In the aftermath of Herman Cain’s stunning victory in the Florida Straw Poll, much has been written and spoken by the so-called “experts” trying to explain this unexpected turn of events. Even though none of these “experts” predicted a Cain win, or even considered it a possibility, they feel uniquely qualified to explain an event they never saw coming. Put another way, the “experts” were caught off guard, blind-sided, and were in need of a quick score. I decided to share my experience in the hope of shining some light on what happened, how it happened, and offer an explanation...

Supporters of Michael Schiavo's effort to end his wife's life have asked how conservatives, who claim to believe in the sanctity of marriage, can fail to respect his husbandly authority. The most obvious answer is that a man's authority as a husband does not supersede his wife's rights as a human being-- ..... Mr. Schiavo, in other words, has virtually remarried. Strong selective pressure has made Fido seem smarter According to Men's Health magazine, 71% of American men believe their dogs understand them at some telepathic level.1The Tonight Show's host, Jay Leno, suggested that this was because men and dogs share the same basic interests ("eat, sleep, play ball, and hump"). Recent research suggests psychological similarities between human and dog that might surprise even a comedian. For years researchers have been looking to chimpanzees to find glimpses of human-like intelligence. The argument, reasonable enough on its face, was that genetic relatedness would predict psychological similarity. But what about Fido? When stacked up against...

Kerry on the Record: DefenseDave Eberhart, NewsMax.comTuesday, Feb. 17, 2004This is Part II in a series revealing the front-runner's track record on the important issues of the day. Part I. Kerry on the Record: Pow/MIASen. John Forbes Kerry, D-Mass., in his “vision for a better America” manifesto, “A Call to Service,” may have unwittingly named his own poison when it comes to his record on defense: “There’s one thing you cannot take away from President Bush: He did establish beyond a shadow of a doubt the credibility of U.S. threats to use military force against our enemies. Our strength...

A mission to sex up scientese A lot of scientific papers are inherently incomprehensible and dull. But cancer researcher Chris McCabe has plans to change all that Thursday February 5, 2004The Guardian The following two sentences encapsulate what I love about the art of scientific writing. Judged by almost every criterion, their words are a disaster. And yet to someone somewhere, who probably has a beard, they tell a story of beautiful endeavour and lyrical truth. Read them and be dismayed. "Dynamics of the leukocytes fibrinolytic activity and expression of receptors to thrombin by lymphocytes were studied in patients...

I did my taxes Friday night and was totally blown away by what a difference the tax changes made. For a little background, I make low 30's, have 2 kids, and am the one that brings home the bacon. I did get the tax rebate for one kid (other is too old at 17). Last year, mid-year, I got a raise ($1), and was worried it would mess me up- in the past, raises have been a mixed blessing- more money- and more taxes. This year though, even with the raise, *less* money was flying out of my check to...

UK animal lab scrapped Cambridge decision leaves scientists worried and activists contemplating what next | By Philip Hunter Cambridge University's decision this week to abandon a high-profile project to build a neuroscience laboratory involving research on primates has been hailed as a victory by animal rights groups and condemned as a devastating blow for British science by senior researchers and decision makers. “It's an appalling decision for science and British science in particular,” said Ian Gibson, head of the House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology. It will almost certainly lead to the research going to another...

Bryant Operation Hopes to Build a Financially Literate AmericaPaige McKenzieThursday, Jan. 29, 2004 Remember 1992? The acquittal of the policemen in the Rodney King beating had led to riots in Los Angeles' South Central neighborhood. The melee led to around $1 billion in property damage, 3,000 burned structures, and thousands of lives – 55 people died and 8,000 more were arrested. But the South Central story would have gone from bad to worse if not for a 26 year old African American who entered the picture. Today, John Bryant is not on the Forbes 400. He doesn’t run a...

By John R. Lott Jr.

People fear guns. Yet, while guns make it easier for bad things to happen, they also make it easier for people to protect themselves.

With the avalanche of horrific news stories about guns over the years, it's no wonder people find it hard to believe that, according to surveys (one I conducted for 2002 for my book, "The Bias Against Guns," and three earlier academic surveys by different researchers published in such journals as the Journal of Criminal Justice) there are about two million defensive gun uses (search) each year; guns are used defensively four times more frequently than they are to commit crimes.

Any Greenville/Upstate SC FReepers who are signed up at Townhall Meetup, or interested in participating in some local conservative activism, please consider attending. There are a total of 33 members so hopefully we can get a good group. My hubby (freeper TheStickman) and I will definitely be there, as this time it's close to us. There have never been enough members of Bush '04 meetup to get a meetup happening, so maybe this will work! The venue is in Greer. Please visit and sign up or check in and confirm attendance! Thanks!
