“Hamilton,” an improbable hip-hop musical about America’s first Treasury secretary, completed its rapturous march across America’s awards landscape on Sunday, picking up Broadway’s highest honor: the Tony Award for best new musical. The prize capped an amazing season for the show, a smash hit that has been sold out from the start, captivating audiences and the broader culture through its use of today’s sounds and a largely nonwhite cast to explore America’s revolutionary origins and their contemporary relevance.

Despite the spike in mass shootings in recent years, gun crime in America is actually decreasing overall, a Washington Post story notes, listing some of the reasons. The Post cites a Pew Research Center study showing 7 deaths by firearm for every 100,000 Americans in 1993, but by 2013, that rate had been cut to 3.6 per 100,000. Some of the reasons cited by the Post include: * More police on the streets. * Police use of computers to pinpoint areas where more patrols are needed. * Decreased alcohol use. * Less lead in the air from gasoline after passage...

The Mormon Church staked a deeper claim to middle ground in American society on Tuesday, advocating for compromises between protecting religious liberties and prohibiting discrimination, and criticizing Kentucky clerk Kim Davis for refusing to license gay marriages. The Mormons chose Oaks, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles that guides The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to give the speech. Oaks declared himself devoted to both church doctrine and the laws of a democratic society. But when conflicts between them arise and are decided, citizens of a democracy must follow court rulings, he said.

Excerpt, Few celebrities have weathered as many extreme ups and downs as Heather Mills. On one hand, the ex-Mrs. Paul McCartney is known by such tags as “Mucca” or “the most hated woman in Britain”; on the other hand, she has managed to carve out a wide-ranging career including lauded charity work, stints on reality TV, and Alpine ski racing — Mills, who lost her lower leg in an 1993 accident, is a multi-medalist for the British Paralympic ski team. Still, the 47-year-old’s acrimonious 2008 divorce with the Beatle has remained, publicly at least, the centerpiece of her life. In...

A young Egyptian journalist named Merette Ibrahim has come to question visiting Defense Secretary Bob Gates at a roundtable discussion. She’s passionately idealistic about Egypt’s new democracy, and you might think she would be enthusiastic about President Obama, who supports the political revolution underway here. But she isn’t: She says that Egyptians find Obama and his policies confusing. Welcome to a growing club. This is a president who promotes change but is failing to articulate it in a way that would convince young Arabs. The Egyptian journalists I met here cited these contradictions: Obama is against military intervention in Libya...

Vice President Joe Biden is tired of seeing the Obama administration's economic stimulus plan demeaned, derided and dismissed, and he wanted to talk about it. ............ Transforming a listless national argument about the stimulus and health care into a larger debate over how to maintain American pre-eminence is both audacious and useful. Off-message, Biden found the right message.

If Barack Obama was born on August 14, 1961 - then his mother was likely pregnant sometime in October of 1960. Since Obama's mother was born on November 29th, 1942 that would make her pregnant at 17. Last time I checked... Barack Obama had enormous respect for his maternal grandmother, even though this woman raised a child who got pregnant at age 17.
