  • Delegate Math: Here's How a Contested Convention Could Happen

    03/04/2016 12:36:14 PM PST · by Sparticus · 37 replies
The delegate math is becoming increasingly clear: The March 15 Florida and Ohio contests will determine if Donald Trump is the sure-to-be Republican nominee or if there's a contested GOP convention. And there doesn't appear to be any other possibility, given that the nominee needs to win 1,237 delegates to win a majority....
  • Republicans Are Handling The Supreme Court Vacancy All Wrong. Here's Why.

In the aftermath of the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, Republicans have set upon a strategy for preventing a politically-driven justice from replacing Scalia and turning the Court’s conservative-leftist split into a permanent leftist majority. Their strategy: stating that they will not approve anyone nominated by President Obama. Virtually all the Republican presidential candidates have called on Obama not to nominate anyone to fill Scalia’s vacancy, explaining that he’s in the last year of his tenure and that it would be irregular to try to cram through a lifetime appointment before leaving office. “The American people should have a voice...
  • Which John Wayne and WWII movie to introduce my kids to westerns and classic American films.

So I was watching a movie with my kids (10 and 13) the other day and was thinking about how different the media is that they consume than from the stuff I was raised on. I would like to get them interested in older movies with positive messages. Which John Wayne and which WWII movies are your favorites and which would think would grab kids' attention? I'm thinking "The Cowboys" would be good, but what else would everyone suggest?

Prominent immigration advocates have all but conceded that federal judge Andrew Hanen a staunch critic of the Obama administrations immigration policies will block the presidents executive actions just weeks before the measures are slated to kick in....We all think the judge is going to rule in favor of the plaintiffs here. That much is almost assumed at this point, said Marshall Fitz, vice president of immigration policy at the Center for American Progress.

Last month, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released abortion figures for the year 2010. The data indicates that the national abortion rate continues its 20 year decline. The number of abortions performed declined by 3 percent between 2009 and 2010. This decline is fairly consistent across the country. The number of abortions went down in 36 of the 44 states that reported data to the CDC. Furthermore, there was no strong regional variation in the decline. The decline in southern states was actually slightly less than the national average. The abortion decline was nearly equal in red states and...

The European parliament is lining up Edward Snowden to give evidence by video link this month, in spite of resistance by British Conservatives, a Green MEP has announced. Jan Philipp Albrecht, a German Green MEP, said parliamentarians wanted Snowden to appear before the assembly's committee on civil liberties, justice and home affairs (LIBE). Albrecht said it would represent a great success for the parliament's investigation into mass surveillance of EU citizens. He said: "Half a year after the first publications from his collection of numerous NSA documents, the truth of which has not so far been refuted, there are still...

On PBSs NewsHour on Friday night, New York Times columnist David Brooks warned that Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and similar legislators rise to prominence threatens the traditional Republican Party. Brooks insists the motives of Cruz are less about legislation and policy and more about the politics of undermining the Republican establishment. Whats going on in the House, and a bit in the Senate, too, is what you might call the rise of Ted Cruz-ism, Brooks said. And Ted Cruz, the senator from Canada through Texas, is basically not a legislator in the normal sense, doesnt have an idea that...

WASHINGTON President Barack Obama has chosen Robert M. Groves to be the next census director, turning to a professor who supports the use of statistical sampling and has clashed with Republicans to lead the high-stakes head count. The White House will announce the selection of Groves later Thursday, according to a Commerce Department official who demanded anonymity because the individual was not authorized to speak before the official announcement. Groves is a former Census Bureau associate director of statistical design, serving from 1990-92. He has spent decades researching ways to improve survey response rates. If confirmed by the Senate,...
