RE: your misfires on .22 rounds... I am seeing that occur occasionally with my BSA Rifle Shooting MB training. We shoot single shot bolt action rifles. Trigger pull / ‘click’/ count to ‘30’ / extract / confirm firing pin strike / rotate cartridge 90 degrees and reload - fires..... What is happening is in the manufacturing process. The primer media is not getting distributed evenly in the rim and you have a void. The round is only ‘slightly defective’. If, after a second or third ‘misfire’. Destroy the cartridge.

“I have yet, to see one of those organizations provide a historical view of American firearms, and teach firearm safety, and marksmanship (which might be still a Scout badge), to our future generations.”

Mr. Smith, regarding your comment about Scouts and shooting sports... The Rifle Shooting Merit Badge and Shotgun Shooting Merit Badge are quite alive and well in the Boy Scout program. I am an NRA Training Counselor and MB Instructor for my council's summer camp shooting program. We will see almost 1,000 youth come thru the MB programs this summer, some of whom have never handled a firearm before - and may never again, but they will learn SAFETY - Knowledge - Skills and a proper Attitude when they finish the course. The kids are taught using the NRA First Steps training supplemented with BSA specific requirements.
The kids want to learn - we have to give them the opportunity....

    My comments from anotehr thread....

    1) At this time, No one knows or has reported what make/model of pistols the shooter used.
    2) Let us assume that he had 2 Beretta M9 - 9MM military issue pistols.
    3) Beretta M9 uses a 15 rd dbl stack magazine.
    4) Two gun w/1 magazine each = 30 rds. 2 magazines each pistol = 60 rds. continue the math.
    5) Magazine drop/reload = 3 to 5 seconds..
    6) volume of targets in close confine area..

There were a lot of deaths and injuries. But, there could have been more had it not been for the response of the civilian PD.

Update on original posting from the County Attorney...

Prosecutor Says Omaha Shooting was Justified
    Omaha
    Posted: 4:59 PM Jan 16, 2009
    Last Updated: 4:59 PM Jan 16, 2009
    Reporter: KOLN/KGIN

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine says the owner of Midwest Grillz and Jewelry in Omaha shot and killed two people, but calls the shooting justified.

Sixteen-year-old Marcel Davis and 29-year-old Willie Wakefield were found dead inside the store. A third person, 22-year-old Brandon Boyce was shot in the abdomen.

Davis and Wakefield went to Midwest Grillz at 62nd and Ames late Tuesday to pick up some gold plated teeth. Kleine says Wakefield was upset about the “grills.” He pulled a 9mm gun and fired two shots at store owner Andre McKesson.

Kleine says McKesson returned fire with an SKS rifle; getting off more than a dozen shots. 16-year-old Marcel Davis was not armed.

Police are still looking for a fourth witness to the shooting. According to Kleine, investigators have been told varying stories about what happened. At this time, he is not pressing any charges against Andre McKesson.

Count the number of parties involved
    1 = Store owner
    2 & 3 inside store for ‘grillz’
4 = just outside door - late evening
5 = “witness” police are looking for (aka as the “DRIVER” of the vehicle they arrived in)

To enter store, you must be ‘buzzed in’..
Once inside, an argument ensued about grillz, payment already received for said grillz and no delivery, and from here it goes downhill. Allegedly, one of the 2 inside pulled a handgun - owner fired back - party outside tried to get in - owner may think he is armed, coming to assist - driver hits the gas and is long gone...

Not knowing your general location, I would suggest that first, you find a shooting range or good sized gun shop that has a variety of hand guns. Handle the guns for fit/feel. At the range, you should be able to rent an assortment of handguns for a test firing period.

For a beginner, I strongly recommend that you lean toward a revolver. You pull the trigger - it goes boom... No slides to deal with - no barrels to ‘tip up’..

As a sample, Ruger SP101 models have small grips. They come chambered for .357 (shoot .38’s for lower recoil) and come in an assortment of barrel lengths. They have a new chambering for a .327 round.

Are you going to carry? Y/N
How are you going to carry? purse/pocket/belt

Once you can get to a gun shop (don’t have to buy there), handle as many hand guns as you like. You will want to make sure the grip is comfortable. You have got to be able to control the handgun. It will do no good if you fire one round and then have to look for the gun on the floor in the dark because it “jumped” out of your hand.

