  • Why (As A Sports Fanatic) I Can't Get Interested in Soccer

    07/02/2014 11:27:21 AM PDT · 50 of 117

    You’re wrong on almost every point. Soccer could use adjustments but not any of those ones you propose.

    {{ Adjustment #1: Dramatically shrink the size of the field. Make the field about half the size it is now. This will help increase the action in front of the goal. }}

    2 bad things will happen if this was done.
    —1. the game would become “Goalie Wars”. Goalies lobbing the ball back and forth hoping the opposing goalie makes a mistake and the ball goes in. The length of the field is very specific to avoid goalies being able to score on each other from their “drop kick”.
    —2. You don’t want more action in front of the goal. The more people and it becomes a scrum where the goals are accidental. No skill, just a bunch of wild kicking. The most exciting shots in Soccer are the long shots.

    {{ Adjustment #2: Increase the size of the goal. }}

    The width of a regulation goal is 18ft. A man standing in the middle can jump to either side and have a slim but possible chance of reaching either post. This encourages the wild and exciting jumping saves. Making it wider would change goal tending for the worse. More defenses packed in the goal to make up.

    However increasing the goal height by 6” might be possible. It would encourage more jumping by the goalie which is exciting. It would also encourage more long shots, also exciting.

    {{ Adjustment #3: Put sideboards up around the field so the ball doesn’t go out of bounds so much. }}

    No, No, No!.... Walls discourage teamwork and discourage running. Walls also allow the ball to be “trapped” leading to a lot of time where the defender and offensive player pretty much just stand there in a stand-off. MMA also suffers from this with their cages.

    {{ Adjustment #4: Allow hitting in soccer, like in ice hockey and lacrosse. }}
    Sports that allow hitting require pads. Pads hurt running and skill moves. Soccer doesn’t have pads and because there are no pads there aren’t problems with concussions that can end careers and lives.

    ... You need to learn what “Stoppage Time” is.
    ... You need to learn what “Set Plays” are.
    ... You need to learn why games ending in ties can be just as exciting as games ending in a win/loss.... [hint: world cup scoring is done as a tournament - you get points even for the ties, not win/lose like the playoffs or NCAA]

    You’re quite wrong! NFL players couldn’t play soccer on par with even the European club teams.

    Soccer is an extremely difficult sport to play because the your foot is the farthest thing from your brain, looking at your feet while you are running is also not practical. Therefore the majority of the touches in soccer are from muscle memory. To develop muscle memory, sports physiologists say it takes 10,000 hours to master a sport... just to touch the ball without having to use your brain.

    The problem isn’t with letting this 20k out... It’s why can’t we let out 40k. For decades now federal sentencing has been inhumanely severe. Virtual life sentences dealt out like candy for non-violent crimes.

    As a conservative I’m humiliated that our once proud Nation has put more people in prison than any other country on the planet. China, Russia? Nope - more people locked up and more per capita locked up in the “Land of the Free”. Disgusting.

    My point is that you need a more solid argument than souls or religion.

    While that might be your personal reason for opposing abortion, it isn’t good enough to base public policy on. The reason that there are many different religious beliefs, your example of Hindu’s from India is a good one.

    As a thought experiment, if technology could progress and in 1000 years we could block a a body from receiving a soul, for the purposes of abortion or growing body replacement parts for the parents... Under the “don’t kill it because it has a soul” basis, this would be medically ethical.

    That is why I do NOT base my opposition to abortion on religion.

    Liberals and many people don’t believe in souls.... Your argument falls short.

    Even if they developed a procedure where the baby felt no pain it would still be wrong.

    Life is defined medically in human beings as a beating heart. When your heart stops beating then you are declared dead. A fetus develops a heartbeat around age 3weeks. Abortion after 3 weeks is technically homicide according to the medical definitions.

    But we know brain activity also means Life. Week 4 is when the fetal brain divides into 5 parts and a flurry of brain activity can be seen.

    If Roe v Wade was decided today then abortions would be banned from Week 3/4 onward as they should be. Of course most women don’t learn they are pregnant until after this point so the Abortion Mills would be put out of business.

    I say let abortion be legal in week 1/2... When science devices a way to tell that early. Woman would have to wear a pregnancy alarm 24/7.

    In the vast majority of the country there is only 1 choice a person has if they want high-speed internet. In part of the country a person is lucky if they have 2-3 choices.

    But telco’s are a strange animal. In the front door they compete for customers but in the back door they are friends and partners. Yes AT$T, Veri$ion, Comca$t & Time-Warner all have agreements on the backend about how much each will pay the other to leverage their networks and even how those networks will be operated.

