Last year, radical Muslim Nidal Hasan murdered 13 unarmed American soldiers and wounded 30 others. Thank you, George H.W. Bush! Yesterday, radical Muslim Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez murdered four unarmed American soldiers. Thank you, George H.W. Bush! Yes, it former President Bush whom we must thank for this, for it was he who put into place a regulation stating that American soldiers off the frontlines, for the most part, must be unarmed. (Clinton perpetuated it, but Bush started it.) That makes them sitting ducks for a single radical Muslim with a gun, who can casually go and shoot one soldier at...

Iran's enemies unsettled by its deal with the West, but Bashar al-Assad of Syria says it is 'a great victory' The nuclear deal with Iran caused fury in Israel and consternation around the region at the likely increase in influence and resources of a newly enriched Iran. Most telling was the loudest expression of support. "I am happy that the Islamic Republic of Iran has achieved a great victory by reaching an agreement," President Bashar al-Assad of Syria said in a message to his Iranian opposite number, Hassan Rouhani. Bush and Bill Clinton shared a stage in a rare joint appearance in Texas on Thursday - to claim the current presidential campaign between their family members will be conducted with respect. The two former presidents - who have become friends in their retirement despite being from opposing parties - spoke about the contest that has seen Bill's wife Hillary seek the Democratic nomination and George's brother Jeb go after the Republican one. Either this is a brilliant marketing campaign or McDonald's has egg on its face. Customers have complained that a talking minions toy included in recent Happy Meals uses curse words. Alexis Hernandez said her 5-year-old daughter, Julissa, opened up the minion toy from her McDonald's Happy Meal while she was sitting in the back seat of their car and what they heard immediately got their attention. Hernandez said she heard, "What the F-," (expletive) followed by "All be damned." The little girl's grandmother thought Julissa said it at first. The father of a 12-year-old Omaha boy charged with first-degree murder is serving a life sentence in Minnesota for killing a man in 2010. Javaris Eugene Milton, 37, was convicted of first-degree murder in what Minneapolis authorities said was a marijuana-related robbery attempt. The crime is eerily similar to accusations that the boy, Jarrell Milton, his older brother and another teenager are facing in Douglas County.

Republican voters like having plenty of options but could quickly sour on negative campaigns. The Republican presidential primary is a jumbled mass of competitors, with new ones joining the jostling for support seemingly every week. Meanwhile, the Democrats have more a coronation than a contest, with one figure ignoring the rabble en route to the nomination. So why did a May 18 Pew Research Center poll find that 57% of Republicans have an excellent or good impression of their party’s candidates, while 54% of Democrats have an excellent or good impression of theirs? Bigger fields and active contests sometimes generate...

Toward the end of the presidency of George H.W. Bush, America stood alone at the top of the world—the sole superpower. After five weeks of “shock and awe” and 100 hours of combat, Saddam’s army had fled Kuwait back up the road to Basra and Bagdad. Our Cold War adversary was breaking apart into 15 countries. The Berlin Wall had fallen. Germany was reunited. The captive nations of Central and Eastern Europe were breaking free. The extent of corrosion damage on the U.S. military’s F/A-18 Hornet fleet is requiring more maintenance than expected, an admiral said. The Navy and Marine Corps are flying the legacy fighter jets longer than planned — 10,000 flight hours, up from 6,000 flight hours — because of delays in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, according to Rear Adm. Michael Manazir, the service’s director of air warfare. As a result, the 1980s-era, twin-engine aircraft is experiencing a high degree of wear and tear, including corrosion. “The corrosion impacts, I would say, caught us by surprise,” he said this week during...

ew government research shows that female military veterans commit suicide at nearly six times the rate of other women, a startling finding that experts say poses disturbing questions about the backgrounds and experiences of women who serve in the armed forces.. Their suicide rate is so high that it approaches that of male veterans, a finding that surprised researchers because men generally are far more likely than women to commit suicide. "It's staggering," said Dr. Matthew Miller, an epidemiologist and suicide expert at Northeastern University who was not involved in the research. "We have to come to grips with why...

Nobody screws up a one-car funeral, or kills the goose that lays the golden egg, quite like the Republican Party establishment. Such is the plight of a political party lead by people who don’t share the same basic values as its base. This puts the GOP in a constant state of inner turmoil. For example, just six months after a historic midterm election victory only 23 percent of Republicans believe their party’s leaders have kept their campaign promises, according to a new Pew Research poll. At the epicenter of this dysfunctional family lies my native state of Iowa: Home to...

LINCOLN, Neb. — State Sen. Sen. Ernie Chambers isn’t backing down. The state lawmaker from Omaha defiantly stood Thursday on the floor of the Nebraska Legislature and rejected many of his colleagues’ calls for him to apologize — or even resign — for comparing cops to ISIS terrorists and suggesting he’d shoot a cop if he weren’t nonviolent and had a gun. “I meant what I said and I said what I meant,” Chambers said.
