Heh. If he was in Wyoming, the only question he'd probably get is: ".223 or .308?"

If lots of people carry, it's no big deal and everyone behaves themselves. It's a concept gun-grabbers just don't get.

I think that was the wrong way to address the issue.

Every LEO has the discretion to decide where his time is best spent, under the direction of his leadership. In other words, enforcing such laws might just be such a low priority for this county that they never quite get around to it. What with all the actual crime going on that they need to address and all...

Stop-and-frisk is a return to pre-1960's law enforcement actions. Do you really think think the country was one vast gulag before Mirandization and all the other criminal-friendly Federal court rulings starting in the 1960's?

You continue to ignore the core issue of my posts, which is incrementalism. I assume it's because you have no response to offer.

I've never claimed that stop-and-frisk equals a "vast gulag", but that violation of civil rights by the government to any degree should be stopped. The courts ruled correctly in this matter, stopping "unreasonable searches and seizures".

You apparently have only two answers to all the disagreement thrown your way: 1) Stop and frisk isn't as draconian as X. (Where X= vast gulag, etc.), and 2) regardless of whether stop-and-frisk is constitutional or not, it reduces crime, so it's OK.

So, to directly answer your apparent claims:

    1) The degree of wrong doesn't alter the basic fact of wrong. Because aggravated murder is worse than armed robbery, it does not follow that armed robbery is OK. Because stop-and-frisk is not a "vast gulag", it does NOT follow that stop-and-frisk is OK.

    2) This is simply an "ends justify the means" argument, and it's just as wrong in this incarnation. The fact that stop-and-frisk decreases crime does NOT change its basic nature as a violation of the "unreasonable searches and seizures" guarantee of the constitution. It's wrong, and LEOs should NOT be allowed to do it.

Have a look at San Diego crime stats from before the 60's, and you'll see a pretty distinct trend.

You ignored my entire post. Nice job.

Simply lowering crime is NOT a legitimate reason for unconstitutional civil rights violations. Lots of heavy-handed and oppressive policies could result in lower crime, would you be OK with all of them, so long as crime decreased?

Another fact for you to chew on: Far greater atrocities have been committed by governments and their agents than by all other, non-government crime combined!

Keeping the government under control is way more important than lowering crime, if you look at the big picture. That's why the Constitution is all about controlling government and not about crime.

The gun laws in NYC being what they are, stop-and-frisk is an excellent way to prevent crime.

Random full-out home raids would be another excellent way to prevent crime. They could roll some dice to choose the house, fire flash-bangs into the living room, kick down the door and spend a few hours doing a thorough search and seizure raid! Just think of all the criminals they would round up!

They wouldn't KILL anyone, at least not intentionally, so it should be OK right?

The point is that it's the act, no matter how small, that's wrong. It's prohibited by the Constitution.

Government abuses nearly always start small and grow slowly over time. Stop and frisk isn't as severe as other things they could do, but it is absolutely an abuse of power.

Are those who have been stopped to be frisked free to refuse and walk away? No. If a young mother who had nothing at all to hide, but was in a hurry to get home to a sick child, was stopped by LEOs like this, she would be arrested and thrown in jail for a few days just the same if she tried to refuse and keep running home.

Don't fall for the well-worn tool of incrementalism! Evil administered one teaspoon at a time is STILL EVIL.

I like whales. I don’t kill and eat puppies or kitties either.

Whether you like whales, puppies or kitties, killing any of them for legitimate reasons is not immoral. By legitimate, I mean food, clothing, population control, etc..

In contrast, the people on the whaling vessels are people. They have the right to eat, to feed their families and to make a living. Side with people over animals.

Cute and furry or ugly and slimy, an animal is still an animal, and whales aren't pets. Attempts to "protect" them are utterly absurd. They don't need our "protection" because there are lots of them and the ocean is a very, very big place.

(P.S. I have no problem with those who legitimately kill puppies and kitties for population control either. Happens on farms and ranches all the time. Animals aren't people.)

Threats, intimidation, harassment, illegal boarding, assault, destruction of property, etc. on people engaged in a legitimate, legal activity is immoral.

I have to disagree with your definitions... Maybe I'm off base, but here's what understand for these words:

Pistol = Handgun : Type of firearm designed to be fired with one or both hands, held away from the body.

Revolver: A type of pistol/handgun which uses a revolving cylinder to hold -- typically 6 -- cartridges.

Semi-automatic: A type of pistol/handgun fed by a magazine. (There are semi-auto rifles and shotguns too...)

My reason for the breakdown I use: There were pistols way before either the revolver or the semi-auto handgun were invented. Single-shot smoothbore handguns have been called "pistols" since the 1500's, so in my mind the word is synonymous with "handgun".

    Just my $0.02 worth...

Doesn’t the House have a rule that require that every bill introduced have as part of it proof that it is constitutional?

That's already been settled by past SCOTUS decisions. It's covered by emanations from the penumbra of the Commerce Clause, just like liberal legislation has been for at least my lifetime.

The Constitution has been a joke to Democrats for many years, and nobody in Washington has enough spine to do a thing about it. Oaths of office to the contrary are nothing but a bitter joke now.

It appeals to Americans' ingrained sense that everyone should be treated fairly. It is memorialized in the Constitution's 14th Amendment, which guarantees to each person equality under the law.

