AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine's governor pardoned a dog set to be euthanized after killing a smaller dog. But a judge has ordered the dog still be euthanized, saying the governor doesn't have the power to pardon a dog. The 4-year-old husky-mix lived in Winslow with Matthew Perry. Last spring she got out and killed a neighbor's small dog. A judge ordered Perry to keep Dakota fenced in, on a leash and muzzled when out for walks. Authorities say he violated that order. Dakota got out again and attacked the same family's "new" dog, biting it in the neck. Republican Gov....

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio man set for trial this week for an arson fire that killed a girl he was accused of raping and her grandparents has jumped to his death from a fourth-floor balcony at a courthouse. The Youngstown Vindicator reports a reporter from the newspaper watched 48-year-old Robert Seman Jr. launch himself Monday morning from the balcony inside the Mahoning County Courthouse in Youngstown. Seman faced the death penalty if he'd been convicted of aggravated murder charges in the March 2015 deaths of 10-year-old Corrine Gump, 63-year-old William Schmidt and 61-year-old Judith Schmidt.

Arabs on social media are showering US President Donald Trump with thanks and praise after he ordered the first direct US military action against Syrian government forces. The US conducted the strikes on a Syrian air base in the early hours of Friday following a suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town. Shortly after, some Arab social media users started referring to the president as Abu Ivanka - Father of Ivanka, as a sign of respect and endearment. Others referred to him as Abu Ivanka al-Amreeki - Father of Ivanka the American, complete with a religious beard.

It’s that time of the month and all you want to do is stay in bed. If you are a woman employed in Italy, you might soon get to do that if you can prove you suffer from painful periods. The Italian parliament is considering a bill that would require employers grant women three days of paid leave every month, according to the Washington Post. To qualify for menstrual leave, the Post said, women would need a certificate from a medical specialist. The bill, which says that between 60 and 90 per cent of women suffer from painful periods, was...

PITTSBURGH - One officer was injured and several windows were broken during a protest Monday night outside of the Allegheny County Jail. Officials said jail staff called 911 to report a group of about 20-25 protesters outside the jail throwing rocks, sticks and firing fireworks. Protesters were wearing all black with black masks. Protesters reportedly broke a jail employee’s car window and the window out of a sheriff deputy’s cruiser. The first officers to arrive were on bicycle. One officer got into a scuffle with protestors and injured his shoulder. He is being treated for the injury. Police say the...

In January 2012, Melissa Dohme was rushed to a hospital after her ex-boyfriend stabbed her 32 times in the neck, arms, face and hands. According to her Facebook page, she flat-lined four times at the hospital after the attack. Cameron Hill was one of the EMTs who saved her after the attack. The two met again later that year, in October and went on their first date in December. Hill proposed to Dohme at a Tampa...

I filed my tax return in early February, the old fashioned way, by mail. I've done this for several years running with no problem. I checked the status of the refund on the site, which indicated that my refund was to be direct deposited to my account on February 27. Well, that date came and went with no deposit to my account. I double-checked the routing and account numbers on my return, and they apparently were correct. Last week, I checked the IRS site again, and now it read that my bank had rejected the deposit so they were...

The State Department legal office prepared a four-page memo for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warning of the dangers of leaking by State Department employees. It promptly leaked, to me. That’s only the latest sign that the relationship between the Trump administration political appointees and the State Department professional workforce is still very much a work in progress. The Feb. 20 memo by State Department acting legal adviser Richard Visek to Tillerson is entitled “SBU: Protecting Privileged Information.” The SBU stands for Sensitive But Unclassified, a designation used on documents that are not technically secret but also not supposed to...

Reports are surfacing about a potential national strike by immigrants this week—the latest in a growing movement to highlight the role immigrants play in the face of Donald Trump’s increasingly harsh crackdown. According to Washingtonian magazine, a number of local restaurants and other businesses have begun bracing for a national strike on February 16, in which immigrants—particularly those from Latinx communities—have been urged to stay home from work. The grassroots protest has seemingly been organized by word of mouth and across Latinx social media channels. “One of our delivery men who’s Latino told our kitchen about it, and then it...

The statement said the hacking attempt was unsuccessful and stressed that "it appeared there were no terrorist motives."

In a strange moment of startling symmetry with the current state of American politics, C-SPAN—the public affairs network that regularly broadcasts proceedings of the United States House of Representatives and Senate—was interrupted by a broadcast of Russia Today. The state-funded Russian news network briefly took over the online feed of C-SPAN1, which had been broadcasting a discussion in Congress regarding the Securities and Exchange Commission Regulatory Accountability Act. As California Democrat Maxine Waters was speaking, the feed suddenly cut from the House floor to a broadcast of RT. The feed cut in with a commercial break before returning to the...

ExxonMobil has lost a key battle in an investigation into whether the oil giant misled the public about the dangers of climate change. A Massachusetts judge ordered Exxon (XOM) on Wednesday to hand over more than four decades of the company's climate change research. The court rejected Exxon's emergency motion to kill the demand from Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, who is investigating allegations the company ignored internal scientific research going back to the 1970s. The ruling came on the same day that longtime Exxon boss Rex Tillerson was being grilled by Congress about the company's climate change tactics at...
