In an interview Friday, U.S. Army private Scott Thomas Beauchamp’s wife Elspeth Reeve, a former reporter-researcher at The New Republic, told the Observer that she was excited when someone at the magazine assigned her to fact-check one of her husband’s dispatches from Iraq.

“I was like, ‘Sweet! I can talk to Scott on TNR’s dime!’” Ms. Reeve said.

Ms. Reeve was working at TNR when Mr. Beauchamp–whose articles described soldiers killing dogs and mocking wounded civilians–was accused by critics of fabricating some of his material.

Mr. Foer has since written and published a 7,000-word piece retracting Mr. Beauchamp’s articles for TNR, noting that assigning Ms. Reeve to fact-check her husband’s work was a mistake.

You have to know the real definition of inflation. Too much printed or invented money facing relatively fewer goods (prices then rise)
Your “tomato inflation” is a price change due to the cold winter in Mexico not printed money.

We have true inflation; but changes in prices due to changing demand or supply are market signals. Look for wage and price controls to put the lid on the boiling pot. Then we will have no market signals and repressed “price inflation”, caused by the printing of money.

Interesting story about Webb. Back in his Reagan days he helped a manufacturer of ball bearings (may have broke the law) Seems their ball bearings were the only ones that were used by our nuclear subs. Because of the Dems in congress they lost all contracts and were down to executives manning the shop floor, getting ready to close. Webb shuffled some contracts (without the proper bidding process) to them to keep them going until saner heads prevailed. Typical DEM logic was that we could buy the bearings overseas cheaper. Only problem they were made by a communist country and we would have to give them the exact specs on their manufacture.
I always wonder what turned him to the dark side. I heard he has a very liberal wife. She is a survivor of communism so I doubt it, but others might verify this..

Harry Truman was purported to be the last presidential candidate that did the railroad campaign. Speaking from the back of the train, the same speech was given to every stop on the way. Local papers did not care to take the time to see the same thing was said at each stop. Earlier in our history these railroad campaigns had the same promised factory , road or bridge. Again the media did not know nor did complain. Today liberals especially Obama have it the same way only they use the MSM to cover for them. Same promises same lies. Not contradicted by the MSM. Along comes the Internet, talk radio and cable news (Fox especially)

This is one of the reasons why I was once a libertarian. On immigration they do not know the tenants of libertarianism.
First, no, nada, no aid for anyone. Illegal immigrants under libertarians would be welcome if they received no government support. Since this is not true libertarians who support illegals are obviously ignorant of libertarian philosophy. Immigration is fine with no aid. While I rant, lets talk about free trade. Another libertarian issue. First if I remember my Spooner, Knock (SP) and Rothbard you can not trade with slave economies (China, Cuba et al are good examples) If you trade with a state (or person for that matter )that steals the property (forced labor) you. are as guilty as the state or person doing it. Thus to espouse libertarianism you must be against any, I repeat any trade with Mainland China or any group or country that steals others property because they accept and benefit from slave labor or what might be called socialistic robbery ; either by acquiescence or outright profit. Libertarianism is a gran idea but to truly follow it you would need to go to Galt’s Gulch.

It’s much more involved than just lack of learning or experience. Take today Keyesians: they now support tax increases something no Keynesian would ever consider in a depression.. Lack of education? I think not. The Wesley Mouch’s of today’s Universities have done their job well. Radicals of the 60’s went into the colleges and went underground. Perverting everything they touched. First being happy just to get tenure. With that accomplished they set out to do the real work of undermining our values and ideals. Washington, family, life, free market, even the Sainted Keynes were repackaged: redefining them all . Diminishing them making them seem to be against society instead of its foundations. Planned? Conspiracy? Who cares? It still was done. What we have are bankers, lawyers, brokers, teachers and others who think its all dog eat dog. Get them before they get you. Income over ethics. A “Free Market” that means fraud and theft are the norm. Why not do it everyone else does. This is the ethos of those in command today. The purge may never come unless it is from the left, but then wasn’t that Wesley Mouch’s grand plan? Bubble? Bust?

