Civil rights activist Peter Miguel Camejo, an advocate of third party politics, died early today at his home in Walnut Creek, according to Ralph Nader, who notified The Bee in an e-mailed tribute. ...Camejo was a third party candidate for state and national office. He was Nader's running mate in the 2004 presidential election, and attempted three gubernatorial runs in California for the Green Party. In 2002 he garnered 5.3 percent of the vote. In the 2003 recall election, he debated Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gray Davis.

Peter Camejo, an independent vice presidential candidate in 2004, announced Wednesday he intends to enter the race for governor of California. Camejo plans to submit papers Thursday in Sacramento to run as a Green Party candidate, a spokesman, Cres Vellucci, said. Camejo was the party's nominee for governor in 2002 and 2003. "He believes there needs to be a viable alternative" to major-party candidates, Vellucci said. If he qualifies for the ballot, Camejo would be a long shot. He received about 3 percent of the vote in the 2003 recall election that installed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in office. As a...

There are speeches yet to go at the Republican Convention, as I write this. President Bush will speak tonight, and of course the most important speech given at any party convention is the one by its nominee. Still, without fear of being proven wrong, in my opinion the most powerful and evocative speech at this Convention was given yesterday. By a Democrat, Senator Zell Miller. The title which summarizes his work is just one letter different from the catch phrase made famous in the Oscar-winning performance of Peter Finch in the 1976 classic, Network. There are two media camps in America today: one that is digging into Col. Jerry Killian's memos and examining what typewriter fonts were in use in 1972 and parsing Ben Barnes's statements about National Guard admissions, and one that is not. George Bush received an honorable discharge from the Guard--that much is not in dispute. Everything else--including whether the documents "60 Minutes" obtained are authentic--seems to be in play.

Reuters reports that Kerry called the War in Iraq "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time" today, and insisted that Bush's middle initial, W, stands for "wrong." However, the Congressional Record shows that on March 20 2003, Kerry voted for S.95 which is titled "Commending the President and the Armed Forces of the United States of America" which "commends and supports the efforts and leadership of the President, as Commander in Chief, in the conflict against Iraq." After the documents were released by CBS, the Bush administration distributed them to reporters without comment. Why would they do such a thing? Why would they further disseminate documents to the Washington press corps that are critical of President Bush, especially when the documents are readily available on the internet? The answer is simple: The White House's internal analysis revealed that the documents were forgeries. They wanted the word to get out, but a claim of forgery would make them look like crybabies and conspiracy theorists. Instead, they simply distributed the memos without comment, knowing that someone would realize they...

I think the person responsible for this incredibly botched forgery must possess several qualities: (1) remarkable deviousness, (2) breathtaking amorality, (3) an intellectual facility for generating possibilities rather than probabilities, and (4) a lack of solid experience with typewriters and word processors by which to verify the possibilities generated by his imagination. Here's part of how this story got here . . . from a little Marc Ambinder back-lurking on the blogs . . . At 8:00 pm ET Wednesday night, CBS News does the story . . . at 8:59 ET — before the broadcast is finished!!! — the documents come into question via a poster named Buckhead on the Free Republic Web site: LINK Buckhead seems well-read on his forensic document examination skills. "Howlin, every single one of these memos to file is in a proportionally spaced font, probably Palatino or Times New Roman. In 1972 people used typewriters for...

THE CBS PAPERS [Jed Babbin] I spoke to Col. Bill Campenni (USAF ret) earlier this morning. As I've written before, Campenni was a member of the President's squadron and flew with him often. Campenni told me that there are a whole slew of reasons -- beyond those being debated now -- to question the authenticity of the CBS papers: 1. The 4 May 1972 order and the 1 August 1972 memo both have a letterhead for the wrong organization. Correspondence and orders in those days would be issued in the name of the parent organization -- the 147th Fighter Interceptor...

Bush Guard Memos Under MicroscopeNEW YORK, Sept. 10, 2004 Questions were raised Thursday about the authenticity of newly unearthed memos purporting to have been written by one of President Bush's National Guard commanders in 1972 and 1973. The memos, which were publicized on CBS News' 60 Minutes, say Mr. Bush ignored a direct order from a superior officer and lost his status as a Guard pilot because he failed to meet military performance standards and undergo a required physical exam. The network defended the memos, saying its experts who examined the memos concluded they were authentic documents produced by...

"Politics in a Time of War" in the latest USNews shows liberal Sen. John Kerry on a war footing with President Bush, as a possible prelude to a presidential run by eternal hopeful Kerry in 2004. Kerry is a Vietnam War hero, as he reminds us every chance he gets. According to US News: “Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts sat at his Senate office desk next to the bullet-punctured American flag that used to fly from the gunboat he commanded in Vietnam and implied that anybody who tried to question his patriotism was going to run into a buzz...

Kerry to Bush: 'We're coming, you're going' 12:12 AM CST on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 From Wire Reports DES MOINES, Iowa – John Kerry's voice was so hoarse when he woke at 4:45 a.m. Monday that he sent stand-ins to three get-out-the-vote rallies. But by late afternoon he hopped back on his campaign bus, the Real Deal Express, saying he wanted to see undecided Iowa caucusgoers one last time to "fight for every vote." Those four words became the Massachusetts senator's political vow in the final weeks before the nation's first presidential caucuses – which Mr. Kerry won easily over...
