  • US May Lose Original 1945 Iwo Jima Monument at Bonhams Auction:

John&Tio, thanks for your interest. Most people don’t know there was an earlier original 1945 Monument. This original 10-ton Monument in the Daily News rare 1945 color photo was made in 1945 of cast stone (bronzed) and is not the 80-ton 1952 bronze in Arlington. (Don’t worry, it’s still there!) This 1945 one never belonged to gov’t. Our gov’t was broke in 1945 so sculptor DeWeldon paid for it and lent it to Navy who gave it back to him when Pan American Union was built on that spot. Congressional Resolution thanking him + authorizing the larger Arlington bronze goes with it! Bonhams catalog has the full history. I’m donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Monument and collection to the MARINE CORPS – LAW ENFORCEMENT FOUNDATION which provides scholarships for the children of those killed in action.
