While the nation’s spotlight is on the thousands of children illegally entering the United States, Littlefield has been tapped to potentially house the growing number of immigrant detainees. Thousands of undocumented children are being crammed into Texas military bases for processing while the government searches for a more permanent solution. The Bill Clayton Detention Center may be it. The West Texas town officials have been in talks with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for about two years and touched base with the federal department last week, Littlefield City Manager Mike Arismendez said. “We’ve been in communication with them about...

When a former U.S. president comes to visit, there’s more to it than rolling out the welcome mat — and there will be two presidents here this week. “There’s definitely a lot of preparation work on the front end,” Palo Duro Canyon State Park Superintendent Cory Evans said. Bill Clinton will speak at 8 p.m. Tuesday at West Texas A&M University’s First United Bank Center. Then George W. Bush will bike the trails of the state park Thursday through Saturday with 20 “wounded warriors” picked for their bravery and sacrifices in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Trail of terror for cyclists may lead to prison BY JASON WOMACK AVALANCHE-JOURNAL A man who police say used wires, broken bottles and nails to wage an eco-terrorism campaign against Lubbock cyclists could spend time in prison. David G. Knape, 62, of Lubbock staged at least a year-long campaign against unsuspecting cyclists, according to police reports. He stretched wires between trees at "neck level" and put nails and glass in the pathway of cyclists. "This could kill someone," said Dewayne Wallace, an avid cyclist whose friend was flung from his bicycle and cut across the neck by one of the...

AUSTIN – Thousands of college graduates with no teacher training are expected to be put in charge of classrooms this fall under a controversial plan approved Friday to ease the state's teacher shortage. The plan creates a new two-year teaching certificate that allows college graduates to become instant teachers in grades eight through 12 if they pass a state test and their degree is related to the subjects they would teach. State Board of Education members cleared the plan on Friday even though a bare majority was against it. Opponents on the 15-member board were two votes short of the...
