    History largely remembers him as Corp. Francis Pegahmagabow — the deadliest sniper and scout of the First World War, credited with 378 kills and 300 captures. And on Tuesday, National Aboriginal Day, a life-sized bronze monument of Pegahmagabow was unveiled in Parry Sound, Ont., almost 100 years after he earned his first medal for courage in battle. The monument: Pegahmagabow standing defiantly with an eagle perched on one arm; his right hand in a fist; a Ross rifle slung over his shoulder; a caribou at his feet to represent his clan.

    Canadian warplanes and special forces helped Kurdish troops fight off a significant Islamic State ground offensive in northern Iraq, a Canadian general revealed Thursday night. Major-Gen. Charles Lamarre said Islamic State forces launched a “fairly concentrated and well co-ordinated attack” on Wednesday on the Kurdish lines where Canadian special forces are located. The fighting went throughout the night and Kurdish troops, backed by the Canadians, were able to push back the attackers by Thursday.

    A flypast involving about 40 Spitfires and Hurricanes is taking place to commemorate the 75th anniversary of World War Two's Battle of Britain. The grouping - the biggest in one place since the war - took off in waves from Goodwood airfield in West Sussex before dispersing around the region. Prince Harry was due to take part, but gave up his seat for a battle veteran when one of the Spitfires was grounded.

    MONTREAL - Quebec's French-language newspapers published a cartoon of Prophet Mohammed on Thursday in solidarity with Paris's Charlie Hebdo, where Muslim terrorists massacred 12 people the previous day. It shows a bearded man, clad head-to toe-in black, crying with his head in his hands. The headline reads: "Mohammed overwhelmed by fundamentalists" with the Muslim prophet saying: "It's hard being loved by jerks."

    HMCS Toronto crew members are being hailed as heroes after rescuing people from a fire while on shore leave in Turkey. “Six members of the crew provided first response to a fire and assisted in the evacuation of the building, saving lives,” the Department of National Defence said. It all happened in Antalya, Turkey, on Friday. The crew were in a restaurant when a fire broke out. Trained in fire fighting and first responding, they went to work.