The equality argument has been so persuasive...

    Gah!!!!

The "equality argument" is a lie, and they know it.

With regards to marriage, everyone is equal already! Every American has the right to marry another person of the opposite sex. That is equality. Arguments to the contrary are pushing the wolf of marriage destruction clothed in the innocent-sounding sheepskin of "equality".

The very definition of the word is at stake here, as the article nicely illustrates!

I’m tired of hearing of these “Disturbed” kids that don’t get help and constantly get released by the courts. Then people cry about how could this happen...

This is more than ignorance of the law; it's ignorance of right and wrong. The child literally doesn't know what he's doing, and that he shouldn't do it.

Other comments about institutionalization are spot-on. This is precisely the sort of person who needs to be in constant psychiatric care. He's dangerous to the public and doesn't know it.

-- "This individual [Rice] was the manager of Denny's. He therefore speaks for Denny's, in my mind. This policy effectively prohibits on-duty sworn police officers from dining in a Denny's Restaurant, but allows 'registered sex offenders,' 'felons' and or 'pedophiles' to enjoy a dining experience in Denny's."

Easy there you drama queen. Those people you denigrate are most likely Democrats, supporting your Democrat-controlled public-service union.

A lesson from history: The agents of uncontrolled governments have committed orders of magnitude greater atrocities than ALL the non-government 'felons', 'registered sex offenders' and 'pedophiles' -- hell, throw in 'serial killers' and 'predatory rapists' while we're at it -- combined!

Keeping the government under control is JOB #1. Otherwise they tend to quickly become criminals of the first order, and then have all the guns to boot!

The Constitution wasn't written with the concern and intent of controlling the power of the criminal, but rather that of the State.

I guess they looked at Chicago and said, this is working great. Maybe we can get 500+ murders in every city if we ban and confiscate all guns from law abiding citizens.

Obama has a cabinet member who said his goal was to get US gasoline prices up to the same level as Europe's, so everything would be "fair".

Perhaps this administration's goals are the same with the murder rate. Not enough people in Chicago getting whacked to compete with London yet.

What exactly is the lesson to be learned?

Unions are outdated, anti-competitive, inefficient, destructive and dangerous.

    Anything questions?

A similar anecdote: I used to work for a company with an underground mine at the 1500 ft level. Cutting through rock in such a mine releases natural methane gas, which must be constantly monitored and controlled through active ventilation.

One of the absolute, hard-and-fast rules in such a mine is NO SMOKING!!! Of course, one of the union bozos understood that rules don't apply to union workers, so he snuck away, lit up his pipe full of weed and toked away while others worked in a potentially explosive environment.

He was caught, turned in to the safety dept. and promptely fired, as he should have been. At the very next contract negotiation, the union demanded -- and got -- the guy re-hired.

The fact that this guy was doing his best to get himself and everyone else -- all union members -- on his shift KILLED didn't faze the union in the least.

Bush stayed with a failed policy in Iraq and Afghanistan too long, and as a consequence, we lost our precious fighting men and women needlessly...

What failed policy is that? And, more to the point, what do you assert that he should have done?

...along with pissing away money at a rate only now surpassed by Obama.

This article does a good job of explaining the actual spending facts. In a closer analysis, W scores pretty well compared to other presidents. TARP did him in for spending, and we all agree that he was flat wrong on that. Still too many Keynesian consultants floating around, and W listened to them.

TARP made W look really bad and the repayments made Obambi look much better. It distorts the actual policies of both presidents, IMO.

But the biggest mess was the financial crisis, which he should have seen coming, ( probably did, but too late). He should have taken action on Fannie and Freddie...

On that we agree. However, the actual blame for the crisis lies squarely on Democrat shoulders. They are the ones who pushed for legislation tying lenders' hands so they were forced to lend to those who had no business holding a mortgage. That's the root of the failure, and Bush had nothing to do with that, and his bad response was due to his following bad advice. He should have never listened to more useless Keynesian nonsense.

And with all this, you are quibbling about the man’s I.Q?

Hey, you started it, Bub. Be more precise with your words. As I said before, there are some areas where Bush was flat-out WRONG. But the man is not stupid.

Command lines are for idiot geeks that can’t write an effective user interface and think they’re being clever by memorizing arcane command line codes.

Or, they're the pure, direct interface into the O/S and used heavily by actual system administrators with enough experience to know that there is no GUI that can effectively cover the millions of variations on commands needed to do everyone's job effectively.

Maybe that's it. :) ...or maybe you're right and tens of thousands of sysads really are idiots and have been doing it wrong all these decades.

Surprising column for an NYT liberal.

Not at all, when you consider that he's pointing out this behavior in red-state Kentucky, rather than the exact same thing going on three blocks away from him in NYC.

Smells like an attempt at highlighting conservative hypocrisy to me.

GWB, not so much. Reasonably decent, but dumb!

Oh good grief. Stop drinking the liberal Kool-Aid, would you?

GWB was and is many things, but dumb is not one of them. He was absolutely wrong about some things, some important things, but that doesn't make him dumb. The "Republican X is dumb" mantra is pure Democrat propaganda, so please don't parrot it.

    Wrong does NOT equal dumb.
