Haven't posted here in a long while. I got a call from Dad yesterday that Mom has a mild case of pneumonia. Mild though, is a relative term. Mom is 74 years old, and had 2/3rds of her right lung removed about 12 years ago due to lung cancer. I spoke with Dad earlier today, and he advised that she had a rough night, but seems to be slightly improved. If you would, please keep my Mom in your prayers. We would all appreciate it.

Greetings! An acquaintance of mine is going to be going to Las Vegas with a group of friends for the first time. I was stationed there from 84-94, and have been back once or twice since then. I told her that the best places in Las Vegas are the places that aren't on the strip. Not the big houses, but the mom and pop places out there. Now, I need recommendations from the folks on scene. Food, shows, places to go, things to see and do - off the beaten track and away from all the big touristy stuff.

Wow. Had a doctor's appointment last week for a completely different issue. First thing the doc says is, "the weight loss is great!" That's when I explained that the 30-35 pounds I had lost had all been in the last month or so. That I was constantly thirsty, and "peeing like a race horse." That's when the original reason for the appointment got pushed to the back and that's when life changed. That's when we tested my blood sugar and found it at 297, and shortly after that was when I did my first injection of insulin. Yes, the symptoms...

Good morning! My family (myself, my wife, and our 16 year old and 14 month old) have been presented with the opportunity to adopt a Boxer. His owner is being relocated and cannot take him with her. He's three years old, gets along with small animals, which is good seeing as we have two cats, and a Sheltie. I've read about them quite a bit, and have been around a couple of them. My wife has owned one in the past. I'm impressed with them, but I'd like to get some owner's opinions and suggestions. My wife's coworker recently posted a message about an MRI his six year old son recently underwent. HARRIMAN — A retention pond wall collapsed early this morning at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston steam plant, releasing a mixture of water and fly ash that flooded nearly a dozen homes and caused a train wreck. No injuries have been reported, but one house was swept into the middle of Swan Pond Circle Road and huge piles of wet fly ash cover the roadway. Officials say 4 to 6 feet of material washed out of the pond and now covers up to 400 acres of land adjacent to the plant. ...excerpt...

LAKE CITY - Spc. Jason Dean Hovater was much more than a soldier stationed in an outpost in Afghanistan near the Pakistan border. "He was a brother and a son and a husband,'' said Hovater's sister, Jessica Davis of Norris. "Most of all, he was a man of God. He was a light to other people around him." Hovater, a Clinton resident, was one of nine soldiers killed last weekend in the deadliest assault in Afghanistan against the U.S. military in three years. OLIVER SPRINGS, TN -- Firefighters at the site of an oil well fire in Oliver Springs expect the fire to burn for a few more days before it is extinguished. They plan to use heavy equipment and water to extinguish the blaze. Three firefighters from Wild Well Control will are figuring out how to get the oil to stop flowing so the fire can be extinguished. Officials from the Tennessee Department of Transportation are now evaluating a sinkhole that opened up Monday evening on Pellissippi Parkway. Its in the southbound lanes of Pellissippi, just south of where the Parkway merges with Oak Ridge Highway. The hole looks to be about four feet wide on the surface, but a TDOT geologist says its at least 25 feet across, and goes under both southbound lanes. He says it was caused by water eroding the limestone. Crews will work all night to get that sinkhole filled, but they likely won't be finished by the morning commute, and it may...

Twenty-two years ago today, my dad came down to the MEPS Center in Knoxville, Tennessee in his dress blues, his retiree pin on his lapel, and took his place in front of me. The sergeant has been identified as 35-year-old Jeff Stephen Kennedy, said state Sen. Randy McNally, R-Oak Ridge, who learned of his death Tuesday morning at a National Guard breakfast in Nashville. Kennedy is the second member of the 278th to die in recent weeks and the first Anderson County man killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 278th's Sgt. Paul W. Ok - here goes. I live in Tennessee - I guess that much might be obvious. However, there's a webcam in Wyoming that looks out on the Grand Tetons (I used to live in Colorado, and fell in love with that kind of countryside). What I'm looking for is a piece of software that will go to that website and grab an updated copy of the still image from the webcam every minute or so, each time with a different name - numerically incremented would be great. I want to let it run for about 15 hours - sunrise to...

A Tennessee soldier killed last week in Iraq is still touching lives. Paul Thomason, a father of four, died in Kirkuk when his convoy was ambushed. During his four months in Iraq, Thomason had been sending letters to an elementary school in his hometown of Jefferson City. Two of Thomason's children attend the school; one is in the second grade, the other is in the fourth grade. The latest and possibly last letter arrived at Jefferson Elementary on Monday, the day after Thomason's death. Thomason's letters told of life in Iraq, and what it was like to be an East Tennessee...

Ok - I've been presented with an opportunity of sorts - to return to school to complete a bachelor's degree. With my work schedule the way it is, the best way is probably going to be through the online degree programs being offered. I'm looking at Tusculum here in East Tennessee, but some folks have told me I should consider the University of Phoenix. Any fellow Freepers have any experience with the University of Phoenix or any other online degree programs that they'd care to share? Any kind of tips or clues you'd care to offer would be more than...

An Oak Ridge church was gutted by fire early New Year's Eve. No injuries were reported at press time, but the local fire chief called the cause of the blaze very "suspicious." First Christian Church, which is located at 203 Michigan Ave., was the site of what are believed to be two set fires - one in the bottom part of the structure and another in the top section of the church. Oak Ridge Fire Chief Mack Bailey said he received a call regarding the fire at 2:20 a.m. Friday. "This fire was set in two distinct places," Bailey noted....

I was advised this morning that the son and daughter-in-law of a man that my parents go to church with is missing in Phuket, Thailand. The last we heard is that they were going to the beach for their holiday. The last time they were heard from was Friday evening.

Good afternoon, Freepers! I have two kittens, approximately 7 months old that we adopted approximately 5 months ago. They were hand raised from approximately 2 weeks of age (their mother was killed on the roadside), and they're about the friendliest cats I've ever run into. However, they've gotten to be more than my daughter is willing to handle. As it stands, I'm taking care of my daughter, the house, the original cat and the dog, and myself - so I've got my hands full. If there is anyone in the Oak Ridge/Knoxville area who would like to have two loving,...

Ok, here goes - I do cross stitch - it's a hobby I picked up while I was in the military (great for finger dexterity, and beat the heck out of re-reading the same Louis Lamour books over and over while sitting on alert duty). Only access I have to the net nowadays is through work, so I'm facing a little constraint on being able to search for stuff. Now, a little history - I was in the Air Force, stationed at Nellis AFB as a jet engine mechanic. The last unit I served in was the 57th FW. I'm...

If you would, keep me in your prayers - I have a job interview at 4:00 Eastern time. I have been working for a pharmacy benefits manager for the last two years, and in the last several months, I've found that I'm having some serious moral and ethical issues with the job that I'm doing. I was sent an e-mail last night regarding a position I applied for at a computer help desk (a job I've done and enjoyed before) asking me to call for an interview. I called this morning, and they want me in at 4:00 PM. This...

May 8, 2004 OAK RIDGE (WATE) -- About 150 people were forced from their homes Saturday afternoon when a chemical reaction caused a fire at the former K-25 site west of Oak Ridge. Roads surrounding the facility remain closed to all traffic.U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) officials say the fire at the East Tennessee Technology Park was caused when liquid sodium reacted to water vapor in the air during recycling operations by a company called Toxco Metals. The facility recycles metals and other materials as a contractor for the DOE. Officials stress that no radioactive material was involved in the incident. No injuries were reported and all...
