Leaders for Liberty: Sharron Angle, Terri McCormick, and Sarah Steelman

As the focus turns from rebuilding the Republican Party in 2009 to winning elections in 2010, look to three savvy women to lead the way for liberty next year. Sharron Angle is a former member of the Nevada Assembly who was narrowly defeated in a Congressional primary two years ago. At her website, she sharply criticizes the national debt, the continued growth of government, and mounting Congressional spending. In 2010, Angle is likely to run against the vulnerable U.S. Senate Speaker Harry Reid (D-NV). Terri McCormick is a former State Representative from Wisconsin. Elected in 2000, she self-imposed a term...

President Mark Sanford Is Still Possible in 2012

“No one’s going to save us dude. It’s up to us and us alone.” These are the words of a text message I received from a fellow conservative upon the revelation that South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford had disappeared for a few days to spend time with his mistress in Argentina. After the cumulative disaster that were the 2008 GOP primaries, conservatives desperately thought that, for once, we might have an ardent conservative – particularly a fiscal conservative – run and actually capture the White House in 2012. And this was not your garden-variety, self-proclaimed “conservative” Republican who interpreted conservatism...

Speech on Federal Loan Guarantee for California [McClintock says Calif. loan guarantee a bad idea]

Tough Love for California.House Chamber, Washington, D.C.June 11, 2009 M. Speaker: Gov. Schwarzenegger of my home state of California has called for the federal government to underwrite as much as $15 billion of Revenue Anticipation Notes that the state has to issue to avoid insolvency. I think that would be a colossal mistake, and that such an act would not only dig the nation deeper into the hole it is in, but would actually make California’s fiscal condition worse. Today, California faces a paradox: despite record levels of spending and borrowing, it can no longer produce a decent road system,...

Republican group wants Sanford to run [in 2012] [RLC]

Caucus says governor protects taxpayers. BY ROBERT BEHRE At least one faction of the Republican Party thinks South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford should run for president. The National Board of the Republican Liberty Caucus passed a resolution encouraging Sanford to seek the office in 2012. It cited the way Sanford has voted his conscience on tough issues. Dave Nalle, chairman of the California-based caucus, said: "In his two terms as governor of South Carolina, Sanford has shown independence and creativity and acted as a vigilant guardian of taxpayer interests." The caucus is far from the highest profile organization within the...

KILL HB 300: Trans Texas Corridor to proceed despite repeal of corridor

Grassroots call for lawmakers to KILL loaded TxDOT sunset bill Trans Texas Corridor to proceed despite repeal of corridor (Austin, TX – May 28, 2009) The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) sunset bill, HB 300, now over 1,500 pages long, has too much baggage for taxpayers to swallow. HB 300 ends the private toll moratorium (which hands our PUBLIC highways to PRIVATE, foreign toll operators), keeps the Trans Texas Corridor (TTC) alive, opens a new loophole to toll existing freeways, allows counties a 10 cent gas tax hike, raids public employee pension funds to invest in risky private toll roads...

Pure Bigotry

Yesterday judge Nadia Sotomayor was nominated for the US Supreme Court by President Barack Obama in a profoundly bigoted way, for notably racist and sexist reasons. And she has ruled in a profoundly bigoted way, with massive racism and sexism in her judicial decisions. One can't help but ask: What about the concept of a neutral, impartial, objective rule of law -- one in which no-one is a second class citizen? What about the notion that "justice is blind?" What about the ideal of equality before the law?
Former Sen. Karen Johnson is considering a return to the political arena with a run for governor. Johnson, a Mesa Republican who left office in 2008 after 12 years in the Legislature, filed an exploratory committee for a gubernatorial run on April 15. She said she filed at the urging of friends and colleagues who worked with her on Ron Paul's presidential campaign, and is waiting to see what kind of support she gets before she decides whether she will officially file as a candidate. "I thought we'd kind of stick our toe in the water," Johnson said. "I think...

Budget Expands Government as Economy Contracts [Ron Paul]

Last week the House passed another budget that increases federal power, raises taxes, and increases the national debt. I voted against it, and was pleased to see that not a single Republican representative voted for it. Legislators often see bipartisanship as constructive, but I disagree especially where the destruction of our economy or our liberty is concerned. There has been too much bipartisan consensus on expanding government far beyond the bounds of the Constitution which we all swore to defend and uphold. Because of this, I have never been able to vote for a budget. However, it was good to...

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), whose bid for the GOP presidential nomination last year electrified libertarians and generated a passionate following online, told Bob Schieffer that he will "probably" not run for president in 2012 during a special "Washington Unplugged" interview. In a free-flowing conversation, Paul was pessimistic about both the direction of his party and the country. Asked about the future of the GOP, Paul said: "I think of it in terms of the country and the future of the Republican and Democratic party, and there's not much good in either party at the rate we're going, and right now...

On Reinstating the Draft [Ron Paul]

Much has been made by the new administration of the idea of national service and volunteerism. While service to one’s community is certainly admirable, it is not the federal government’s place to “encourage” or promote volunteerism. Moreover, there are troubling signs that national service could transition from voluntary to mandatory, or de facto mandatory, such as the requirement of service in order to be granted a diploma, or something along those lines. Involuntary servitude was supposed to be abolished by the 13th Amendment, but things like Selective Service and the income tax make me wonder how serious we really are...

Paul, a two-time presidential candidate, decided to become involved in politics after President Richard Nixon took the United States off the gold standard in 1971. More than 500 activists are expected to attend the first summit in St. Louis from March 25 to 27. The second summit is scheduled for April in Jacksonville and a third tentatively set for Seattle.
Mark Sanford: A Lone Voice of Reason

Republicans would often say that no matter how far their senators, congressmen and latter-day president strayed from real conservative values, it was the various state governors who were gloriously holding the line against taxes, spending and other big government initiatives that originated from the left but were cheerfully adopted by the right. That is, until this week. GOP governors from all over the country have begun lobbying for the passage of Obama’s $819 billion spending plan and, naturally, demanding their own cut. And these aren’t just wishy-washy moderates such as Arnold Schwarzenegger or Charlie Crist, but even those “conservatives” regaled...

A few weeks ago, I received an e-mail from the campaign of a young man named Bob Conley. He is running for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Lindsey Graham. I was very much impressed by his many conservative positions and his obvious dedication to our ailing Constitution, which has been under attack these last eight years. This fellow, I thought, must have the faith of a mustard seed to try to take on Lindsey Graham and his $3.5 million campaign war chest, contributed by Washington lobbyists and special interest groups. Palin's event in Dallas today. Sen. Obama's message, and Sen.
