KNOXVILLE — Jenny Wright, the University of Tennessee student judicial affairs director fired Monday amid a probe into whether she had inappropriate relationships with student-athletes, was recently offered an adjunct professorship there, records show. Wright, 32, had received glowing performance reviews and commendations during her five-year tenure in the judicial affairs office, according to her personnel file. The adjunct position, offered to her in March, would have earned Wright an additional $4,500 per course in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. She made $70,000 annually in her role as judicial affairs director, according to the university. Wright was...

Like me, millions of high-school seniors with sour grapes are asking themselves this week how they failed to get into the colleges of their dreams. It's simple: For years, they—we—were lied to. Colleges tell you, "Just be yourself." That is great advice, as long as yourself has nine extracurriculars, six leadership positions, three varsity sports, killer SAT scores and two moms. Then by all means, be yourself! If you work at a local pizza shop and are the slowest person on the cross-country team, consider taking your business elsewhere. What could I have done differently over the past years? For...

Yoko Ono tweeted a photo of John Lennon’s bloody glasses this week. Why? Well, she was celebrating her 44th wedding anniversary to the late Beatles singer. Ono sat down to reflect about Lennon’s life and death this week and she came to the conclusion that there have been far too many gun deaths in the world in the 33 years since Lennon was assassinated. Ono wrote on Twitter: “Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the USA since John Lennon was shot and killed on 8 Dec 1980.” The singer / artist sent out several more messages about...

Sure, it’s easy to criticize Hollywood, but try to remember that the entertainment industry today is an intellectually demanding environment, fraught with cognitively challenging, even intractable, questions, like, to take one recent example: How can the cable mini-series “The Bible” be such a ratings hit when there is no audience for overtly religious entertainment programming? According to the latest Nielsens, released Tuesday, Sunday night’s telecast of “The Bible,” produced by husband-and-wife team Mark Burnett and Roma Downey for basic cable’s History channel, managed to attract more viewers than anything on broadcast network NBC … during the entire week. The second...

The worst of the storm will hit late Friday and Friday night and will wind down Saturday morning. However, lingering effects from blowing and drifting snow, blocked roads and other travel delays are likely to linger into much of the weekend. Dayton police said they were originally called about a mother and daughter argument about midnight Thursday. In light of the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Jones said today that he would like to see legislation introduced that would mandate placing armed personnel in all public and private Ohio schools, from elementary schools through colleges. Jones said he believes putting guns in schools — either assigned law enforcement officers or select...

Lawyers for the families call the settlements "landmark." The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which has filed a number of gun suits, said this is the first time a gun manufacturer has agreed to pay a settlement to victims. Democrats are poised to avoid the danger of President Barack Obama accepting his party’s nomination before a partially-empty stadium by shifting his speech to an indoor arena and citing ‘severe weather’. The Obama campaign have been working desperately to ensure that the 74,000-seater Bank of America stadium in Charlotte would be filled. Images of rows of empty seats at the stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers, as Obama speaks on Thursday night would be politically disastrous – an enduring image of the contrast between his campaign of ‘hope’ and ‘change’ in 2008 and his dour, negative struggle for re-election in...

Transgender women will be allowed to participate in the Miss Universe beauty pageant next year, officials announced Tuesday, a week after they ruled a trail-blazing 23-year-old could vie for the crown this year. Pageant officials said they are working on the language of the official rule policy change but expected final word to come soon. Trials for next year's Miss Universe pageant begin this summer.

For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke. I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the...

The setup and aftermath on Friday for the Ohio and Tennessee valleys could be similar to the weather pattern during and following the 1974 Super Outbreak. Spanning April 3-4, 1974, a swarm of tornadoes tore through areas from Illinois and southern Michigan to northern Alabama and Georgia. The outbreak produced 148 confirmed tornadoes, six of which were F-5 intensity. The most powerful of these storms slammed into Xenia, Ohio. Every weather pattern no matter how similar always has its differences, and this outbreak will have its own characteristics. However, according to Severe Weather Expert Henry Margusity, "In the case of...

TEXAS -- Less than an hour- that's how long Mark Aulger got to see his daughter, Savannah, before he died. The Colony father had recently learned that he had survived colon cancer, but his wife said months of chemotherapy badly deteriorated his lungs. "It was basically like his lungs were soaked in concrete," Diane Aulger said. "They couldn't inhale or pass oxygen throughout the body, he was in essence, suffocating to death." In January, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to the hospital. Doctors said his lungs were badly scarred and he was given just days to live. His...

It could be the biggest copper theft in U.S. history and it's apparently been going on here in the Tri-State for years. It involves a massive on-going federal investigation. In a story you'll see only on Local 12, reporter Rich Jaffe adds up the cost of a missing treasure chest of "red gold". In February of last year, agents from the Internal Revenue Service and the FBI along with police from Cincinnati, Blue Ash and a couple of Northern Kentucky agencies executed federal search warrants at numerous locations around the Tri-State. Among other places they hit were Garden Street Metals,...
