A California judge refused this week to order a baker to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, ruling that to do otherwise would be to trample on the baker’s free speech rights. Superior Court Judge David R. Lampe said in his Monday ruling that wedding cakes run to the core of the First Amendment. “It is an artistic expression by the person making it that is to be used traditionally as a centerpiece in the celebration of a marriage. There could not be a greater form of expressive conduct,” the judge wrote.

These super cute animals are good enough to eat thanks to a talented mother-of-two who creates incredibly lifelike cake replicas of people's pets. Hannah Edwards, from London, uses photographs of her clients beloved pets to make the remarkable sponge sculptures which are entirely edible. The 35-year-old started baking as a way of making money after being made redundant while looking after her two young children and soon discovered her talent for realistic replicas. Hannah, who runs her own business called The Cake Illusionist, now also travels the world teaching cake sculpting.
  • Despite Sweet Cakes By Melissa Ruling, Gay Wedding Cakes Still Not A Constitutional Right

One wonders if the Sweet Cakes by Melissa case did not involve the owners refusing to be coerced to violate their religious conscience by providing a wedding cake for a gay wedding that celebrates gay marriage, but rather a Muslim bakery being forced to bake a cake decorated with a cartoon picture of the prophet Muhammed covered with bacon sprinkles. Would the bakery in that scenario been forced to pay a heavy business-killing fine for actually believing that the Founding Fathers meant freedom of religion when they enshrined it in the First Amendment? Probably not, even if the ruling was...

Recently – for some reason that I can’t even remember now – I was looking for information on Germany’s Black Forest. Many of the links that came up were for the famous Black Forest Cake – an extravagant confection of chocolate sponge cake, ‘kirschwasser’ and cherries. Definitely a 'celebration' cake, and it looks very nice for Christmas. Here, from Genius Kitchen, is a ‘from scratch’ recipe: here is one using prepared cake mix (includes a little history on the cake) from What's Cooking America: may have been looking up the Black Forest because I’ve become entranced by train...
  • In Supreme Court gay cake case, Kennedy says state has not been tolerant of baker's religious views

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy said during oral arguments on Tuesday that Colorado did not appear to show religious tolerance when it used its public accommodations law to force baker Jack Phillips to create speech via a custom cake for a same-sex wedding that defies his religious beliefs. The line of questioning garnered attention because Kennedy often serves as the divided high court's key swing vote, and a split vote could form again in Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. Kennedy pointedly criticized Colorado for not being "tolerant" of Phillips' religious beliefs. 00:21 / 01:00 Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch...

“T.J.” and Matt are gay, but they support the Colorado bakery owner fighting a legal battle for his right, on religious grounds, to refuse to make wedding cakes for same-sex couples. Standing outside the Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado, the bakery at the center of the court case that goes before the Supreme Court on Dec. 5, they explained why they support its owner, Jack Phillips. “We’re here to buy stuff from him,” Matt said, in a video he and T.J. made for Alliance Defending Freedom, “and support him, because we don’t think any artist should be forced to create...

Caneles (or Canneles) de Bordeaux are a traditional French pastry, soft and custardy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and flavored with rum. Traditionally, these are made with a special mold; and you can still do them this way, or make them in simpler, modern variations. Some sources indicate that the best molds to use for this are copper ones; but you can buy them now in other materials. Amazon has the traditional copper: as well as carbon-steel and silicone molds. You can also use small, oven-safe custard cups. For authentic canneles, the inside of the mold is coated...

A boy whose letter to President Trump made national headlines last month reportedly wanted a pro-Trump cake for his birthday party, but his mother was unable to find a baker willing to fulfill the order. At the July 26 White House press briefing, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders read a letter from a boy named Dylan who said Mr. Trump was his favorite president. When she later released the letter publicly, the boy’s last name was blacked out. The only identifying clue was that everyone called him “Pickle.” The media scrambled to verify the letter’s authenticity, and the next day,...

  • Slovenia calls for recognition of nut cake after Pope's quip to Melania Trump at Vatican

Until a few days ago, it was a tasty but obscure cake from Slovenia. But a quip by Pope Francis about Donald Trump's girth catapulted the Slovenian dessert putizza, also known as potica, to international attention. Now Slovenia has decided to capitalise on the dessert’s new-found fame by seeking official European Union recognition for the toothsome treat so that authentic recipes are not messed around with. It's being dubbed “the Melania effect” - it was to the First Lady that the Pope made the joke last Wednesday, when the Trumps visited the Vatican for the first time as part of...

Schools have been told they should give transgender pupils a cake to celebrate their “transition”, as experts warn that teachers must be trained to deal with an “explosion” of students who no longer identity with their sex. Delegates at the Association of Teachers and Lecturers conference this week were told that changing attitudes have resulted in a "huge" surge in the number of transgender and non-binary people coming forward. “Five years ago, hardly anyone in school or in university would come across a young trans person, but it’s changed substantially,” said Terry Reed, a campaigner for transsexual rights who co-founded...

A bakery in Louisiana refused to bake a birthday cake featuring the words “Trump 2016,” prompting questions as to whether the business will be fined in a similar vein to how Sweet Cakes by Melissa, a cake shop in Oregon, was forced to shut down after its owners refused to bake a cake for a gay wedding.
  • How much they spent on the big cake "birthday" of Hugo Chavez

In the midst of economic crisis, the government a lot of money is spent on a cake for the "birthday" of Hugo Chavez, in a "celebration" that was held Thursday at the CDLM (Cuartel Mountain, January 23, Caracas) and also it included singers to llanera music. At least 1.20 meters and 90 kilos more ingredients were required for the "architectural replica" of the headquarters of the mountain that ended in the "whiskers" of Nicholas. Below is a list of the budget for the cake of "absent": Kilo of wheat flour: Approximately 2,000 Bolivars (Second-hand in Catia or Petare, by shortages)....

OSCEOLA, Ind. — Ted Cruz is arguing he still has a path to Republican presidential nomination, even if he loses the primary here Tuesday as expected. “Absolutely, but we intend to do everything possible to win tomorrow,” the U.S. senator from Texas told reporters Monday after a stop in this town in northern Indiana. “I am in for the distance,” Cruz later said. “As long as we have a viable path to victory, I am competing to the end.”

A San Francisco bay area resident is accusing the bakery staff at the local Whole Foods of adding an "extremely offensive" three-letter slur that starts with a "G" to a cake custom cake ordered at the store. The cake in question was commissioned to say "Love Wins" at the top, but upon receipt of the cake Gianny Limpschtick claims that someone at the Whole Foods wrote "GOP" below. Just a note: We often think of the men who conducted the Salem witch trials. They were the judges and jurors. But they weren't the accusers. The accusers were a nine year old girl, an eleven year old girl, and a twelve year old girl. It's important to remember that. Young people, especially young girls in a male-dominated society, may feel powerless. And may feel more acutely any ambient paranoia in a community. Immature people of all genders and ages might be prone to this. Lodging a hysterical accusation suddenly makes the powerless powerful, and the marginally noticed suddenly the...
