House Republicans and tea party protesters spent the summer and much of the fall in an awkward mating dance, with neither group too sure it wanted to embrace the other. But they consummated the relationship over the weekend in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, and they’ll come together Thursday in Washington for a coordinated assault on the Democrats’ plans for health care reform.

In September, Joyce Short and her sister, Lois Rowe, both of Sapulpa, drove to Washington, D.C. to attend the historical March on Washington by Americans who feel this country is being taken in the wrong direction. Joyce said she was offered $500 by a local businessman to help pay...

Committee chairman Max Baucus, D-Montana, said that while he liked the idea of a public option, he knew a bill that included the provision would be a death sentence for health care reform. But Democratic Sens. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Charles Schumer of New York, who sponsored the public option amendments, both indicated that they don't think the debate about the public option is over. Despite his proposal being voted down, Schumer said Tuesday, "Today the odds went up that there'll be a public option in the bill." There's been a lot of focus on the plan in...

Visitors to Washington D.C. today got to hear what residents in Hamtramck and Dearborn, Michigan, as well as areas of London, Amsterdam and other Western cities already endure five times a day: The sound of amplified Muslim prayers lifted to Allah. This time, the prayers reverberated over America’s front lawn as some 2,000 Muslims gathered for the Jummah Prayer on Capitol Hill: A Day of Islamic Unity. Promoters had planned for 50,000 but came nowhere near that. Hadn’t you heard about this? If not, it’s probably because the media have been tight lipped, the better not to embarrass the One...

MADISON, Wis. – The nation's largest group of atheists and agnostics filed a lawsuit Tuesday seeking to block an architect from engraving "In God We Trust" and the Pledge of Allegiance at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington. The Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation's lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in western Wisconsin, claims the taxpayer-funded engravings would be an unconstitutional endorsement of religion. The House and Senate passed identical resolutions this month directing the Architect of the Capitol to engrave "In God We Trust" and the pledge in prominent places at the entrance for 3 million tourists who visit...

The U.S. Capitol's Visitor Center is the quintessential public-works project. It began as a modest proposal in 1994: Build an underground area where tourists could get out of the elements while they wait in line to tour the Capitol. From its $70 million beginnings, however, it mushroomed into a three-story, 580,000-square-foot monstrosity that is three-quarters the size of the Capitol itself. Ostentatious only begins to describe the center, which has been dubbed "Congress' tribute to itself." It includes a TV studio where members may record messages for the folks back home, two theaters, an auditorium and an exhibition hall, and...

Following years of delays and skyrocketing costs, Tuesday’s opening of the $621 million Capitol Visitor Center (CVC) was marked by more controversy and criticism. At a morning dedication ceremony, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) offhand comment about how the taxpayer-funded center meant he and other lawmakers would not have to smell sweaty tourists raised eyebrows. By the afternoon, a Republican senator had claimed the center was godless, while a budget watchdog raised familiar arguments about the project’s wasteful spending. That followed poor reviews of the center’s architecture in two newspapers. House and Senate leaders largely ignored the four years...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 26, 2007 – For New Orleans native Myeisha Goldston, it’s all about the attitude – and she used to have a “b-a-a-a-a-d” one, she confessed. ...There were 161 homicides in this city last year, and there have been 18 so far this year, making New Orleans by most measures the nation’s per capita murder capital, given its sharply reduced population. Many of the victims and the suspects are teenagers. About two-thirds of the deaths have gone unsolved: the killers, in many cases, continue to walk the streets and are likely to kill again, the police say. Other cities have plenty of murders. But only in New Orleans has there been the uniquely poisoned set of circumstances that has led to this city’s position at the...

Members of the Greater Baltimore Junior College Anarchists Club preempt counter protesters by throwing themselves in the trash. (AP photo) Singer/activist Jackson Browne, left, holds up a self portrait to protest the war while Santa Claus, right, asks an AP reporter for some smokes. The Reverend Jesse Jackson keeps a watchful eye out for activist Cindy Sheehan, explaining that he was "mauled" by her at the last anti-war rally and would rather not have it happen again. Putting on his angriest face, Georgetown senior Matt LeDeuce declares that if the outlaw Jesse James were alive today, he would be...

Statue of Reagan heads to Capitol as critics protest Resolution passed in final hours of legislative session By Robin Hindery ASSOCIATED PRESS January 2, 2007 SACRAMENTO – Under a joint resolution passed with little fanfare in the waning hours of California's 2006 legislative session, the statue of the man who helped preserve California's statehood during the Civil War will be uprooted from its home in the nation's Capitol. The bronze likeness of Thomas Starr King, which has represented California in The National Statuary Hall Collection since 1931, will be replaced with one of a figure more recognizable to later generations:...

WASHINGTON - President Bush and first lady Laura Bush briefly paid their respects Monday to Gerald R. Ford, joining thousands of ordinary Americans in saying goodbye to the former president. At midafternoon on a rainy, overcast day, the first couple stood at Ford's flag-draped casket and bowed their heads. Their stay at the U.S. Capitol lasted just a few minutes. Afterward, the Bush motorcade took the president to Blair House, across the street from the White House, where the Bushes visited former first lady Betty Ford for a half-hour and then walked back to the Executive Mansion. Vice President Dick...

WASHINGTON - An armed man crashed his vehicle into a security barricade at the U.S. Capitol on Monday, ran into the building and was arrested, forcing the complex to briefly be locked down, authorities said. The man was armed with a gun, said one security officer speaking anonymously pending an official briefing. The officer said the man was captured by police after running through the Rotunda in the center of the Capitol and down a stairway into the basement. He said the man appeared to be having a seizure, and was taken to a hospital. A congressional aide said the...
