filibuster on the Senate floor on the subject of gun violence. Murphy has been perhaps the most passionate gun safety advocate since the Sandy Hook shooting occurred in his home state in 2012. Over the past few hours, Sen. Murphy has been joined by a number of his colleagues including Pat Toomey. Pennsylvania’s junior Senator has been one of the few Republican members to advocate in favor of gun safety measures. “I’m of the view that it’s time to get something done here,” Toomey began. “We’ve done a lot of talking.” Sen....

“This skit was outright sacrilege. They know if they did this to Muslims they’d have to be put into the witness protection program,” the singer-actor said. Pat Boone is calling out NBC and Saturday Night Live for allegedly being anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, cowardly, “diabolical” and even demonic for a skit over the weekend that parodied God’s Not Dead 2, the actor-singer’s latest movie. In God’s Not Dead 2, Melissa Joan Hart plays a public school teacher who is persecuted for answering a student’s question about Jesus. In the SNL skit, a trailer for a movie called God is a Boob Man...

The militant group Al-Shabaab -- Al Qaeda's affiliate in Somalia -- has released a recruitment video featuring GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump. The more-than 51-minute propaganda video comes on the heels of a war of words between Trump and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton over her suggestion that the real estate mogul's controversial remarks about Muslims would be used to recruit jihadis. The video includes a clip of Trump calling for a "shutdown" of Muslims entering the United States. "Donald J. In a rare late-night session, the Senate gave final approval to an ambitious budget and debt deal early Friday, sending it to President Barack Obama to sign. The final vote on passage was 64-35, as Democrats joined forces with Republican defense hawks over the objections of GOP presidential candidates Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio, all of whom voted against the deal. The bill is aimed at averting a debt default, avoiding a partial government shutdown and setting spending priorities for the next two years. Earlier in Friday's session, the Senate voted 63-35 to end debate on the measure....

Sex might very well sell, but so does separation. America has long had a love affair with stories of divorce, breakups and infidelity. We eat it up like chocolate cake, feasting on the drama of others’ heartbreak. Nothing whets the public’s appetite like a scandalous affair, and judging by the most common tabloid headlines, you’d think that all we want is to see a couple falter and fail. We care more about cheating than loyalty — anniversaries may be sweet, but they sure don’t sell. Couples who make it are just so . . . boring. But Andy Grammer wants none of...

Penn State had faced a cap of 65 scholarships starting in 2014, but instead will have 75 scholarships in 2014, 80 in 2015 and the full allotment of 85 in 2016.

The funding extension, known as a Continuing Resolution (CR), keeps to the $1.047 trillion spending agreement reached between the parties and avoids a government shutdown until March 27, 2013, nearly five months after the November election. The federal government has continually relied on short-term funding extensions since 2009, the last time the Democrat-controlled Senate passed a traditional budget plan that set spending levels.
