I just received my coupon from Cabela's today in the mail and must say I am both surprised and disappointed. Not only was the amount lowered from $100 to $75 off a $500 purchase, but now it does not apply to firearms. Awhile back, I was talking to several guys at a gun show who remembered when it was $150. The magic of Cabela's is definitely disappearing. Sad.

Shares of Cabela's (NYSE: CAB) soared more than 30% last week on record fourth-quarter 2008 results, which were driven by strong firearms sales. According to management, 2009 performance is set to pack less pow, but given a strengthened balance sheet and modest expansion plans, I say Cabela's deserves a closer look. Before tapping the wisdom of the Motley Fool CAPS investment community, let's take a look at some key stats for the company.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A record 124-pound blue catfish caught earlier this week by an Illinois man fishing in the Mississippi River died on its way to the Cabela's Outfitter store where it was to go on display. Tim Pruitt, 33, of Godfrey, Ill., caught the world-record blue catfish early Sunday near Alton. The fish, measuring 58 inches long and 44 inches around, was kept alive and was to be displayed in a tank at Cabela's in Kansas City, Kan., but it died en route to the store. ``We're baffled by this,'' Fred Cronin, a fisheries biologist for the Illinois...

ALTON, Ill. - It sounds like the sort of tale Mark Twain might have cooked up: A man fishing in the Mississippi River hauls in a blue catfish roughly the size of a sixth-grader. But this is no fish story. Early Sunday, Tim Pruitt caught a 124-pound blue catfish. To get a sense of just how big that is, the state record holder was a mere 85 pounds and the world record holder tipped the scales at 121 pounds, 8 ounces. Now, Pruitt, whose fish has already been weighed in the presence of a conservation police officer and measured by...

West Virginia businesses hoping for spillover effect from new Cabela's By VICKI SMITH The Associated Press 7/28/2004, 1:01 p.m. ET WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) — Landing a Cabela's is like striking economic-development gold, but people familiar with stores in other states say West Virginia merchants will have to work for any spillover business from the retail fantasy land for hunters and anglers. "One huge problem is people think that because there are going to be 6 million people coming to the community, they can flip the `Open' sign and sit back and wait for the cash registers to start ringing," says...
