If men and women are equal, why do women have a choice about combat and men have none? When my son enlisted, he didn’t have a “choice” about going into combat. just one more way to cause resentment.
One way to get women out of the service is to make it totally equal... Selective service.... Combat assignments for all. Treat the women just like the men and we’ll see how many Enlist. But the politicians will insist on quotas and 125 lb women will be able to carry less than the guys in order to be fair. Between this and the rules of engagement . Our military is being destroyed

It appears that different stories are being “leaked”...Hannity had information that is quite different from what is being “leaked” here. What Romney should focus on is Obama’s handling of the crisis....when did he talk PERSONALLY with his National security council? Axlerod would not answer a direct question about this. If he is saying he identified the attack as “terror,” why not meet with State and CIA, etc. to nail it down?
We know the answer....he went to Las Vega...he “phoned” it in like he does everything...

FOrtunately, Mitt seems to be moving fast on these mis-statements about the economy so that he puts Bammy on the defensive.
I have to say, Mitt’s approach is a lot better than McCain’s.

I got the same impression about the lawyers after watching the press conference...don’t be fooled by reading only the headlines. They were very forceful in their belief that Zimmerman should NOT be charged and had taken on the case pro bono UNLESS charges were filed against him. I definitely got the sense that they are worried about him...no contact with them for two days. They mentioned several times that he has a bounty on his head..that he cannot seek help from anyone because he can be recognized AND because there have been death threats. They felt they had to announce that they were no longer representing him because ETHICALLY they cannot continue to represent someone who is out of contact with them, but they believe in his case and would continue helping him if HE chooses to contact them.
I don’t blame them at all...and I can’t imagine the hell that Zimmerman is going through.

True...but if you look at the letters written by soldiers of all ranks from the Civil War period, the vocabulary was still impressive even when written to family members. For that reason, I did enjoy the vocabulary and Mattie’s diction in the Coen script. But you’re right about informal speech; for example, contractions would not have been used in letter writing, but they no doubt were used in speech.

Still, I think the Coen movie is closer to the novel’s dialogue, but John Wayne still was the best Rooster Cogburn. Jeff Bridges did a decent job, but the Duke was better. THe girl in the Coen version is excellent especially for her age.

From what I understand, the “formal” language seen in the Coen movie was put in because it is closer to the novel...in reality, it is truer to how people would have spoken at the time...a look at the letters from that time period shows that even the least educated (by today’s standards; they didn’t go beyond 8th grade usually) spoke and wrote MUCH better than most students today.

Thanks for the links and comments about Abbott! You are right....this will do to Colorado what Abbott did to New Jersey. In NJ, Abbott schools swim in money with technologies that my supposedly “affluent” district here can only dream of. For example, an audit of Camden City schools showed that money has been misspent to the tune of BILLIONS...security guards raking in 100,000 plus salaries, non-existant jobs paying out thousands in which the person never showed up to work...one item was the cost of a copier system for a school. A purchase order was paid for close to a million plus dollars, and they had NO idea where the money went!!!! The audit said the school paid 100 times what the going rate was.
In the meantime, my boss (I teach in a school here) tells me that we can’t afford to buy enough books for my honors class and our taxes keep going up. IN Abbott schools, each room has a smart board, iPads are soon coming,..you name it.

I think that if Romney had come out and said that Romneycare was an attempt by the state to work out the healthcare problem..but that it has proved to NOT work as envisioned, I think it would be better. Same with amnesty...we tried that in 1986 and the hope was that they would seal the border...didn’t happen. Flip-flopping on policy is not so bad IF the candidate explains why he has changed his position. The problem with Romney is the pro-life and other moral issues...his church has traditionally taken pro-life views BUT he has not...now THAT’S a flip-flop that is hard to accept.

I love Sarah Palin, but her indecision about getting in while there is a debate coming up this week is a real problem for me. I know that there are those who say that she has been up front about her beliefs, and she has! But the rest of the American people have a skewed view of her, and she is going to need the debates and other venues to fight that slander that the MSM have used against her so effectively. For all their rants against Rick Perry, Sarah supporters should always remember that she campaigned for Rick Perry. I would venture to say that she helped put him in the position of running for president. SO the Perry hate-fest gets a bit thick here.

If she gets in, the the primary gets pretty dicey and interesting...and as long as we don’t go third party, then I say let the best candidate win. Let Sarah show her stuff...but it better be soon or she’ll begin to lose admirers like me.

Even the news reports made mention of the fact that the debates had been set up for months...the sinker for Obama was when an unidentified Dem congressmen complained about not giving enough time.

I am a public school teacher in New Jersey...and yes, there are conservative teachers however, not many. If I do not join the union, I have to pay 85% of union dues regardless. Members in our union are beginning to wake up to the “cozy” deal that union representatives have (an additional prep period during the school day, additional salary, etc) and the lack of oversight on a union that collects millions in dues. Members are beginning to question how the dues are being spent AND the huge salaries of the union officials. I believe that if schools in Wis. and New Jersey were to have votes to decertify, many district teachers would vote them out. What Walker and Christie have done is shine a light on public union thuggery and malfeasance. The hateful and over-the-top union protests are simply proving their point.

The Republicans should ask how it is that Obama...who said that he needed to be elected because we were suffering from near Depression levels...can now say it was worse than he thought? His whole rationale for his “stimulus” was that the economy was near-depression levels, so what could have been worse? The “not shovel ready” stimulus will AGAIN be not shovel ready since what he is proposing is the same thing that has already failed. It’s just another slush fund to pay back the unions and his other cronies.

OF course if Obummer really wanted to get the economy moving, he would get rid of regulations (instead of adding thousands more) and most importantly get rid of the spectre of Obamacare, but he only wants it to LOOK like the economy is getting better so he can get reelected to finish his job of ruining this country.

Obama truly believed that he could push Obamacare first because historically, recessions “bounce back” and he would not have to pay politically. Of course, he is too stupid to realize that his policies would actually prevent the economy from rebounding.

This is something I have also mentioned in my high school classes. When people try to say it is not a good analogy, I argue the following:

of course it’s analagous. In school, some students just have an easier time learning; some are gifted with more talent and intelligence; but most who succeed in school are those who work exceptionally hard especially when things might not come easy for them. The same is true for high income earners. Some are truly gifted at making money; some have special talents that put them at the head of the line, some begin with money which puts them at an natural advantage, but the great majority work exceptionally hard for their income.

Remember that even the term “Tea Party” was first talked about by CNBC’s Santelli in the terms of FISCAL policy...not a thing about the Christian right. Certainly Christian conservatives have jumped on board; however, the people who turned up at the 9/12 event in Washington focused on returning to Constitutional government. FIrst, the left called us “racists” and “angry white men” until conservatives like Alan West and Michele Bachman put a lie to that. So they have to go to the next way to divide the movement. Attack the old standby “CHristian RIght” It’s pathetic!

This is an easy one to diffuse...IF the republicans define the tea party as it truly is. What’s so wrong with wanting smaller and more efficient government that doesn’t waste our money?? The WH is desperate..Obama reminds me of Napoleon in Animal Farm who kept blaming “Snowball” for everything as Napoleon drank and partied and lived like a king!

Cohen is simply revealing what East-coast liberals believe in their hearts... I know because I am a transplanted Mid-westerner in their midst (New Jersey). I had a conversation with a colleague who bemoaned the lack of intelligence and culture of those in the “flyover” country. I explained to her that I was raised in Ohio and that I found her comments not only offensive but wrong and “elitist”. She backed down immediately, but she—like Cohen and Obama—believe their superiority over the “masses”...that will never change.
