Sources say the diminutive movie mogul is motivated by jealousy because his old friend Bill Clinton now prefers the company of supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle. Geffen's animosity is also fueled by Burkle's attempt to buy the Los Angeles Times, which Geffen had wanted to purchase for himself.

O'REILLY: A "Time" magazine investigation says, 3 million illegal aliens crossed the Mexican border, and we talked about this four and a half years... BUSH: We have. I know it's a issue that you're concerned about. O'REILLY: Every year, 3.5 million illegals come over. Why can't the federal government control that?

Why Lynndie England is the public face of Torturegate May 10th, 2004 5:45 PM hough most of the military guards charged with abusing prisoners are men, the public face of Torturegate is a woman. And the press has had a field day insinuating that "tomboyish" Lynndie England is something other than a natural lady. "Leasher gal" was how the New York Post referred to England in a headline last Saturday. The high-end papers were more tactful, but the fact that her picture made the front page of both The Washington Post and The New York Times is hardly incidental. Much...

Donald Rumsfeld was, fielding unfriendly fire on Tuesday over the military's torture of Iraqi prisoners. This time, his usual pose of barely concealed contempt seemed more like scarcely repressed rage. Every muscle in his body was tensed, and his shoulders looked like wire hangers were holding them up. It was Rummy's Strangelove-ian attempt to keep from shrugging. Hey, the voice within him longed to say, those fuckers are lucky to have their fingernails. But Rummy is a master of extenuation. When Baghdad was looted while the U.S. army stood by, he uttered his most famous euphemism: "Stuff happens." Now he...
  • Who’s a War Hero? It Can’t be a Liberal!

When you celebrate an author, i.e., Ann Coulter, who asserts that anyone to the left of Ronald Reagan has been, is and will continue to be a traitor, you are perplexed by this John Kerry fellow. He is, after all, a liberal Democrat from that breeding ground of treachery, Massachusetts. He is from an elite background, so you know what that means: He is out of touch with the decent, flag-waving people of the American heartland. For God’s sake, the man speaks French! Where did he learn that? In some commie-sympathizing cell in Cambridge, no doubt. Here’s the problem: John...

While Europe is a eunuch, America is our only shield We can't walk away from Bush's follies without a credible military alternative Overtaken on the motorway by a motorcycle weaving between lanes at reckless speed, we glance at the rider and mutter something about bloody fools. Curiosity focuses upon the pillion passenger. Is he or she enjoying this? Is it not ridiculous to put one's life absolutely in the hands of a reckless idiot? In other words: how does it feel to be Tony Blair in Iraq? So much bad news turned up at Chequers over the weekend that the...
  • Ed Koch Ticks Off Yippies

<p>April 25, 2004 -- THE Yippies are so mad at Ed Koch for helping the organizers of this summer's Republican National Convention here, they vow to camp out 24 hours a day in front of his Greenwich Village apartment. "We're so ticked off at Koch for turncoating, we'll be there 'round-the-clock. We want to make it so he won't be able to come home for four days," said Yippie leader John Penley. "We'll probably be arrested." The Yippies, who have been turned down for permits to pitch tents in Tompkins Square Park and East River Park, plan a 24-hour vigil outside Gracie Mansion on Aug. 22, the day before the convention starts. But Koch is their biggest target because he's appearing in billboards saying, "You don't have to be a Democrat to love New York." Another says, "The Republicans are coming. Make nice." The Yippies expect authorities to open Yankee Stadium to hold all the protesters who are arrested, and to call in reinforcements. "We want the National Guard. We're going to give them medical marijuana and massages. We think they're on our side," Penley said. "They don't want George Bush re-elected; then they'd have to go to Iraq."</p>

When Larry Bird joined the Celtics in 1979, I was just nine years old, dreaming about playing for the hometown team some day. My Dad and I attended just about every game at the Boston Garden. The place was dead. Bird came in and transformed everything, like Swayze waltzing into the Double Deuce and cleaning house in "Road House." He wasn't just great, he changed the way his teammates played. He brought everyone to a higher place. Of the 50 happiest moments of my life, Bird and the Garden were involved in at least a dozen of them. Larry Bird's...