Do you blame those who did not believe in a Market economy or those who did, but sold out? Nixon closed the Gold Window, instituted wage and price controls. He knew better.
Bush knew better. Most of Wall Street knew better. Yet they succumbed. Why?
Democrats aka Socialists never believed, they see all wealth creation as theft. Are they at fault or those of us who knew better but looked the other way? Remember when Blue Chip and bond clippers were real words? People and stockholders stayed with a company out of loyalty and were rewarded for it. Slowly things changed, borrowing and lending became a science (derivatives), risk became an illusion. Loyalty to company, to employee, to stock, to return, ended. “Growth” became king. Savings and Loans, dotcoms, Bobby Baker, Bearn Sterns Aig, Enron, No particular order, same result. People saw risk as something that could be assumed away. No risk, no real market, a socialists dream. Well we have backed onto a cliff with no way safely down. A market solution is viewed by all as too extreme. We need to help the market by lowering risk again. By risk we hope to return to what was before. Wait what was before? Ah yes we eliminated risk. WE will the go forward. To what? Not to defend the banks, but not enough info is given here to make a sound judgment on these banks lending policies.
If no Tarp funds were given how much would lending have been?
I think we can safely conclude not more lending.
If the reserves of banks fell as enormously as we have been led to believe isn‘t a fall of 1.4% relatively small? We were told many of these banks might fail (ie make no loans) or be drastically affected (again a decrease in lending )
If our GDP has fallen by 5 % (some say this will happen) is a decrease in lending of 1.4% actually more robust then it might have been?
Also one must now consider risk. Where it was deemphasized before (risky loans were made) it is now king. With companies in decline and caps down, companies are now riskier to lenders.
Does on want risky loans to be made as before? Have we learned anything?
    Now back to TARP
Necessary? That is another topic. It is a reality , However.

( Please be advised it has been a long time since I read Rothbard)
Though I am not a libertarian; Rothbard, a Austrian Economist who was very very libertarian espoused something like the following. The rules of the market are self enforced. If you lie cheat or steal no one will do business with you unless you put your product or money upfront. No good reputation -no business.

Libertarianism aside, rules of the game for the market are not complex or need to be socialistic. Enforce legal contracts : Penalize those who lie, cheat or steal and no one is to be externally harmed by their enforcement.

Respect the contract no matter what the size or power of the participants. Have a judicial system that enforces contracts and rights in the contract and not one that creates them.

The more intervention you allow, the more you need. The result is a Fettered “Market” no longer free no longer a market. Interference breeds interference.

Hayek is best on this, see a chapter in his Road To Serfdom, titled Why the Worst get On Top. The failure of intervention can also be explained by another book by Hayek, The Constitution Of Liberty. Here and in other books he argues that all knowledge like that exists in the Market can not be known and controlled by the few.

Interventionists argue that with computers and more perfect knowledge, intervention and control will work and work well.

Arrogance is bred by this belief.

Look at the crisis’ that exist today in the financial sector.

They thought they had obviated risk and overcome the laws of the “Market” with derivates and other “financial instruments”.

    They not the “Market” failed.

We were at the end of History, we had the cure for recessions and that dreaded Depression. We put a man on the moon. Solving the Market was easy. Pass a few laws, add more when needed.

Eliminate risk by spreading it so far that none knew the risk of the paper they held and when all else fails change the rules and or bail them out.

Socialism will not allow failure to proceed.

It does not accept it for ideological or just political reasons.

Thus Marx is made to look right.

capitalism (yes a small c) has an inherent flaw. It will fail. Only socialism (interventionism) will work. A New World Order will result. And we all will be free of the fetters of the market.

Only later will we note how we are poorer for it.

Free market to an Austrian is an oxymoron. Markets are free. A “regulated market” is never a Market.

When regulated, government must interfere more and more to keep the “regulated market “ going. More intervention followed by more intervention breeds an eventual breakdown.

Keynes thesis of: In the Long Run we will be dead is “coming home to roost”

We are at the end of the long run and now are paying the piper. Failures of regulated markets are the proof of Austrian Economics.

Austrian theory was not a Utopian system (like socialism) where the economy rolls along unblemished by recession.
The least understood and most important reason we need a Market Economy (Austrian) is dealing with failure.
The economy needs to rid itself of failed parts just as the body needs to rid itself of wastes.

Socialism or intervention by any other name cannot part with its failures. Politics is as important if not more important than profit.

True Capitalism’s crowning but unheralded achievement is knowing when to say stop. We are losing money; we must revamp, sell out or close. From these ashes other industries learn from the mistakes of those preceding it. Socialism subsidizes and tries to continue on with the existing system.

Our present economy is not a Market. Intervention is everywhere. The Regulators can no longer cope. Their answer: a new form of regulation.

To quote Richard Nixon,” We are all Keynesians now”
    God help us all

Surely Reid promised to match the bid. Why else would one take credit for the sliming of RUSH? Maybe if we all congratulate Ried on his obvious scheme to raise money for a worthwhile charity he will make a quick payment to th fund. (sarcasm off)

Designer from 40 yrs ago is probably dead. Blame him. Firm that built bridge has new personal and that did not build bridge. Blame them. State and Local officals who saw bridge every day and saw reports on its condition, did not do enough. Don’t blame them. Take monies alloted to transportation and build a new camp ground and name it after A representative from Congress a Former Mayor or City Councilman, go blameless. Same happened in New Orleans and happens all over US regardless of party affiliation.