If you are looking at a semi automatic, make sure you can work the slide.

The Ruger SP101 comes in a hammerless, double action, .357, 5 shot revolver. Shorter bbl and good for concealed carry.
    http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=5720&return=Y

Someone earlier mentioned a shotgun. Depending upon your physical stature, a 20 gauge Youth model pump (Rem 870 / Mossberg 500) may be adequate. Loads of dbl “OO” or #2’s would be a good hallway cleaner. Shorter bbl would be easier to manuever in a home situation and it could be fired with out a consious effort to ‘aim’. Rack the slide and listen for feet going away..

Rem 870 is a pump as is the Mossberg 500. Both can be retrofitted with extended magazine tubes. A pump will slow you down and you have a more controlled situation without the fast expenditure of ammunition. The sound of a pump shotgun racking a round into the chamber is quite a sobering sound in the darkness for someone who is not where they are supposed to be.

wonder if the lawyers have the facts to back that up.

    Debate is still open....
Davis is telling anyone who will listen that the boy does have a 2-yr old child.

A new attorney entered the game yesterday, AMY PECK, on the side of the youth, pro bono.. Claims the photos that are being show of the youth and a child purported to be his, is actually his younger brother.. BUT, she does not back up her claim either. She is also working the ‘visa’ angle hard to get him back in the country where he can testify and then, I suspect, once that is done, he and the whole family climb into their vehicle and disappear in a cloud of dust.

Davis offers no proof of his being older than what the Mexican govt and his family have provided which claims he is 13..

Woman even had her own children up there for the news conference to show her “13” yr old and how “small and vulnerable” he was. Kid sure looked impressed being used as an example.

City Of OMAHA requires registration for handgun if you reside in the city limits. I can go anywhere in the state with my "permit to purchase" card and buy a handgun and, since I reside inside Omaha, I'm 'supposed' to take the firearm to the OPD and register once it is in my possession.

If I purchase from a dealer inside Omaha, they will not deliver said firearm until I have taken the bill of sale to the OPD - registered - and then they will deliver upon return.

    Don't like any of it...

As far as the "confusion"... this is an individual thing.. I would say 99% of everyone interested in CCW knows what the requirements are.. They are posted on the NSP web in very plain language. The state is dragging their feet on the certification of instructors, however. Seems the only ones certified so far are retired law officers.. ???

    "Parade Floats and Hayrides
The BSA rule prohibiting the transportation of passengers in the backs of trucks or on trailers may be tempered for parade floats or hayrides, provided that the following points are strictly followed to prevent injuries:

    1. Transportation to and from the parade or hayride site is not allowed on the truck or trailer.

    3. Legs should not hang over the side.

    Here's my .02 worth....
The MacArthur Bridge, downtown St. Louis has 2 railroad main tracks to cross the Mississippi River from East St. Louis to St. Louis. A Union Pacific train of 133 empty coal cars and 3 locomotives was stopped on top of the bridge on the north track. Rear end was in Illinois - head end was in Missouri. Straight line winds from the north came basically 'down the river' and blew over 42 of the 133 cars.

Now, these cars, when empty have what we call a "blow-over" speed. That is, if the winds reach certain criteria levels that equal or exceed the 'blow-over' speed of the cars.. we stop the trains... The 'blow-over' speed for this train was 70 mph.. The likelyhood that wind speeds reached or exceeded 70 mph is quite probable..

We will be re-railing cars off the bridge ALL day....

Yup... Called the Sunset Route from the old SP. Lordsburg Sub from El Paso to Tucson.

There are a number of sidings which are being connected and as they are connected, it now becomes a second main track.

On an average day, right now - without any "events" which would impact operations, we are averaging 50-55 trains a day in that corridor. As more single track is turned into double track the volumes will increase..

Most of the old bridges out there were creosote piling type design.. Those are being replaced with pre-stressed concrete and some steel.

Trying to keep up with the demand.... I'll have to dig around and see if there is number associated with the cost of this corridor alone. We are doing the same thing on a couple more primary routes. We even have triple track in some locations...

What's your general area that UP is woking track? We have projects going on in a lot of places right now.

