I’m a bit older (69). I bought my first knife at the age of eight. It was what we all called a boy scout knife. I think I bought it via mail order from a Boys Life magazine AD. It was similar to the Swiss Army knife only fewer blades. Nearly every kid in the neighborhood seemed to have one & we would get together nearly every day in the summer & play mumblety-peg for hours.
At the age of ten I sold greeting/Christmas cards door-to-door. Instead of being paid in $’s, there was a catalogue from which you would select a “prize” based on the # of cards you sold. Once I selected a Daisey BB gun. They shipped it to me & I used it until I graduated to a 20 ga. H&R sinle shot when I was 12.