    MONOPOLIES, especially ones that lease government owned (aka owned by you and I) airwaves, do need oversight and regulation.

    We have all discovered that in the 1980’s $3 a minute long distance rates were a scam. How much money did the telco’s steal from your parent’s back then? Long Distance eventually became “commoditized”. The Telco’s learned their lesson from that disaster. Mobile phone service and internet should go the way of Long-Distance... But that doesn’t happen. WHY not?

    So 2 women living together who never have sex but are otherwise “a couple” raising one of the women’s children is ok?

    Men and women have been having deviate sexual behavior with members of the same sex for thousands of years. But what has been occurring in the western world for the last 30 years is brand new. Never before have gays attempted to simulate a heterosexual family so openly and completely.

    Liberals cannot destroy our society without replacing it with nothing. Their drive for “equality” is the first step. Convince our children that gay families are equal to straight families. The next step is supremacy.

    Focus on the family.

    I think conservatives are too distracted by the sexual perversion angle that makes Homosexuality evil...

    If it was just deviate sexual behavior then many conservatives that fall on the libertarian spectrum of the ideology wouldn’t have a problem. I’m solidly conservative and a christian but my own sexual behavior is probably not something I could pass any conservative litmus tests on.

    The problem with Homosexuality is actually NOT their sexual behavior. It is everything else:
    Convincing the world that children don’t need both a mother and a father being the greatest societal poison.
    Gay’s want to adopt and/or convert mothers and fathers in normal heterosexual relationships & families to turn to homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle when the normal marriage is on the rocks. All most all children raised by Gay’s are from one of the partners previous straight marriage.
    Gay’s prey on failed straight marriages because it is their easiest route to children.

    This really is about the children.

    “There is a maximally efficient way to design a piece of software”

    This isn’t at all true. There are so many different ways to go about software design that efficient code or operation is a secondary concern to many many other factors. I can design the same piece of software in .NET, JAVA, C etc. What database, what middleware etc etc... Once you have all that put down and you’re actually writing code do you go pure Object Oriented or Procedural, maybe a hybrid?

    I can write some incredibly efficient code, but it would be unreadable and barely maintainable. Familiar with really long Regex anyone? So most software engineers balance efficiency with maintainability.

    Bottom line is Software design is not a Science, it’s an Art.

    The normalization of homosexual behavior will come. Teens are being brainwashed and now publicly declare themselves gay or bisexual in school assemblies on diversity. It’s sick but last month my daughter’s school paraded all the kids who claimed to be gay or whatever in a “celebrate diversity” assembly. The kids onstage was a who’s who of the most mentally ill / frequently suicidal kids in the school.

    In 20 years we will have a number of adults who used to be homosexual but found their own way out. This country will be full of people who know first hand the lie that people “are born that way”. One day people will know homosexuality is nothing more than a chosen behavior, and one incompatible with a normal happy life.

    Lets get specific:

    In 2012 nearly half (48.3%) of all drug arrests were for marijuana — a total of 749,825.

    Now go and Google the lethal dose for marijuana vs alcohol. Do you think a father should be imprisoned for consuming a beer at his backyard summer BBQ? A drug that does kill people merely from consumption alone.

    Our country is arresting and jailing a huge number of people over this. Think about it. 750k cases all involving tens of thousands of lawyers, courts, cops, jails, judges... over what?
    Billions of dollars are spent on this each year. Why?
    Over a drug that can’t kill a person?

    For the record even if marijuana was legal I wouldn’t do it. But my neighbor having the freedom to consume it would bother me about as much as a neighbor who smoked nicotine.

    As a conservative I want to see less jails, less prisoners and families intact. I want to see people (as flawed as they might be) free to chose both good and bad.

    There are very good reasons US airlines tend to never buy secondhand planes from companies like Malaysia Airlines. Their planes are bare bones to begin with and definitely not maintained to FAA nor manufacturer’s specs.

    We already know MAS opted out of the Boeing Jet-Data Services. There is no way MAS brought their plane in for annual maintenance and asked Boeing to retrofit it with BUAP.

But lets say Boeing secretly installed it during it’s last avionics servicing. Why then was the transponder switched off by someone in the cockpit? Or are you saying that BUAP can switch the ACARS transponder off too? Personally I don’t know if BUAP is capable of that.

    Yes, all software has bugs and unplanned for / untested “edge cases”. However this particular aircraft doesn’t need the computer to fly and it can be switched off.

    The transponder is an isolated piece of equipment on the 777. It isn’t linked to any other digital system in cockpit. So a flight computer going bad couldn’t impact the transponder in anyway.
