  • Why do bad things happen to good people

In this life God does not promise freedom from suffering, pain and loss. In fact He promises us that we all will experience the above. What He does promise is the presence of the Holy Spirit to comfort us and the hope of heaven to come. God gave His only son and put him in a situation where death and suffering were the main part of the mission. Death was guaranteed and the goal. John 3:16.

For those who embrace this fact - the best is yet to come - so good it is not comparable to the suffering we experience now! By the way - it lasts for eternity! Suffering now - unspeakable joy soon. Death now - eternal life quicker than you think.

Why me? No answer - except the privilege to point to the one who makes it all right in the end and for eternity. "And they lived happily ever after" - is just a fairy tale ending unless you believe in Jesus. We're not quite at the end - it is around the corner.

I was at home finishing coffee, planning the rest of my day, soon to be on the way for a 9:30 a.m. meeting, with FOX News on. I heard about a "small plane accident" in New York, hitting one of the twin towers.

My husband worked for Dean Witter/MorganStanley, who office in one of the Towers (don't remember which one right now) and some of the people from the Kansas City office were there doing some training.

While on the phone telling him about the "accident," I watched with horror as a second plane dove into the second Tower! I gasped telling my husband that this was no accident but something far, far worse.

Husband wasn't there but had friends there and thankfully they did make it out, thanks to Rick Rescorla (Cyril Richard Rescora.

For those of you who've seen the Mel Gibson movie, "We Were Soldiers...And Young," his story is featured in the book by the same name by Lt. Col. Hal Moore, who described Rick as the "best platoon leader he ever saw!" His photo is featured on the jacket of the book!

Rick was hired in 1985 to head up security and after 1993 bombing of the Trade Center, planned escape plans for saving the lives of Dean Witter employees.

Thanks to Rick, all of the folks from the Kansas City offices made it out and most everyone did make it out alive, unfortunately he did not!

As that day went on, I never left home but spent being glued to TV, getting updates as much as possible, as to the condition of everyone in New York. They did finally make it back home to KC but it took a long time as they wound up getting transportation to areas outside NY to rent cars for the trip home.

Later during the night, after learning some of the nature of the attacks, the state of our country, I lay wide awake and listened for the occasional sound of an airplane as the military made passes over America all night to keep us safe from the harm that had befallen our country.

May God bless all of those families left behind, all of the first responders, all of the young people who signed up to serve to "protect and defend," everyone in our military and government who swore to defend us and to "bring justice to the perpetrators and may the same God condemn those in and out of government who went almost immediately to make political hay out of the way President Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfield went to go out after those that they knew harbored the Islamic terrorists. I remember President Bush telling everyone that this war would go on for decades and not to expect the enemy to stop just because we became "war weary." Hitler never gave up, neither did Hirohito. They had to be completely vanquished and we have had military stationed there even still. Japan was as different from the West as one could imagine, believing their Emperor was a god so we had to completely remake their society.

Did everything go as planned for the U.S., no but I also know my history and remember reading of how many people America lost in the planning of the Battle of the Bulge.

War is Hell and the enemy sets the rules, not the innocent, unsuspecting citizenry. When one does go to war, the only thing one should plan on is to win, not "sign a cease fire!"

The war has commenced but it's more of the law abiding and the lawless.

On the order of the Wild West before law and order finally tamed the marauders and it took some stiff justice, public hangings and dare I say, "wanted dead or alive" bounty hunters bringing in the bad guys as the police just don't seem to have time with doing their bicycle rides in the 'hood to make nice with the bad guys so that they don't call Rev. Al, or hanging out at the local middle schools pretending to run Dare programs!

What is needed is to toss the lawless out of DC, especially the (in)Justice Dept.

What is keeping law enforcement from clamping down on the lawless is race (Eric Holder is black, therefore "his people" must be the victims here).

    Had me in stitches!

In today's world with most everything in the toilet, it's good to know that we've been allowed to laugh no matter the circumstance.

That has been one thing that has made Americans stand out so much in the world, that we can laugh at ourselves and others from time to time, that life in the US hasn't been so dire that our collective sense of humor is still in tact.

I've had a similar experience some time ago.

This woman contacted first by showing up at my door and telling me she was with the Census Bureau.

I told her she was a bit late that the Census was taken in 2010 and I/we answered the questions that we chose to answer and if she was here to get us to fill in the blanks that were left, it wasn't going to happen.

Personal note: I've spent many years doing my own and others' genealogy, so I do value many questions on the Census and eternally grateful that my ancestors saw the wisdom in sharing their family history or I wouldn't know anything about them and myself. That having been said, much of what the Census under Obama has clearly been run not with future genealogists or family historians in mind but rather sinister intentions that are beyond the pale.

