My son is a candidate for the United States Naval Academy. He is a good athlete (varsity wrestling), top of his class at an excellent school and had perfect SAT scores. He has had his heart set on Annapolis for years. The problem is he has mild amblyopia. One eye is correctable only to 20-50. His overall vision is 20-20 because his dominant eye takes over. I understand that DODMERB lists this as a disqualifying condition for admission; however, I understand that vision waivers are available in certain circumstances, although I have been unable to get a clear answer as...
  • 173 killed in Afghan suicide bombing (Another Misleading Headline)

The headline at Yahoo! reads "173 killed in Afghan suicide bombing." This would lead you to believe there was a suicide bomber who killed 173 people this morning. This is because educated people can distinguish between the singular and the plural forms of "bombing." Of course, the story reveals that 173 is the number of people killed in all suicide bombings (plural) this year.
  • Yahoo! News Leads With Injured Child Photo in Story on Taliban Raid

The headline is that US forces kill up to 80 Taliban in a night raid on a Taliban stronghold in Kandahar province. Interestingly--but not surprisingly--the accompanying photo is of a wounded infant who was hurt in the incident, along with 16 other civilians. Apparently the Taliban hide among the civilians, and the provincial governor has warned civilians not to harbor the Taliban lest they come to harm. Anyway, I found the photo and presentation "angle" of the incident very telling, especially in light of the story text. • United States Naval Academy Vision Waiver (VANITY)

My son is a high school junior who has been interested in the United States Naval Academy. He is an excellent student (4.0 in all honors courses) and a National Merit Semi-Finalist (99%+ SATs). He is a good athlete (varsity wrestling) and citizen. Here is the issue: he has slight amblyopia of his left eye. His vision is 20-20, but only becuase his dominant right eye takes over for his 20-60 left eye. I understand the medical eligibility requirements are rigid as respects vision, but that eyesight waivers are available for otherwise qualifying candidates who receive a Letter of Appointment....

Jimmy Carter 2. Bill Clinton 3. Al Gore 4. Walter Cronkite 5. Other (write in)

I need to get a new digital camcorder for use in filming underwater subjects. I have been told that the Sony TRV 950 is an excellent choice. I have been told that it is more user friendly than the VX 2000 or the Canon equivalent.
