Hatch: Tea Party movement threatening to tear GOP apart

American Fork » Sen. Orrin Hatch has a message for the Tea Party movement: Work with the GOP or see conservatives lose more ground. "If we fractionalize the Republican Party, we are going to see more liberals elected," Hatch warned a crowd of 300 at a town meeting at American Fork Junior High School on Wednesday night, amid jeers from Tea Party supporters. Hatch blamed extreme conservatives for the 2008 defeat of Sen. Gordon Smith, a politically moderate but fiscally conservative Republican from Oregon. Hatch said if the Tea Party had not backed a constitutionalist candidate in that race, Smith...

McClintock's refusal to consider budget earmarks hurts his district, critics say

As the federal budget season heats up, some Placer County officials are grumbling that Republican Rep. Tom McClintock's ideological opposition to congressional earmarks puts their constituents at a disadvantage. "It's already hurt us," Supervisor F.C. "Rocky" Rockholm said in a recent interview. McClintock said he will not seek congressional earmarks – budget requests made outside of the budget process. "I've made it very clear that I will fight for our district through the normal appropriations process," he said.

NC Port Closed After Containers are Punctured

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (AP) - Officials shut down a North Carolina port and urged people to leave the area Tuesday after nine containers with highly explosive materials were punctured. Morehead City Fire Chief Wes Lail told television station WTVD that the chemical involved is pentaerythritol tetranitrate, a powerful explosive. Authorities did not immediately say how big the containers were or how they were damaged.

The Wall Street Journal’s Kim Strassel profiles GOP up-and-comer Sean Duffy, a 38-year-old district attorney in Wisconsin who’s taking on decrepit Democrat incumbent Rep. David Obey. He’s bringing fresh blood and energy to the fight — and he’s focused on fiscal responsibility:

Hackers steal SKorean-US military secrets

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea's military said Friday it was investigating a hacking attack that netted secret defense plans with the United States and may have been carried out by North Korea. The suspected hacking occurred late last month when a South Korean officer failed to remove a USB device when he switched a military computer from a restricted-access intranet to the Internet, Defense Ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae said. The USB device contained a summary of plans for military operations by South Korean and U.S. troops in case of war on the Korean peninsula. Won said the stolen documents...

Hastings Would Override Gays-in-Military Law

Ineligible Witnesses Would Detract from Hearings Rep. Alcee Hastings, who is not a member of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), is sponsoring legislation that would harm the military and detract from planned hearings on the issue of gays in the military. The Hastings bill (H.R. 4180) would effectively suspend enforcement of Section 654, Title 10, U.S.C, which is usually mislabeled “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT). Hastings and 30 colleagues (only two of whom serve on the HASC) want to require the military to retain servicemembers who are homosexual, bisexual or transgendered, if they testify (or communicate with Congress) on...

The embattled Razzle Dazzle Czar (No Creche Display at the White House)

The embattled Razzle Dazzle Czar, White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers says that the Obamas were planning a "non-religious Christmas." According to the Sunday New York Times the confession emerged at a luncheon earlier this year with former White House social secretaries. The ladies must have choked on their Caesar salads when Rogers went on to announce that the Obamas did not intend to display the Christmas Creche--the manger scene that traditionally occupies a central spot in the East Room. (This revelation reportedly drew a gasp from the retired social secretaries). The idea was that the absence of the Creche...

Wimpy foreign policy never saved anyone's day

Barack Obama seems anxious to follow in the footsteps of the last century's most well-known appeasers, Chamberlain and Carter. And if our president were even half as smart as his billing has claimed, then he would know -- merely judging from these two -- that appeasers never win and their wimpy foreign policy never saved anyone's day. Quite the opposite, in fact.

A Conservative Reflection on Ted Kennedy

Political figures are said to be remembered in one line. George Washington was the father of his country. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves. Ronald Reagan won the Cold War without firing a shot. Ted Kennedy let a woman die at Chappaquiddick and tried to cover it up. If obituaries rightly remember the Massachusetts solon as America's third longest serving senator, they do history a disservice by downplaying why he served so long in the Senate and not a day in the White House.

Obama to invest in offshore oil drilling – in Brazil! Soros stands to reap dividends!

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Obama administration will invest $2 billion (or more) in drilling off the shores of Brazil, of all places. The left does all they can to keep us from exploring off our own shores. Yet we’re suddenly investing $2 billion – that we don’t have – in a Brazilian oil company?

Words of Wisdom

July, 2009 Dear Friends of Ignatius Productions, I recently became upset when Newsweek's "Without A Doubt" feature published an article by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend entitled, "Why Barack Obama represents American Catholics better than the pope does." She commend President Obama's "pragmatic approach to divisive policy" and his "social justice agenda." Meanwhile, she claims that the positions of the pope, the bishops and the pro-life activists do not. In fact, Townsend asserts that the Chicago community organizer president could teach the pope a lot about a Catholic approach to politics and the ability to listen to other people's points of view...