Now, back to my experience with the Census taker, she said that "a few people had been selected to ask further questions relating to how they arrived at their income" (some of ours is obtained by stocks and bond dividends and would be reflected in our IRS annual tax filing, this was before the recent unlawful dealings with the IRS but I was already aware if IRS being misused and colluding with certain liberal members of congress to get even with opponents), I was polite but firm with her that there would be nothing further forthcoming and she was wasting her time.

She never became threatening nor intimidating as described here but neither did she give up. She not only came back a few more times to, "see if I had changed my mind," then later called numerous times with the same questions.

I have to give her credit, whatever she was being paid, it couldn't have been enough to make that many call backs.

"Faith without works is dead;" "...many will say to me Lord, Lord but I will say to them, I never knew you."

Olsteen will and does say "things people like" and that is the problem, he preaches prosperity gospel but not scripture and people love having their "ears tickled."

Paul tells us in II Timothy 4:3 & 4, "For the time is coming when people will not endure sound doctrine, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions (4) and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths." ESV

Olseen and his misses are not alone in preaching to those who will not listen to "sound doctrine" as Paul predicts but will search out those preachers who tell them such things as "God loves you and wants you to be happy and that is good."

God does love you for you are His creation. He knew you before you were born, knows exactly is good for you and knows exactly what it takes for you to live a life that will bring Him joy: loving and worshipping Him, giving thanks for all that He has given you (beginning with your life and Savior Redeemer, Jesus Christ) and following His Son Jesus Christ and living a life of service to others with Christ as your Role Model.

God's desire "to prosper you" is not as the world defines as "prosperity" but as God defines it and that is as far as the North Pole is from the South Pole.

One of God's definitions of "prosperity" is sharing your faith in Him with someone who is lost.

The Olsteens are exactly whom Paul describes in II Timothy, folks who have perfected the talent of telling people exactly what they want to hear, not what is necessary to gain Eternal Life.

They like many others have casts of thousands who never tire of hearing exactly what they want rather than what God requires of them, i.e. believing that God is a great Santa Clause who really is happy giving us everything we want and when we're happy, He's happy.

You are totally correct on describing these "republicans supporting Greg Orman."

They are those whom we conservatives went after with our "Clean Sweep" program to rid KS of the folk that stood behind not only Kathleen Sebelius, Democrat Dennis Moore but also George Tiller and those liberals supporting keeping KS the "third trimester abortion capitol of the nation (some might say world!")

To date, Greg Orman has supported liberal democRATS, so what is so "libertarian" about that?

I suppose he supports keeping an open border to supply he and his family and all of KS, with all of the cheap warehouse labor they need as well as gay marriage and making pot legal in KS.

Those so anxious to send elected officials packing because they've been in DC too long (and I do agree with that) need to look at whom they are willing to stand behind before jumping on board (some might actually say in bed) with any candidate not the one they are attempting to remove!

The residency issue is important and should be considered no matter which party has the problem. In fact, it goes through both parties and has not been an election issue until at least this past primary.

One thing I will report is that when written, no member of our elected congress or other, stayed in DC through out the 12 month period for the reason that DC area was a hot, steamy, mosquito-ridden swamp!

I remember Pat Buchannan stating when he was growing up in Virginia and his father was either an elected member of congress or worked with government and at that time (presumably in the 1940s) only worked during the cooler months of the year.

After checking government records of congressional reports, I find that from 1927 to 1929 the congressional calendar year consisted of days from December through May (135 days) with a week off for Christmas.

After the 1929 Crash. It more importantly after FDR was elected, during the Depression, those calendar years consisted of 67 - 71 days or December through March.

Even during WWII, the actual calendar had congress in session between 141 through 204 days or January through May, then back from September through November (around the time of the Normandy invasion) and back the first week in January through April.

As was true during WWII, during Korea, there was an uptick in the congressional calendar but until the late '50s and '60s did the calendar expand with Spring (Easter) and Summer breaks, the actual working days have never expanded beyond those lengthy working sessions in the war years, they became spread out during the year, it became necessary for most members of congress to have some kind of permanent lodging in DC, one of the most expensive communities in the U.S.

We can certainly demand congress return to a January through May calendar year so it is not necessary to have any kind of permanent dwelling but unless a member of congress is independently wealthy, a spouse has a very well paid job or we triple congressional salaries, there is no logical way for members to have even a minimal dwelling at home as well as very minimal dwelling in DC!