Now that war is finally upon us, we must all hope or (if we share our leaders' piety) pray that, within a matter of days, the thing is done with, the Iraqi people will be free of their oppressor and able to enjoy the benefits of American-style democracy. Here is a brief reprise of some of the changes they can expect if the US decides to give Iraq a facsimile of its own highly regarded system. 1. At present, according to the official website of the Iraqi National Assembly ("a major organ for the expression of democracy") the 250 members...
  • Freeper Poll: Who are the best military analysts on TV?

There are quite a few former military men serving as analysts on the networks. Who do you think rank as the best. My top three are as follows:1) Gen. Barry McCaffrey-The best rounded of the military analysts IMO. He seems equally at ease discussing weapons and tactics or geopolitics and diplomacy.2) Col. Ken Allard-Similar to McCaffrey. He is a very bright guy who can discuss many topics authoritatively. Very knowledgable and articulate, but funny too.3) Gen. Tom McInerney-A little stiff at times, but he explains air operations very well IMO.

Someday, in the near future, the NBA will play a brand of basketball that almost completely leaves the traditional back-to-the-basket center out of the mix. As 7-footers are plucked from the ranks of high school, Europe and, heck, even China, the emphasis increasingly is on versatility -- passing skill, shooting range, athleticism. The game will evolve along with it, and low-post centers will be left behind. Ah, but for now, there is one stalwart of the old guard who is clutching to the traditions of the really, really tall in the NBA. That's self-proclaimed "dinosaur" Shaquille O'Neal. As long as...

ANE WALLACE: Thank you for joining us. SY HERSH: Glad to be here. JANE WALLACE: It might be safely said that the one country for whom the war on terror has been a bombless bonanza is Pakistan. In a matter of two weeks they went from being an international pariah, to being our new best friend. The aid started flowing. It is flowing in the billions. Are they worthy of our friendship and our aid, the Pakistanis? SY HERSH: In a perfect world, sure, it would be great if Musharraf, the head of the country can hold it together and...

The superlatively conservative golden-haired commentator Ann Coulter sold tons of her book Slander by charging that, yes, the media is a tool of the left. Now swinging back for the bruised liberals is Nation columnist Eric Alterman with his rebuttal book, What Liberal Media? Esquire had a few unbiased questions for him ESQ: Do you worry that engaging in a dialogue with Ann Coulter is a mistake? EA: Definitely. I debase myself every time I say her name. That’s why I said from the beginning that it’s gonna take a lot of money to get me to do this. ESQ:...

SEOUL, South Korea - New anti-U.S. posters have been put up along the streets of Pyongyang and other parts of North Korea (news - web sites) pledging to fight American "imperialists," the North's state-run media said Friday. Posters of "high ideological and artistic value" were made by North Korean artists shortly after the communist country withdrew from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty on Jan. 10, said the report by the North's Korean Central News Agency. "The works encourage the people's army and people of the DPRK in the confrontation with the U.S.," said the report, using the acronym for the North's...

It has been a year since George W. Bush announced the existence of an "axis of evil." The speechwriter who crafted that frightening phrase for last year’s State of the Union address, currently out marketing his memoir, has been unavailable to fashion the sequel. That leaves the President and his aides to figure out how he should explain American foreign policy. Specifically, he will have to tell Americans why his administration is preparing for war on Iraq, which has no nuclear weapons, and preparing for talks with North Korea, which probably has several and declares its determination to build more....

You’d think someone would cut CNN a break. After all, it’s the most substantive news source on television. In the past two years, its ratings have increased 40 percent. It makes a lot of money. And yet, all you ever hear about CNN is that Fox News is kicking its ass. The imminent departure of CNN chairman and CEO Walter Isaacson only emphasized CNN’s image problem. Isaacson, an author and journalist until he joined the channel two years ago, is leaving to join a think tank, apparently because he didn’t like the superficiality of television and hated commuting to Atlanta....