    A little Union Pacific info....
    Route Miles - 32,400
    Employees - 50,000 (and HIRING)
    Payroll - $3.6 Billion
    Purchases - $3.9 Billion
    Locomotives - 8,000 (new $$$ 2.5 million each)
    Freight cars - 107,000

Increased volumes with out increased capacity results in slower transit times. Shippers want "overnight" door to door service but sometimes you just don't get what you want. More main line tracks - more capacity in the major yards, employees with a good work ethic (good 1/3 of the train and engine svc employees "took" the holiday "off").. no employee - no trains move. At 400am this morning we have over 200 trains laid down, over 50 were waiting for a crew to mark up or get rested to run.. They are coming back now but slowly..

WHOA... I was born and raised in Louisiana and spent a few long days at POLK back in the late '60's... That spray had to be some major bug killer to get rid of a Louisiana cockroach.. They are so big, we could glue threads on their backs and have them pull little chariots and race them..
By the way... Thanks for serving..

    PHILMONT... Cimmeron New Mexico

    http://www.scouting.org/philmont/main.shtml

Premier outdoor Scouting experience. 10's of thousands of acres in the Sangre De Christo Mtn range. (OH, that translates to "Blood Of Christ" dosen't it?) Land was donated by the Phillips family to the Boy Scouts in perpetuity.

My troop has used 'phone-bank and speed dials" to get on the list for "next years" slots. Usually treks are filled within minutes of the opening for the seasons reservations.

A few points to cover for general information before things get too far off tilt..

    TEXAS HUNTER EDUCATION:
Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course.
DICK CHENEY EXEMPT FROM HUNTER EDUCATION REQUIREMENT IN TEXAS

    TEXAS BLAZE ORANGE LAWS
All persons on public hunting lands (state, national forests, and grasslands) during daylight hours when hunting with firearms is permitted must wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange material with orange headgear, and at least 144 square inches appearing on both chest and back.

    Exempt from these requirements are:
    persons hunting turkey, migratory birds, alligators, or desert bighorn sheep;
persons within the enclosed passenger compartment of a motor vehicle; or
persons within a designated campground, designated vehicle parking area, designated boat launching facility, or departmental check station.
ALL MEMBERS OF THE PARTY WERE REPORTED TO BE WEARING "HUNTER ORANGE".

From a personal side... You hunt quail with small shot - 7 - 7 1/2 - 8 size, very small. Any larger that 7 (6-5-4 = duck) and you tear up the bird too badly. "BB" size.. - you are talking about geese. Would never be used on a quail.

    FWIW..

Carville's 'lovely' choice of evening attire is possibly a throw back to his multiple years as an undergraduate student at LSU (Louisiana State University) and his proximity to what used to be New Orleans and Mardis Gras.

The colors of purple, green and gold are the traditional colors of Mardis Gras.

Kind of tacky for the person / place and purpose of the function.. At least a sport coat and shirt if not a tie..

There has been a fountain of information here for you to digest so far... Take your time and go thru the postings. Compile the information as to caliber - costs - brands - models. Once this information is ready, then go and do some "looking". While looking, do not hesitate to "shoulder" the rifle. See how it "fits". It must be easy to mount to the shoulder and not require a lot of "adjusting" before you are ready to shoot. Some shots in the field require quick response and you don't have a lot of time to "get ready" to shoot.

Major sporting goods stores in your area should offer good prices on a larger variety of firearms. Wal-Mart will offer lower prices on combination packages (gun-scope) but on fewer choices..

Wal-Mart, as mentioned, carries Winchester - Remington - Weatherby brands in standard calibers. .243-.270-30.06

Last purchase I made of centerfire rifle was a Winchester model 70 in .270 with a 3x9 scope for under $400.00 at a Wal-Mart. With my son behind the lens, it will drive tacks at 100 yds and at 200 yrds, you can cover the holes with a silver dollar. We do our deer hunting here in eastern Nebraska and most of our shots are somewhat open terrain of 100 to 200 yds.

IF you are going to go for elk or larger, then as recommended earlier, a 30.06 would be my suggested minimum.

Consider the terrain you will hunt. Will the shots be mostly "long" 100 yds plus, or short, under 100 yds? Under 100 yds and a lever action "brush gun" such as the 30-30 might be the best bet (with a scope). Over 100yrds, then a bolt action with a scope may be the better choice.

Way too much info.... sorry for running on.. Good hunting.

Remember practice - practice - practice.. You owe it to your quarry for a quick, clean kill...