There needs to be an open and honest way to discuss this dilemma but pretense by congressmen and women to actually live in both places (unless one is a Kerry, a Kennedy, a Pelosi or a Di Fi) is always going to leave the member open to charges to being a phony, a liar, or other by a Primary challenger or even member of the opposition and the low information voter will actually believe that the person challenging the existing member would be able to do anything any different!

As for me, I'd much rather pay the congress critter a much higher salary but absolutely insist on term limits of 12 years and absolutely NO pension - period, but that's not gonna happen in my lifetime!!!

The issue of black or the occasional Hispanic man "converting" to Islam, probably has had its origins with the NEA "public school inner city education standards" telling black children that they are hopeless due to "whitey," the man," and "institutional racism" woven in the fabric of America and dating back to slavery.

I suppose it's also my fault that those same black preachers protesting "institutional racism" and social justice never read the whole bible where the Lord speaks of teaching a man to fish rather than merely giving him a fish!

The only thing causing most of what they are now demanding justice over is their failure to marry the fathers of their children, to parent their own children, to finish school, get a job, to lay off the booze and drugs.....oh and to vote out the white and black liberals who want to keep them tied to Uncle Sugar Daddy for their entire lives!

"DHS does not consider non-violent civil disobedience criminal" acts, huh.

Does looting, screaming verbal threats, pushing and shoving passers by constitute "non-violence" by the DHS?

It looks like the Feds are going to be protecting the "civil rights" of the people celebrating their "Day of Rage."

The black children's fear instead of the police, should certainly be the black young and not so young men of their own community!

You know what I'm talking about even if the writer of this swill doesn't.

This sounds just like the same bilge that appears regularly in our local rag, the Kansas City (Red) Star!

Black pastors are out regularly on various street corners with black women and girls of the area, quoting scripture and bemoaning community neglect over the death of another black child or young person.

Unfortunately, on Sunday, those same pastors never, ever venture into the part of the bible that mentions chastity and the sin of fornication, of bringing children into the world without being married to the father of that child, about the tragedy of raising fatherless children, especially the boys.

Those same black pastors preach love, forgiveness, and the sin of racism inferring that some how the white community surrounding the urban core, is responsible for drive-by shootings over drug deals and gang bangers who feel "disrespected" by another person.

The editorial writers picking up on the same theme, continue the same narration of community neglect, poverty and racism is what is killing blacks in the neighborhood.

I'm sorry but I'm fresh out of sympathy here. Guys and gals who volunteer for jobs of attempting to protect the weak and innocent in the violent urban core not only care for those they are attempting to serve but place their very lives at risk each and every time they pin on the badge. Make mistakes, yes, errors in judgement under "fire" so to speak but many of those in the communities who do not appreciate their efforts, threaten them with violence and mayhem each and every day.

Anyone in the community not welcoming the police presence, is free to call drug dealers, people hopped up on PCP, or gang bangers when their child is missing, someone shoots up their homes or physically assaults the,.

Yeah, what is it about RAIN?

Bad guys getting rained on must be terrible!

No "long hot summer" so that the apologizers, especially in the media, can find plenty to excuse, i.e. heat, no fans, no air conditioners, no jobs, etc. Anything to excuse lawlessness and criminal behavior - but rain, now that's God's way of diffusing the situation.

    Thank you Jesus.

Well, they don't; necessarily need to be held in the “reddest states” but at the very least, not in places like Iowa, where students and paid stooges drive over from Illinois to “participate in their caucus” and we always wind up with people the liberals would most like to run against (aka losers that don't ever energize the conservative base, again like Dole, McCain or Romney), the same people that promise to never give a hard time to a Democrat candidate!

I'm sorry but you are incorrect (on public financing forcing primaries open.)

It is always up to the states to determine their own election rules and regulations.

Some time ago, liberals began claiming that what "we" needed was to "open primaries" that way, one could merely vote in whichever party's primary you wanted without having to do something "so partisan and exclusionary as having a closed primary election."

They even went so far as to hold "non-partisan" local elections even for Mayor, etc.

The only people that this ever helps are liberals, whether Democrat or Republicans!

Those 27 states with open primaries can vote at anytime to close their primaries but my thinking is that as many of those states are ruled by liberals, it won't happen.

I'm all for deciding whom to choose as a Presidential candidate by holding the first primaries only in closed primary states, that way we don't wind up with John McCain, Mitt Romney or Bob Dole!

The states control their own primaries.

How else do you think we got Presidential candidate, John McCain, even Mitt Romney - Iowa, New Hampshire, etc.

The only states with open primaries have elected officials who are "moderate" Republicans in charge.

Democrats never worry about having Republicans crossing over and voting in their primaries as most of us wouldn't be caught dead asking for a Democrat ballot!
